Critics accuse government of prioritizing profits in controversial energy roadmap: 'Lacks proper organization'

Yahoo16-05-2025

The interim government of Bangladesh has published a draft of its Energy Policy 2025. Though the country is one of the most climate-vulnerable nations, it has continued to trail far behind other countries in its green energy transition, according to The Business Standard.
"[It lacks] proper organization," said Khondaker Golam Moazzem, Research Director at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), believing that the government is rushing the policy's formulation, which has caused it to be incomplete and not practically executable.
Since Bangladesh is so reliant on dirty energy, it continues to protect the economic interests of that industry and has been slow to invest time or money into cleaner energy sources, per the report.
Renewable energy made up a mere 4.5% of Bangladesh's power sources as of June 2023. This includes solar, wind, hydro, and biomass.
As the world transitions away from fossil fuels toward cleaner energy sources and a cleaner economy, long-term investment in fossil fuel companies is becoming a liability. There is a growing push from researchers for governments around the world to put restrictions on new dirty energy projects, which could lead to a decline in the value of the minerals that fuel them.
Sometimes, funds allocated for sustainable projects are instead put toward some of the world's largest polluters, which is a form of greenwashing. Greenwashing is a term used to describe the false or exaggerated claims a company makes to appear more environmentally friendly than it actually is.
Bangladesh's newest energy policy revision promises 20% renewable energy generation by 2030 and 30% by 2041.
Some researchers do not think these goals are realistic or achievable, even though they grossly lag behind other countries, according to the report. Shahriar Ahmed Chowdhury, director of the Centre for Energy Research at United International University, said the plans "leave the targets vague."
Moazzem cited conflicting renewable energy policies as part of the plan's problem, explaining that the discrepancies could confuse investors. "We must recognize that expanding renewable energy within an economic framework heavily dependent on fossil fuels is not practical."
It seems that in order to please investors and make a concerted effort to increase renewable energy production, Bangladesh may need to go back to the drawing board.

Paul Vallas: Chicago must reform how it handles expensive police misconduct lawsuits.

The city's finances and ability to fund essential public services are at a crisis point for many reasons. Dangerously overlooked is the bleeding of millions of taxpayer dollars every month on litigation, the continuation of which cannot be sustained. From 2008 to 2024, Chicago paid out over $1.11 billion in police-related legal settlements and verdicts. In 2025 alone, the city has already approved over $145 million in police settlements, exceeding its budget by a significant margin. It has gotten so bad that the most obvious way for the city to manage risk — the purchase of liability insurance — is rapidly becoming unavailable as the city's insurers, once willing to protect the city from catastrophic losses, have run for the hills. These hundreds of millions in payouts are emblematic of a system in which settlements for police-related incidents have become routine and increasingly expensive. During Kim Foxx's tenure as Cook County state's attorney, more law firms began to specialize in representing individuals accused of violent crimes and in suing the Chicago Police Department for alleged civil rights violations. These firms frequently win enormous, taxpayer-funded settlements. Consider the cases of Gabriel Solache and Arturo DeLeon-Reyes, who were wrongfully convicted of the brutal murder of a young couple and kidnapping of their child. Despite a third perpetrator's unwavering testimony against them, Foxx dropped the charges partially because their cases were handled by a former detective, Reynaldo Guevara, who faces allegations that he bullied and beat defendants. The third perpetrator is in prison serving a life sentence. Foxx's office later withdrew opposition to their certificates of innocence, enabling their lawyers to use these certificates as evidence in lawsuits against the police. This is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern in which convictions are vacated and substantial settlements follow — even when the facts strongly suggest guilt. The election of Judge Eileen O'Neill Burke as state's attorney marked a new era for criminal justice in Chicago. However, the city still faces a backlog of cases initiated during Foxx's tenure, with over 200 wrongful conviction lawsuits pending. The potential liability from these cases is estimated in the billions of dollars. Compounding the problem, the SAFE-T Act and the CPD consent decree have introduced new mandates and oversight requirements, which are likely to fuel even more litigation. In addition, police pursuits have now become the new gold vein for litigators to mine. These developments, combined with a plaintiff-friendly legal environment in Cook County, mean that the city's exposure to massive settlements is only increasing. Police pursuit lawsuits are now a significant financial threat after wrongful conviction cases. These lawsuits often arise when fleeing suspects crash, causing injuries or deaths, and the city is held liable for the actions of police officers making split-second decisions. Since 2019, Chicago taxpayers have paid more than $120 million to resolve just 31 civil claims arising from police pursuits. Here are five key reforms that can be implemented: Runaway settlements and verdicts for alleged police misconduct are not only undermining public safety and police morale — they also are threatening the city's financial stability and its ability to provide essential services. Chicago's leaders must act decisively to restore balance, protect taxpayer dollars and ensure that compensation for genuine victims does not come at the cost of the city's future. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A 21-year-old man was arrested after police say he intentionally drove an SUV into a crowd of protesters in Culpeper, Virginia, on Saturday afternoon. Joseph R. Checklick Jr. of was charged with reckless driving and is being held without bond at the Culpeper County Jail, according to the Culpeper Police Department (CPD). The incident occurred during a "No Kings" rally near James Madison Highway, where officials say he struck at least one person with his vehicle. Police say Checklick intentionally accelerated into the crowd of protesters near James Madison Highway Saturday afternoon. The demonstration was organized by local Democratic groups as part of nationwide protests against the Trump administration's policies. Culpeper Democrats posted on Facebook, thanking the Culpeper Police Department for their "quick response and for keeping our protest safe." The group reported significant attendance at their event, with organizers claiming more than 600 attendees across two locations - over 200 at their Main Street location and over 400 on James Madison Highway. The "No Kings" demonstrations were designed to counter what organizers describe as an excessive military display in the nation's capital. The protests took their name from their opposition to what they characterize as authoritarian tendencies in the current administration. This is a breaking news story. Updates to follow.
