He Was a Refugee as a Child. Now, He Runs 11 Businesses.

When Orhan Veli's family arrived in the United States in 1995, failure was not an option.
They were forced to flee ethnic conflict in Azerbaijan as the Soviet Union collapsed — and as refugees in the U.S., they had no choice but to rebuild their lives from scratch. Veli, who was 11 at the time, watched his engineer father become a pizza delivery driver. His mother, a trained artist, found work in a screen-printing factory. Their grit and resilience left an impression on Veli, who eventually graduated from college and began a career in finance.
The corporate world didn't satisfy him. So in 2006, Veli and his father leveraged all the equity in their home for Veli to buy his first franchise, a cheesesteak venture. With everything on the line, once again, failure was not an option. In 2012, Veli and his dad opened their first Saladworks location. After expanding to his second location, he cashed out of cheesesteaks to go all in on salads.

Today, he operates 11 Saladworks locations in the Philadelphia area, and he's the top franchisee in the system. He believes much of his success comes down to his belief that people are resilient and resourceful, just the way his parents were. As such, his top three success strategies are all about supporting his employees.
1. Adapt to your team, not the other way around.
When Veli took over his first restaurant, most of his team spoke only Spanish. Instead of replacing these hard-working employees, he learned Spanish. "It's about finding the most efficient way that you can make things work," he says. "If that means learning a new skill, you have to do it."
2. Don't just identify ambition. Cultivate it.
Veli believes success comes from giving opportunities to diligent employees. He remembers one of his strongest hires: "She couldn't speak English," he says. "I said, 'Don't worry, you'll figure this out. As long as you're hardworking, you'll be fine.' Today, she's a general manager."
3. Create a team of distinctive individuals.
"You need a mix," Veli says. "You need a leader. You need the team cheerleader. You need the critical thinker who says, 'This isn't good enough.' You need the person who thinks outside the box, and the person who can organize it all and ensure we stay within our operational policies."

Kelly Roddy, CEO of Saladworks' parent company, WOWorks, says that Veli has a distinct vision for his businesses — which is unique, but also fits within the overall system. "Orhan is more strategic than other top performers," Roddy says. "We have an overall culture that's based on a set of values — but Orhan has taken that and developed his own set of values and his own culture within his own [stores]. He spends a lot of time with his team members and really focuses on how to motivate them."

With internship application season in full swing, you might be wondering how to make the most of your summer gig — and how to turn it into a full-time offer. Landing an internship at a Big Tech company is highly competitive, but having one on your résumé can help you get in early. Google offers general online guidance for navigating the hiring process, including practicing coding on platforms like CodeLab, Quora, and Stack Overflow. The company also suggests keeping your résumé to one page and considering skills relevant to the role. Business Insider spoke to five former Google interns who turned their summer gigs into full-time job offers at the tech giant. They shared their process of landing internships at Google and advice on landing a permanent offer. Nancy Qi Nancy Qi graduated in the winter and planned to return to Google full-time last June after spending three summers there as an intern, the first two with STEP and the last with Google's Software Engineering internship. Her primary advice: start early. Qi said she started taking data structure classes in high school at a community college and was practicing with leet code the summer before she started college, well before she had interviews lined up. When Qi started sending out applications in the fall of her freshman year, she said her résumé mainly had website initiatives and leadership experience for volunteering clubs from high school. She said she also had some part-time tutoring experience teaching math and English, " I think at that age, you're not expected to have so much CS experience or coding experience," Qi said. "So I think if you have some leadership experience or experience that shows your character, I think that's important at that time." During her internship, Qi said she thinks her strong suit was building relationships with her teammates by getting lunch with them every day. She said doing helped to create "team chemistry," and she also said it helped her feel excited for work and "motivated to pump out code." Islina (Yunhong) Shan Islina (Yunhong) Shan interned at Google three times, beginning in the summer of 2022. She graduated from an accelerated computer science Master's program at Duke University and started a full-time role as a software engineer at the tech giant this spring. Shan first participated in STEP and later in the Software Engineering Internship, which is a more competitive program geared toward technical development. When she applied for her first internship, Shan said she had some hackathon experiences and some technical projects from school. After she sent her résumé, she was invited to two rounds of final interviews, both of which were technical and back-to-back, she said. Her advice to interns hoping to secure full time jobs: choose a team during the match process that you're actually interested in. "Interest is really important in driving you to finish the project," Shan said. She also said it's important to choose a team with a manager you can see yourself working with because you'll have to communicate with them regularly. When she first started her internship, she said she set unrealistic goals. Once she adjusted expectations, she started seeing more progress. Shan suggested seeking help if needed, adding that Google engineers tend to be friendly. Lydia Lam Lydia Lam graduated from college in 2024 and participated in three Google internships, beginning with a STEP internship in 2021. In her internship résumé, Lam included a seven-week Google program for high-school graduates called the Computer Science Summer Institute. She also had experience with a summer program for girls who code and a tech consulting student organization that she joined during her first semester of college. Lam also recommended applying early in the recruiting cycle and said programs geared toward first and second-year students tend to be more aligned with that experience level. Lam said "strong engineering practices" are highly valued at the company and mentioned feeling imposter syndrome and wanting to impress her internship host. However, she said asking questions sooner rather than later can help projects get done more quickly. "It's much more efficient to ask someone else who knows a lot more than you try to figure it out longer," Lam said. She also suggested "producing a lot of artifacts," whether designs or other "tangible pieces of work," that can help show your skill set and contributions. Tawfiq Mohammad Tawfiq Mohammad interned for two summers at Google before becoming a full-time software engineer at the tech giant. He said the summer after his first year in college, he didn't have any internships, so he took summer classes and did his own projects at home, like a gadget that read the license plate on his car and opened the garage without him having to press a button. Mohammad's biggest advice for incoming interns is to be prepared for imposter syndrome. Mohammad said the "biggest block" for him at first was being scared to do anything, and he suggested tuning out those negative feelings as much as possible. "You're going to feel very out of place initially," Mohammad told BI. "I honestly felt like I had no idea what I was doing." He said interns should set a goal to "learn as much as possible" from the more experienced employees and try to believe that they, too, felt like they didn't fully "know what they were doing" at one point. " They're really smart so you want to absorb as much information as you can from them," Mohammad said. He also suggested thinking "outside the box." " You're going to be given a project that summer and try to own that project. Try to own it from A to Z," Mohammad said. He also recommended networking with other interns and team members, adding that Google provides a number of opportunities to do so. "It's good to build up a good network of successful people and it's just good to network with people that are farther along the career path than you," Mohammad said. Zachary Weiss Zachary Weiss interned at Google for three summers before landing a full-time job as a software engineer in the Cloud department. He said he wasn't thinking about summer internships when he started as a freshman at the University of Michigan, but an older computer science major encouraged him to apply to Google's STEP program. Weiss said he was "ecstatic" to get the offer from Google a few months later. He went on to intern in multiple teams before returning full-time as a software engineer on the Cloud team. The Googler had two main takeaways from his internships, one of which was the importance of showing a "concerted effort" to management. Google interns are given a summer project, and Weiss said that being proactive and anticipating problems in advance is key to the job. He said a former internship manager complimented him for identifying an issue with a "one in a thousand" chance of occurring. He said interns should think about all the "weird edge cases" and speak up instead of waiting for a manager to say something. "You're given work that would have been going to a full-time employee," Weiss said, adding that employees value your opinion and voice. Weiss said communication was another key skill that he didn't anticipate would be so pivotal. He said that in school, students tend to focus on learning the principles, algorithms, and data structures involved in programming. In a workplace, though, verbal skills matter, too, Weiss said. "My day-to-day, I speak a lot more English. I read a lot more English. I read and write and talk and communicate a lot more than I am actually coding," Weiss said. "And I think communication is something that's really important." He said that at the University of Michigan, there were three courses about technical communications, like writing design memos, emails, and presentations. He said many students didn't take the class seriously, and it ended up teaching a crucial skill.

Jeremy Barker started buying real estate when his startup needed a bigger headquarters. He's scaled to more than 30 properties that bring in seven figures in annual rental income. Barker's strategy involves finding and buying overlooked properties. Jeremy Barker stumbled into real estate investing when his startup outgrew its original space, prompting him to look into large commercial properties. He bought a bigger space than he needed, leased nearly 80% of it to tenants, and started generating rental income from his new headquarters. What's more, he said the building has more than quadrupled in value within the past decade. From there, "I just rinsed and repeated," Barker told Business Insider. The entrepreneur, who started his business Murphy Door to supplement his $1,600 a month firefighter paycheck, has grown to more than 30 commercial and residential properties that generate seven figures in annual rental income. BI confirmed his property ownership by reviewing his 2024 property tax notices and lease agreements between him and his tenants. One key to his real estate strategy is buying overlooked properties. That's how he scores deals and, ultimately, sees millions of dollars in appreciation. Barker is looking at buildings that most people aren't. "I like to look for pigs," he said — meaning, something that's dilapidated or doesn't look nice, but has potential. "We could put lipstick on it and make it look really pretty." For example, while driving through his market in Utah, he noticed a 90,000-square-foot call center right off the highway. The old office space, which was still littered with desks, chairs, and servers, had been empty for a couple of years. "The property is just dilapidated," he recalled. "The outside's ugly, the landscape's overgrown, the trees are too big, the inside looks really overwhelming because it's a lot of square footage with a lot of stuff." While most investors wouldn't even do a walkthrough, Barker saw an opportunity. "Coming from a construction background, I'm like, I could cut down the big trees, get the yard cleaned up, paint the exterior for cheap, put new LED on the outside, gut all the cubicles, sell those for some kind of money, and then I can do new flooring," he said. He knew he had leverage, since the building had been sitting on the market for years. It was listed for about $3.4 million, and Barker said he initially offered $2 million: "It came back to $2.9 million, and then I found about $500,000 or $600,000 worth of deferred maintenance issues that they credited me at close, so I ended up buying this for $2.4 million." Before closing, he put a "for lease" sign up outside the building and landed his first tenants before even putting any money down. Within 12 months of purchasing the property, it was fully leased. Barker isn't just looking for dilapidated buildings that have potential. He has specific location criteria. "I tell my realtor, 'Find me something that is in a good spot. It doesn't have to be the best spot. It just has to have some lower vacancy rates in the area. It has to be pretty accessible to business, so good highways next to it.'" Barker has two tried-and-true strategies that help him land deals. "First and foremost, the secret is: How long has it been on the market? How desperate are these guys?" he said. "The long market tells are important to me." Chances are, he'll have more negotiating power on a building that's been vacant for more than a year than one that just came on the market. Next, he's looking for companies that are moving out of their office space. "This is kind of my secret recipe: If I can find companies that are selling their main office. Usually, it's single-tenant occupants held by the corporation that are now moving to a different headquarters." This type of seller is usually not looking to lease the space — they just want to sell, explained Barker: "If you can find a single company that's leaving, they put it for sale only and it sits there for four or five years because everybody sees the building for sale, but it never says 'for lease.' Most people aren't going to buy the whole big building." That's where he'll come in, sign a purchase and sale agreement that allows him to immediately put up a 'for lease' sign before closing, and "all of a sudden, your phone starts blowing up," he said. "So if you can get it to where you're the future lessor, and you get the calls when the sign transfers from 'for sale' to 'for lease,' now you can see demand."
