Doctor Who is wasted on Disney – ditch it or it risks dying
After almost three years, two seasons, five specials, and a spin-off series I've realised one thing – Doctor Who cannot survive under Disney.
When Russell T Davies and the BBC announced Doctor Who's global partnership with one of the world's biggest brands, I was initially filled with hope.
It marked a new era for the show with a bigger budget than ever, the global stature I believed it deserved, and the chance to pull in new audiences to see what this silly British sci-fi show was all about – and why it has captured so many people's hearts.
And yet, the result couldn't have been further from the truth.
Jointly with the BBC, Disney Plus only greenlit 26 episodes of the show in total which the creative team decided to divide into three 60th anniversary specials with David Tennant, two Ncuti Gatwa festive specials, two eight-episode seasons and a (yet-to-be released) UNIT spin-off – The War Between the Land and the Sea.

By simply doing the maths, I was already concerned about the inevitably shortened seasons we were going to have. And the fact that three would already be filled with David Tennant's return, taking away from the size of Ncuti Gatwa's run.
These worries soon turned into a reality.
So far, our time with Ncuti has been stretched extremely thin, let alone any one-season-only companions (as we have had so far with Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday and Varada Sethu's Bellinda Chandra).
Despite an impressive use of the budget to build immersive sets, goblin-themed musical numbers, and an array of vibrant costumes, I barely got to know Ruby Sunday. All before she was bidding adieu to the Tardis in what should have been a tear-jerking finale, but instead just left me baffled and wanting more.

There was less time for simple scenes playing off Ncuti and Millie's chemistry and more time devoted to big scale theatrics.
At least for me, the main appeal of the show is the relationship between the Doctor and their companion – with each carving their own mark into our hearts through their many adventures together.
And when Belinda was introduced, with the promise of a fiery personality that would clash with the Doctor, I had hope anew.
Unfortunately, the problem is clear and glaring. An eight-episode season, that also includes an epic two part finale, is simply not enough time to flesh out these characters and their dynamics.
The stakes are completely gutted when you've only known Belinda (properly) for five episodes before pitting her against the season's big bad.
The shortening of season lengths started in Jodie Whittaker's era, but there is a direct correlation between joining Disney+ and our biggest reduction of a regular season size yet down to snappy eight episodes – with just one annual special.
The very fact we seem beholden to Disney Plus' decision on whether the show is being renewed means a huge shake-up in production timelines as well.

Instead of being able to receive guaranteed specials and a steady timeline for when each season will come out, we're all being forced to wait with bated breath.
The show is unsustainable – and almost soulless – in this condensed, unpredictable format, especially when we still have Doctor-lite episodes like Lucky Day. Without that emotional core, it will be driven to a quiet end.
And frankly, no amount of Disney budget makes up for what has been lost plot-wise, unless the money is redistributed to guarantee longer seasons at the cost of high-budget effects. And if I were to see a way forward with Disney Plus, this is what I would want to see done.
Not a huge loss since the show still occasionally suffers from the same endearing CGI blunders as before (lest we forget Rogue's greenscreen cameo in Wish World). This can surely be done in the hands of just the BBC.
Of course, it's delightful to see the show explore previously uncharted territory like the impressive special effects in Lux, likely only made possible with that sweet Mickey Mouse cash.
But I would exchange 100 Luxes to have some goofy low-budget filler episodes to build the relationship between our Doctor and their companion. It could have resulted in a season that had the space to turn Belinda's scepticism into wonder without it feeling rushed or unnatural.
It's why, when reports came from the Mirror that the show would continue with the BBC even if Disney didn't renew their deal, I couldn't help but do a mini-celebration.
Far from despair, I think returning fully into the hands of the BBC with a steady budget alongside 12 or 13-episode seasons (plus specials) would be ideal.
After all, this is not just on the shoulders of Disney. If it was to go back under BBC's sole creative jurisdiction, I would hope they could learn lessons from what went wrong with their time at Disney and course-correct.
Especially since there was an era of the show when we were receiving full-length Doctor Who with multi-season companions in tandem with Torchwood (from 2006 to 2011) and Sarah Jane Adventures (2007 to 2011) to target multiple demographics at once. More Trending
The expansive depth of the Doctor Who universe (clearly acknowledged in the Disney+ era as well, if the number of returning Classic Who villains is anything to go by) is what makes the show so rich for fans – and why we have trusted the BBC to have its best interests at heart for so long.
Naturally, it would be brilliant to see Doctor Who continue to spread its global impact with an easy platform for audiences to access the show – but if it comes at the cost of what makes the series special, then is it really worth it?
I hope that if the Disney+ deal is renewed then it goes forward with radical changes to the current format.

Otherwise, I'm ready to see the show go back to its BBC roots and given the time and space it deserves to flourish on screen – as it did once before.

The reality star shared her shock at Toni's outburst against Emily. Siding with the British star, Jess accused American bombshell Toni of being "b**chy". In a message shared via Instagram stories, the star wrote: "Ok what the hell, just because someone isn't your cup of tea doesn't mean you can cause a big drama over it?!" Jess continued: "Toni girl I loved you but I don't like b****y behaviour & pulling crying behaviour." And she added: "Why can't the girls be 1 big group cos these men be acting CRAZY." On Friday night, fans saw tension escalate between Toni and Emily as the 2025 season endured one of its most dramatic arguments so far. Friction came to a head after the two ladies took a near instant dislike to each other after Emily entered the villa as a bombshell on day five. Toni's feather's were ruffled when she overheard a conversation between Emily and Irish contestant Conor Phillips, 25. The American bombshell then found a confidant in Shakira Khan, 22, who she shared her frustrations with. But Emily later accused Toni of talking behind her back, while fellow Islander Megan 'Meg' Moore, 25, warned Emily that Toni had branded her "nosey" and "Little Miss Sunshine." An almighty row erupted, with Emily despairing that Toni was "just trying to cause a problem," and "she's f****g nuts." All the drama could be helping generate interest in the long-running show, however. While the 2025 season got off to a low viewership start when it launched on 9 June, the audience then reportedly grew by 1.7 million streams on ITVX after the first episode aired. Some past contestants have started campaigning for the series to be axed, however, and the show has a long history of being tied to the tragic mental health declines of past contestants. This weekend, Malin Andersson, who starred on the show in 2016, voiced her concerns about the way the series is made. She told The Mirror: "It should be axed. When I was on it, we were naive, it felt more organic – still scripted but more authentic. Even then, it wasn't pure, it was full of toxicity. Now millions watch it, especially young people, and their idea of love gets completely skewed." She added: "I felt disposable, like a piece of rubbish tossed aside. In there, you're fighting to be seen, to be a main character, seeking validation. It's not healthy – it creates unrealistic drama and messes up how viewers see love." Love Island has come under fire in the past for failing to support contestant that take part in the series - however, strict after care rules were introduced in 2019 after the deaths of former contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis.

'My mum abandoned us to live in Kenyan hut with toyboy Masai warrior'
Just weeks after meeting on a package holiday in Kenya, British mum Cheryl Thomasgood tied the knot with Masai warrior Daniel Lekimencho. At 34, Cheryl had left behind her quiet life on the Isle of Wight with her two children and second husband for her new lover—but she later lived to regret it. And her son, Stevie Liddington, says the abrupt decision tore his life apart and ruined his childhood. The couple met in the early 1990s whilst staying at the Bamburi Beach Hotel in Mombasa and hairdresser Cheryl soon traded in her suburban, comfortable home life to relocate with the Kenyan warrior, 10 years her junior. Earlier this month, Cheryl spoke out about the romance, saying she eventually felt used as a "meal ticket". But expressing her anguish hasn't made up for the torment felt by Stevie, who was just 11 when she left the family home. Speaking to MailOnline, he says he is "ashamed" and "deeply disgusted" by his mother's actions. "She was never the kind of mother who cared about her children's emotional well-being, and even now, decades later, she continues to show who she truly is by dragging this all up again without a thought for the people it hurts," he said. Stevie, who relocated to Seoul, South Korea, with his wife and children, says he hasn't spoken to his mum in 10 years. Meanwhile, his brother, who lives in Canada, also has little contact with their mum, according to the brother. Even before she abandoned them, Stevie's childhood had already been traumatic. His father, Robert Liddington, left when he was four-years-old, resulting in Cheryl experiencing a mental breakdown, MailOnline reports. The brothers were placed into foster care before Cheryl's second husband, Mike Mason, provided stability for the family and looked after them as if they were his own. But his life then shattered into pieces when he received a phone call from his mum saying she was never returning home. Matters were made worse, he says, after she spoke with the press. Children at his school would bring in newspapers and make fun of him after she shared tales of her unconventional romance. She swapped her home comforts to live in a mud hut in rural Kenya, where she lived off cabbage and cow's blood. The couple eventually left Kenya behind in 1995 so she could return to the Isle of Wight, and three years later, they had a daughter, Mitsi. They tied the knot on Valentine's Day, both wearing traditional Masai clothing. But when she reportedly would go missing for days, it was Stevie who was left to look after his half-sister. He remembers praying that she was still alive as he walked around the local neighbourhood for hours trying to search for her. Stevie claims that his mum's relationship with Daniel was "violent" and that he cannot forgive Cheryl for what she did, having firmly closed the door shut at any opportunity for a reconciliation, adding that she should "never have been a mother". Four years after marrying, Cheryl and Daniel split in 1999, with the mum citing that the spiritual warrior "turned into a miserable sod". She claimed her third husband changed whilst living in the UK, and became "obsessed" with wealth. And now three decades later, the mum-of-three, now 65, has opened up about her regretful past. "I made a huge mistake, it was very wrong of me, and I have a lot of regrets, especially about how it damaged my children," she told the Mail. She added: "Daniel was trying his best, but he could never understand the Western ways and couldn't be the dad that they needed." She maintains that there is "one good thing" to come of their difficult romance, which is their daughter Mitsi. Following their relationship breakdown, Daniel remained on the island, where he now works in a supermarket.
