Former Ryder Cupper, who went 'through hell,' emotional as he records first DPWT top-10 in 7 years
Former Ryder Cupper, who went 'through hell,' emotional as he records first DPWT top-10 in 7 years
Could Chris Wood's nightmare finally be over?
The 37-year-old Wood, a former European Ryder Cupper and top-25 player in the world, has spent the last six years battling not only anxiety and burnout but also the frustrating golf results that come from it. He's lost all status, relegated now to being at the mercy of sponsor invites.

That's how he managed his way into this week's Turkish Airlines Open, just his second DP World Tour start of the year following a missed cut in Qatar.
Wood hadn't made a cut on this circuit in nearly three years. His last top-10 finish came at the 2018 KLM Open, where he posted his last of three runner-up showings that season. He hasn't won since capturing his third DPWT title, at the 2016 BMW PGA, which came just a few months before he qualified for his first – and still only – Ryder Cup. He plummeted outside the top 2,000 in the Official World Golf Ranking two years ago and entered this week still at just No. 1,472.
'It's been horrendous to be honest,' Wood said. 'It's been – since 2019 really – I just feel like I've been going through hell.'
But alas, a few shots of hope: Not only did Wood make the weekend at Regnum Carya in Antalya, but he closed in a dazzling 7-under 64 on Sunday to tie for seventh, ending his top-10 drought as well.

'I want to feel like I know my game's there, not just put a score on one day, and I genuinely feel like I'm starting to do that now,' Wood said. 'I've been working so hard at home just quietly with a great team. and it's been a long, old road to be honest.'
While his mental struggles have been forefront, Wood also has dealt with serious neck and back injuries. He described a few years back how an 'unplayable swing' had crept in during his successful run before his game completely fell apart in 2019, the same year that he walked off the course during a tournament in Morocco because he couldn't take the stress anymore and was berated by the tournament official; he'd take 10 weeks off after that.
He lost his DPWT card three years ago. He then played on the Challenge Tour last year before losing that card, too. He's has kept one thing, though.

'I never lost belief in myself,' Wood said. 'You obviously have days where it feels harder than some. The fire in my belly has always been there. I'm relying on invites this year. I'm ready. I'm practicing so well at home that a call last minute is not a problem. I'm ready to go. I played with Oli[ver] Wilson the first couple of days, and he asked how I'm doing it, how I'm practicing at home to be match ready – they're my secrets. The Tour have been good. The medical team have really helped me.
'Hopefully this is a first little step forward, and anyone who wants me at their event, please pick up the phone because I need a few starts this year.'
You heard the man.

Ex-England youth international among group returning for Swindon Women
Swindon Town Women have looked to ensure their defensive stability for next season after bringing back multiple defenders to the squad. Richard Wood has continued to build his squad for next season as Swindon Women look to push for promotion from the FA Women's National League Division One South West. Advertisement Swindon have looked to keep much of the group from last season around after they performed well in finishing third and winning the Wiltshire County Cup. The barrage of contract announcements has persisted with the reveal of five defensive players sticking around. Read more: Swindon Town Women complete raft of contract extensions Swindon Women manager signs new contract for next season Key player pens new contract with Swindon Women Goalkeeper Hannah Cox, who made 17 appearances last season, will remain on between the sticks, having established herself after previous spells with Oxford United, Wycombe Wanderers, and Abingdon United. Advertisement Sahara Osborne-Ricketts, who was part of an England under-17 training camp as a young player, will continue to marshal the defence as she agreed to a new contract, having been a key figure in the side last season. Fellow centre-back Isi Meade has also signed on for next season. The defender established herself in the side last season, making 19 appearances, after arriving from Actonians Ladies last summer. Katie Sherwood is a third defender to commit for next season, another with ties to Oxford, but joined towards the end of the 2023/24 season and was a regular fixture in Wood's side in 2024/25. Taylor MacDonald will also remain an option in the middle of the park, where she has shown herself capable of playing in a more traditional role as well as a holder. Advertisement MacDonald has been a big feature of the last two seasons under Wood, making 50 appearances and netting nine times. As well as these retentions, there was also the announcement of a first contract for 17-year-old attacker Elise Clayton after she had a strong year with Chiarna Deller's development side and made eight appearances last season for the first team, netting once. The youngster who has been with Swindon in the academy since 2012 will be given the chance to show she deserves a permanent role in Wood's first team. Wood said of Clayton: "Elise Clayton is an exceptionally talented young player who demonstrated at the end of last season that she is ready to begin training and earning opportunities with the first team. "In training, she has proven capable of competing for a place at this level. To help her thrive, we must support her, ensure she faces no undue pressure, and allow her to continue enjoying her football.'

Latest MLB Draft projections for Gage Wood after historic performance
Latest MLB Draft projections for Gage Wood after historic performance Gage Wood made some incredible baseball history on Monday, hurling a no-hitter with 19 strikeouts for Arkansas in the College World Series against Murray State. The Razorbacks won, 3-0, as Gage became the first player to toss a no-hitter on this stage since Oklahoma State's Jim Wixson in 1960. Only a hit batter in the eighth inning separated Wood from a perfect game. Still, the timing could't have been any better as Wood closes out his Arkansas career and prepares for the MLB Draft on July 13. Wood was already expected to go high in the draft. Here's the latest look at his draft stock after Monday's all-timer of a performance in Omaha. MLB Prospect Ranking: No. 50 After Wood became Arkansas' closer as a freshman in 2023 and then continued to log high-leverage relief innings as a sophomore, scouts looked forward to him joining the rotation this spring. He came down with a shoulder impingement after his second start and missed two months before coming back for the stretch run. Though his command was sporadic, his combination of stuff and strikes could still land him in the top two rounds. Wood has one of the best fastballs in the Draft, sitting at 94-96 mph and reaching 98. Its combination of velocity and carry, along with his low release height and flat approach angle, produce elite rates of chases, as well as overall and in-zone swing and misses. He relies heavily on his heater and a power 82-85 mph curveball that shows flashes of becoming a plus pitch. Wood's upper-80s slider isn't nearly as effective as his curve and he barely uses a changeup with similar velocity and decent fade. After battling the strike zone as a freshman, he has carried a five percent walk rate the last two seasons. He has the ingredients to succeed as a starter, though he has also had shoulder issues in high school and will have to prove he can handle the workload. Baseball America Mock Draft 4.0 (June 9): No. 21, Houston Astros Wood has been on a rocket ship in recent weeks. He has first-round stuff between his swing-and-miss, mid-90s fastball and a hard biting power curve. There are some Cade Horton/Ty Floyd vibes to Wood's 2025 season and postseason up-arrow surge. Dana Brown has prioritized riding fastballs like Wood's in the past. Some in the industry think this is too high, but we're reaching a bit of a vacuum in the college starter demographic at this point in the draft. ESPN Mock Draft 1.0 (May 28): No. 17, Chicago Cubs Wood is a hot name because of his huge stuff, but he has started only 10 games in college. Some scouts think that if he can make a number of starts for Arkansas this postseason, he could have a rise like Cade Horton, who went No. 7 in 2022 out of Oklahoma and is now in the big leagues for the Cubs. This projection is a little speculative, but I don't think Wood would get out of the 20s if the draft were held today. He is a more refined version of another Arkansas pitcher the Cubs took in the second round in 2023, Jaxon Wiggins. Just Baseball Mock Draft 4.0 (June 16): No. 38, New York Mets If you're looking for the ability to miss bats with the fastball, look no further than Arkansas' Gage Wood. The secondaries haven't quite caught up with the fastball but Wood would (see what I did there?) likely flourish as a starter in a strong Mets pitching development environment. We'll see what the next round of mock drafts look like after the College World Series wraps up.
