Tosyalı joins global top 50 steelmakers amid record production growth
Türkiye-based steel producer Tosyalı has joined global top 50 steelmakers across three continents with a liquid steel production capacity of 15 million tons, and around 15,000 employees. With sustainability as a central focus, Tosyalı continues to advance in global steel production through its investments in high value-added, qualified steel. The company's growth is supported by its production complexes in various regions, green steel technologies, ongoing R&D and innovation efforts, solid financial structure, and a highly skilled workforce. Amid challenging global conditions in 2024, a difficult year for steel producers worldwide, Tosyalı recorded a significant rise in the international rankings, marking another notable achievement. According to data published by the World Steel Association, the company produced 9.12 million tons of liquid steel in 2024, climbing 21 spots from the previous year to reach 46th place globally. With a 54.3 per cent increase in production, Tosyalı ranked among the world's three fastest-growing steel producers. It has now become Türkiye's largest steel producer and has further consolidated its position as Europe's third-largest. The company's entry into the world's top 50 steel producers also represents a major milestone for the industry. Felipe Servin, CEO & Founder of Sati, described how Sati delivers a Bitcoin wallet entirely through WhatsApp. 'It's really, really simple, fully noncustodial,' Servin said. He added that Sati never holds private keys, ensuring users retain full control. The approach aims to accelerate Bitcoin adoption without requiring new app installs. Users start by sending a message to a WhatsApp bot, choose a PIN, and the app combines that PIN with a fingerprint of their phone to scramble and store the wallet data only on their device. Because Sati never has access to the scrambled data or PIN, only the user can unlock and spend the Bitcoin, much like keeping cash in a personal safe rather than leaving it with a bank. Servin explained Sati uses WhatsApp Business API with custom encryption. 'Once it's encrypted, everything is integrated in WhatsApp,' he said. Servin highlighted WhatsApp's reach in Mexico, Brazil, Türkiye and parts of Africa. 'Most people in the emerging markets can use it with one message, that's the innovation,' he said. Turkiye should investigate ‘police violence' against protesters: Amnesty
ISTANBUL: Amnesty International called on Turkish authorities Thursday to launch an investigation into alleged 'police violence' during a wave of protests this year, saying some instances 'could amount to acts of torture.' The arrest of Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on March 19, the leading opponent of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, sparked Türkiye's worst street protests in over a decade. 'Our findings reveal damning evidence of unlawful force frequently used by law enforcement officers,' said Esther Major, a deputy director at the global human rights group. 'The authorities used tear gas, pepper spray, kinetic impact projectiles and water cannons against people who were simply exercising their rights,' she said in a statement. 'The violations documented constitute cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment and, in some cases, may amount to torture,' Major said, calling for the launch of an investigation. Imamoglu was widely seen as the biggest political rival to Erdogan and his jailing is likely to prevent him from running in the 2028 presidential election. Authorities said they arrested nearly 1,900 people during the protests, most of whom were accused of participating in illegal gatherings. The vast majority have since been released. Amnesty said it had 'verified dozens of videos documenting how protesters were beaten, kicked and dragged on the ground by law enforcement officials even when they were dispersing, not resisting or were already restrained.' The NGO said some 'protesters were subjected to water cannon, tear gas, kinetic impact projectiles by police, often at very close range directly targeting the head and upper body, in violation of international human rights law.' One of them required retinal surgery and may lose sight in one eye, Amnesty said.
