Manchester City open to letting Ilkay Gündogan join Galatasaray

Galatasaray are considering a move for Ilkay Gündogan, with Manchester City open to a transfer for the 34-year-old midfielder. The Turkish club are believed to have inquired about Gündogan's availability in the winter window but City did not want him to leave midway through the season. But with Pep Guardiola having signed Nico González in February and Tijjani Reijnders in this window, with Rodri again fit after a serious knee injury and Mateo Kovacic expected back from an achilles problem in mid-September, game time for Gündogan may be limited. Although the one-year extension on Gündogan's contract was triggered towards the end of last season after he played a certain number of minutes, he may be allowed to leave without a fee. The German, whose parents were born in Turkey, is believed to have a desire to play for Galatasaray, the Super Lig champions. The former Germany international, who turns 35 in October, suggested he still had much to offer. 'There seems to be a trend at the moment in football where people are saying: 'This player is too old,' or: 'Another one cannot run any more.' But we always have had this in football. 'You need experienced players on the pitch. I know that when I was 18 or 19 I was looking up to those experienced players. Just by watching what they did – and how they did it – I learned. It wasn't always necessary for them to say anything. All young players need some experience around them. Sometimes you don't have to work harder but work smarter.'

European side looking to sign former Man City captain Ilkay Gundogan - just one year after the midfielder made surprise return to the Etihad

Galatasaray are hopeful of landing Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City this summer. Gundogan triggered a one-year extension to his contract at the Etihad Stadium after surpassing a set percentage of minutes for Pep Guardiola 's side over the course of a one-year deal. But there remains interest from the Turkish champions, who view the 34-year-old as ideal to strengthen their midfield area and have already signed one of Gundogan's former team-mates in Leroy Sane. Gundogan left City in the weeks after sealing an historic Treble in 2023, joining Barcelona, only to make a return 12 months later. The Germany international, who has Turkish roots, had been expected to be used as an impact player but ended up registering 50 appearances as injuries hit. Gundogan featured in City's 2-0 win over Wydad AC in the Club World Cup and recently revealed the toll that last season had taken on him. In the post on LinkedIn, the veteran appeared to talk up the prospect of seeing out the final year of his deal. 'I still feel more than connected to City,' he said. 'It still feels like family, we still are a family in the dressing room, Manchester feels like home – this is not a phrase, it's coming from my heart. For me, my wife and my kids. 'For me City is the most professional football club in Europe. That is why, on the one hand, I'm still asking myself so often how we got into this difficult situation this season. 'On the other hand, however, this still gives me confidence that sooner or later we will be back at the very best level, because I know how hard everyone is working – not just our manager, not just my team-mates – everyone at this club. 'And during the last months we already showed that we are back on the right track. I still know how privileged I have been during nearly my whole career having been part of the winning side that often. Maybe that's also the reason why this season felt so challenging.' And despite coming towards the end of his career, Gundogan insisted that experienced heads still have a role to play at the highest level. 'There seems to be a trend at the moment in football where people are saying this player is too old or another one cannot run anymore, but we always have had this in football,' he said. 'You need experienced players on the pitch. I know that when I was 18 or 19, I was looking up to those experienced players. Just by watching what they did – and how they did it – I learnt. It wasn't always necessary for them to say anything.'

Lionel Messi's 'not friends' claim as Cristiano Ronaldo left rival in no doubt

Fans have long wondered just what the relationship between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is like, and the Argentinian legend has now opened up on where he stands with his rival The relationship between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has been the source of feverish speculation for years. The duo, often regarded as the two best players of all time, honed their intense rivalry in La Liga with Messi starring for Barcelona and Ronaldo for Real Madrid. While fans are eager to know if the pair are pals, the Argentinian World Cup winner has now opened up on where he stands with his Portuguese rival. Messi, 37, is still causing waves on the world's stage for Inter Miami, while Ronaldo, 40, now plays for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. ‌ Messi gave a timely reminder of his genius on Thursday, giving Miami their first win the Club World Cup with a breathtaking free-kick against FC Porto. ‌ Afterwards, he discussed his long-term adversary Ronaldo, claiming that they are not actually friends. However, he explained that's only the case as the pair barely get a chance to cross paths. "I have a lot of respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and for the career he's had and continues to have, because he's still competing at the highest level," Messi told DSports. "The competition with him was on the pitch. Each of us wanted to do the best for our team. Obviously, as always, everything stayed on the field. Off the pitch, we are two normal people. We're not friends obviously because we don't spend time together, but we've always treated each other with a lot of respect." His comments echo his take on the relationship that he made eight years ago. Messi told Spanish outlet Marca in 2017: "I don't know if we will be [friends]. Friendship is built through spending time together and getting to know each other. "We have no relationship, mainly because we only see each other at awards ceremonies and that's the only time we speak. Everything is fine, but our lives don't cross over very often." ‌ Does Ronaldo feel the same way? In an interview with Spanish outlet El Chiringuito earlier this year, the ex-Manchester United star claimed he is on good terms with the Miami star due their 'healthy' rivalry – although he has distanced himself from having a friendship with Messi in the recent past. "I have a good relationship with Leo Messi," said Ronaldo this year. "I was translating him in English at an award ceremony too! It was funny. It was a healthy rivalry, we got along." However, speaking in 2023, Ronaldo explained: "I don't see things like that [as a rivalry], the rivalry is gone. It was good, spectators liked it. ‌ "Those who like Cristiano Ronaldo don't have to hate Messi and vice versa. He's followed his path, and I have followed mine, regardless of playing outside of Europe. "The legacy lives on, but I don't see the rivalry like that. We shared the stage many times, it was 15 years. I'm not saying we're friends, I've never had dinner with him, but we're professional colleagues and we respect each other." While the constant debate of just who is the better player, as well as their La Liga battles, have spurred on the question of whether the two are friends - there is another point of contention between the pair: the Ballon d'Or. Messi has been crowned the winner of the prestigious award eight times, while Ronaldo is his closest challenger on five, which has caused some friction. Yet it seems the iconic duo, while not likely to be spotted dining together any time soon, have put their famous rivalry to one side, for now.
