The festival is inspired by the mythological tale of Savitri and Satyavan. As per Hindu scriptures, Savitri, with her devotion and unwavering determination, tricked Lord Yama in a way that the god of death was compelled to return the life of her husband Satyavan.
As per the legend, married women observe fast on Vat Savitri Purnima for the well-being and long life of their husbands. They perform special pujas and rituals at the banyan tree, offering prayers and recounting Savitri's story as a mark of devotion to seek blessings for their husbands.
Women wake up early in the morning, take a holy bath and dress up as newlywed brides.
During the day's shubh muhurat, they visit a Vat (banyan) tree and set up a puja place.
They place idols of Satyavan and Savitri and offer grains, sweets, fruits and other items as a part of the ritual.
Then flowers, rice, water, gram seeds and some special dishes made for the occasion are offered to the banyan tree.
Listening to or reading the Savitri-Satyavan Vrat Katha is an integral part of the rituals to complete the day's puja.
After the puja is done, the fasting ladies tie a yellow and red thread around the tree trunk and apply vermilion on it while doing parikrama.
They seek blessings for marital bliss and the longevity of their husbands.
Finally, they break their fast by offering food to the banyan tree.
