U.S. Consul General in Hyderabad, Jennifer Larson, emphasised the importance of volunteer service to keep the city clean and beautiful, on the occasion of Community Day, at Rushikonda Beach, here on Saturday. The American Corner at Andhra University organised the event.
As part of the event, the Consul General participated in a beach clean-up drive along with students and volunteers. She appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the volunteers, students, and local citizens, expressing happiness over the collaborative efforts for such environmental initiatives.
Speaking at the event, Andhra University (AU) Vice-Chancellor G.P. Rajasekhar noted that programmes like these contribute significantly to maintaining cleanliness at beaches. He praised the volunteers for their energetic and dedicated participation.
Registrar E.N. Dhanumjaya Rao called for making the beach plastic-free. He urged the implementation of special measures to reduce plastic usage and commended the volunteers for their efforts to maintain the beach in an eco-friendly manner.
AU Director of Physical Education N. Vijay Mohan, NSS coordinator S. Haranath, NCC coordinator N.M. Yugandhar, Public Diplomacy Officer Emilia Smith from the U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad, American Spaces coordinator Melissa Nandula, and AU American Corner coordinator Paul Douglas and others participated in this event.

Allahabad University scholar Neha Rubab wins Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar for Urdu novel

Neha Rubab, a research scholar in the Urdu department at Allahabad University (AU) and a resident of the Kareli locality, has been selected for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2025, announced on Wednesday. This year, 23 young writers from across the country have been chosen for their outstanding contributions in various languages. Neha received the honour for her Urdu-language novel Mazharul Haq: Tareeq-e-Azadi-e-Hind Ka Faramosh Karda Qaid. The award includes a cash prize of ₹50,000, according to AU PRO Prof Jaya Kapoor. Neha had completed her doctoral research under the guidance of former head of Urdu department of AU Prof Shabnam Hamid and submitted her thesis a month ago. On January 26, she was honoured with the Best Research Scholar Award started this year at AU by vice chancellor Prof Sangita Srivastava. In 2022, Neha had also received the PM Yuva Lekhak Samman—an honour for which just 75 youths were selected from all over the country. This honour was given to Neha Rubab by President Draupadi Murmu during a programme at Rashtrapati Bhavan. She is currently working as a research assistant at the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, New Delhi. Expressing happiness on being selected for the Yuva Puraskar, Neha said, 'This is a great honour for me. I worked hard continuously and this award will inspire me to move further in life and do better work.' The Urdu novel that has earned Neha Rubab her latest award focuses on the untouched aspects of the life of Maulana Mazharul Haq, who was an associate of Mahatma Gandhi.

1 2 Visakhapatnam: Andhra University has trained 1,200 students as yoga trainers, including those from its department of yoga, for the International Yoga Day event in Visakhapatnam on June 21, which would be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The training was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, selected students underwent a training programme at their respective college campuses, led by students and researchers from the AU department of yoga. In the second phase, held over the past few days, these students received advanced training at the AU yoga village on the beach road in Visakhapatnam, under the supervision of expert instructors. Their role will be to assist participants in performing yoga asanas correctly during the IYD event, offering guidance, and ensuring the exercises are carried out in a safe and synchronised manner. According to officials, about 200 foreign students of the university will also participate in the event. In all, a total of 17,000 students from Andhra University are participating in the programme. Prof K Ramesh Babu, head of the department of yoga, said they have prepared 1,200 trainers as suggested by the state govt. "These trainers have been selected for the university campus and affiliated colleges. They will assist yoga participants at their designated locations on June 21," said Babu. AU department of yoga and consciousness student B Sireesha, who is serving as the master trainer, said she has visited affiliated colleges of the university and provided training to students. "Students have shown a keen interest in the yoga curriculum and training. Yoga could be made a regular part of the academic curriculum," she said. Dr Sravani Ch, a professor of practice at the department, said due to the Yogandhra programme, yoga has reached youth on a wide scale. "Similarly, involving young people in such a prestigious programme is a positive development. Through this, not only do the youth learn yoga, but it also serves as an encouragement to practise it regularly," Dr Sravani opined. Vice-chancellor Prof GP Rajasekhar said in the context of Yogandhra and IYD programmes, students from Andhra University affiliated colleges received a valuable opportunity. "Two hundred foreign students belonging to Andhra University are participating in the IYD. Up to 17,000 students from AU are taking part in the programme," he said.
