District immunisation officer reviews vaccination drive

Kurnool: Dr Naga Prasad Babu, District Immunization Officer, inspected the immunization programme underway at the Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) in Weaker Section Colony on Saturday. During his visit, he stressed the need to ensure that all prescribed vaccines are administered promptly to pregnant women and children under five years of age. Dr Babu directed healthcare workers to meticulously record vaccination details of children and expectant mothers in the U-WIN and Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portals to maintain accurate records and ensure continuity of care.
As part of efforts to strengthen maternal and child healthcare services, he announced the launch of the Kilkari Message System. Through this initiative, pregnant women will receive weekly voice messages providing crucial healthcare advice. A total of 72 pre-recorded messages, each lasting about 1 minute and 30 seconds, will be sent from the fourth month of pregnancy until one year after childbirth via calls from the number 0124-4451660.
Dr Babu informed that if beneficiaries miss any message, they can dial 14423 to listen to them at their convenience. He clarified that these services are completely free of charge. The Kilkari messages will cover four key areas: maternal health, child health, immunization services, and family planning. Delivered in the voice of Dr Anita, the messages are designed to offer timely advice and guidance to mothers and expecting women, enabling them to make informed decisions and access essential healthcare services. Officials expressed confidence that the programme will help reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in the district.
Dr Babu also urged ANMs and ASHA workers to raise awareness about the Kilkari Message System among all pregnant women and mothers with infants below one year of age to ensure maximum participation and benefit from the initiative.

Work begins on Urban Primary Health Centre building in Nagapattinam after much delay

Construction work for a new Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) building on Marundhu Kothalam Road in Nagapattinam has finally begun, following the demolition of the old and damaged structure last week. Although ₹1.2 crore had been sanctioned under the National Health Mission, the demolition and reconstruction work faced significant delays. Lack of progress prompted several appeals from residents, civil society organisations, and political representatives urging the authorities to expedite the work. K. Venkadesan, town secretary of the CPI(M), said this was the only UPHC serving Nagapattinam town. 'The delay has caused great hardship to the public. The construction must be completed at the earliest without excuses,' he said. Officials from the Health Department said the construction was now under way and was expected to be completed within six months.

PMC's urban health centres win top honours in state-level competition

The Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) Late Pruthak Barate Hospital, Warje, has secured the first prize in the prestigious state-level Kayakalp Awards, said the officials in a statement released on Thursday. The award recognizes excellence in cleanliness and infection control practices in public healthcare facilities. The centre was awarded a cash prize of ₹2 lakh. The Late Baburao Shewale Hospital, another UPHC of PMC, emerged as the first runner-up and received a cash prize of ₹1.5 lakh. Additionally, 15 more UPHCs run by the civic body were granted incentive awards of ₹50,000 each for their commendable efforts under the Kayakalp initiative, said officials. The centres run by PMC were also recognized during the evaluation. Eleven UCHCs received a total reward of ₹11 lakh, with each facility receiving ₹1 lakh for their outstanding adherence to cleanliness and hygiene protocols. 'The recognition reflects PMC's sustained efforts toward providing cleaner, safer, and more efficient healthcare services to citizens,' said PMC in its official statement.

Karnataka to roll out Hepatitis B vaccination drive for healthcare workers

With stocks of over two lakh doses of the Hepatitis B vaccine, the Karnataka Health Department is all set to roll out a drive to vaccinate all healthcare workers against the viral infection that causes inflammation in the liver. The drive, being taken up under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVHCP), will cover over 56,000 healthcare workers who have reasonably anticipated risks for exposure to infectious materials, including blood or bodily fluids, contaminated medical supplies and equipment, or contaminated environmental surfaces, said a senior official in charge of the programme. According to a circular issued by the State Deputy Director (NVHCP) in this regard on Wednesday, June 18, each healthcare worker will be administered three doses of the intramuscular injection into the upper arm at a gap of one month and six months respectively after the first dose. Hepatitis B vaccine stocks have been supplied by the central division to the state vaccine warehouse in Bengaluru. The stocks are now being dispatched to the district drug warehouses as per the requirement. The vaccine should be administered to all health workers (medical and paramedical staff) working in the sub-centre, primary, and community health centres, and taluk and district hospitals of the respective district, the circular stated. The vaccine supplied to the district drug warehouses should be in coordination with the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) officers to understand the requirement under the routine immunisation programme. The District Tuberculosis Control Officers should take action in supplying the vaccine and administering it to the eligible beneficiaries. The report of vaccination to the beneficiaries should be entered in the NVHCP/MIS portal, and the staff will soon be trained on administering the vaccine and reporting, the circular added.
