Stone will be laid for Akhanda Godavari project on June 19, says Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh

The Hindu06-06-2025

Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh on Friday said the Central government-sponsored Akhanda Godavari Project would usher in fresh charm in the areas surrounding the Godavari.
In a statement, Mr. Durgesh said that Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan and BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari would lay the foundation stone for the project on June 19.
He said the ₹97 crore sanctioned for the project under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI)-2024-25 scheme would be utilised to develop tourism infrastructure in Rajamahendravaram, Dowleswaram, Kadiyam, Kovvur, Nidadavolu, and surrounding areas. The works were expected to be completed before the upcoming Godavari Pushkarams, he said.
Modernisation of Havelock Bridge
The 127-year-old Havelock Bridge, a symbol of historical and cultural heritage, would be modernised by adding new features such as waterfalls, glass bridges, gaming zone, space-themed experiences, Urban Haat craft bazar, hanging gardens, hologram zoo, time travel exhibits, rail museum and aquarium tunnels.
The Minister said the nearby Pushkar Ghat would be upgraded to make it a significant spiritual destination, enhancing connectivity between the bridge and the ghat to form a dynamic tourist destination. The surrounding temples would also be developed with aesthetic architectural design to usher in spiritual ambience for year-round pilgrimage, he said.
The famous Kadiyam nurseries, one of the largest in the country, would also be developed into a tourist attraction. The Godavari canals and the culturally significant locations in the vicinity would be restored and beautified, Mr. Durgesh said, adding that tourists would have boating and leisure rides to spend fun moments.
He said the Sri Kota Sattemma temple at Timmarajupalem in Nidadavolu mandal, a prominent ancient spiritual centre known for its grand entrance and towering 'rajagopuram', would be given a facelift by construction of additional pilgrim accommodation facilities and by modernising the 'rajagopuram'.

Bengal ranks third among foreign tourists' fave Indian destinations

1 2 Kolkata: Bengal has emerged as one of India's top tourism hotspots for foreign travellers, clocking a record 32 lakh international tourist arrivals in 2023–24 — the third highest in the country after Maharashtra and Gujarat, Bengal's tourism minister Indranil Sen said in the assembly on Thursday. This marks a significant jump from 27.1 lakh in 2022–23 and just 10.4 lakh in 2021–22, underscoring the state's growing global appeal and tourism turnaround post-Covid, he said. Sen said the state accounted for 14.8% of India's foreign tourist arrivals last year. "This is a huge achievement. Bengal is firmly on the international tourism map," Sen said in response to a question by BJP MLA Bishwanath Karak. The data, sourced from 'India Tourism Statistics 2023' released by the Union ministry of tourism, places Bengal alongside national tourism giants. Sen debunked a common perception that a bulk of Bengal's foreign tourist inflow is limited to visitors from neighbouring Bangladesh. "Only 1.8 lakh out of the 32 lakh foreign tourists came from Bangladesh. Over 27 lakh were from Europe, Russia, and Australia," he said. One of the biggest tourism magnets remains Kolkata's Durga Puja, which was inscribed in Unesco's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search ads Learn More Undo In 2023, during the festival period from Mahalaya to Diwali, the city welcomed over 5 lakh foreign visitors — with trade estimates suggesting at least 20,000 were international travellers during the five puja days in Kolkata. Anil Punjabi, national committee member of Travel Agents Federation of India, said, "We are already getting puja bookings from Canada, Spain, Europe and UK. The festive charm, the craftsmanship on display, and Bengal's value-for-money factor make it an irresistible destination during this time." Hill stations, particularly Darjeeling and Kurseong, are also witnessing a massive influx of foreign visitors. "Bengal's hill stations are now more preferred than overcrowded destinations like Shimla and Kullu-Manali. Tea tourism is popular too," said Manav Soni, national committee member of Travel Agents Association of India. Purulia and Bankura — once peripheral to Bengal's tourism economy — are now gaining traction. Launched on April 22, an eco-tourism centre near Ayodhya Hills run by local enthusiasts has already reported 87% occupancy, Sen said. The Purulia Tourism Development Council has been formed to assist local tourism stakeholders and attract more visitors. Bengal has also taken a pioneering step in professionalising its tourism industry. The state now boasts the highest number of certified tourist guides in the country — 1,022 — trained under its Tourist Guide Certification Scheme. Bengal's strategic location as a gateway to the Northeast has also given it a dual advantage. Tourists exploring states like Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya often transit through Bengal. New spiritual landmarks, like the Jagannath temple in Digha, are also becoming major pilgrimage and tourist attractions, travel agents said.

Delhi rain: 14 flights diverted at airport, city faces traffic snarls and waterlogging

Flights were hit, several areas were waterlogged and traffic jams ensued — even as Delhi continued to experience relief from heatwave conditions on Tuesday, flyers, commuters, and residents were inconvenienced due to the weather conditions. At the Indira Gandhi International Airport, at least 14 flights were diverted on Tuesday between 1 pm and 5 pm, said sources. The airport, on its official X handle, had warned of a possible impact on flight operations due to the 'inclement weather'. Airlines had also put out statements, advising flyers to reach the airport early. 'Rainy conditions in Delhi have led to blocked roads and slower movement across parts of the city. We know this can be inconvenient, especially when you are heading to the airport. We recommend planning extra time for your commute and checking your flight status through our website or mobile app,' Indigo wrote on X. Several areas of the Capital faced waterlogging. Of the 14 complaints received by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on waterlogging and falling of trees, Karol Bagh zone topped the list with four complaints — one each from areas of Sudarshan Park, Kirti Nagar, and two from Karam Pura. The Public Works Department (PWD) received over 20 complaints concerning waterlogging on many key stretches. The downpour led to knee-deep waterlogging in several areas, like the underpass near Delhi Cantonment, Zakhira Underpass, Pul Prahladpur, ITO, Delhi-Najafgarh Road and Delhi- Rohtak Road, affecting vehicular movement. PWD officials said pumps were deployed to clear out the water, underlining that the operations were time-consuming at Zakhira Underpass and Mahipalpur flyover. Visuals that surfaced on social media captured the situation in the Mahipalpur area, where around four DTC buses were stranded. As powerful winds swept through the city before the rains began, several trees were also uprooted. The MCD received complaints about trees falling in Vasant Kunj and Naraina Village. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leveraged the opportunity to hit out at the BJP-led Delhi government, accusing it of monsoon mismanagement. In a post on X, AAP wrote, 'Every engine of the 4-engine BJP government in Delhi gets jammed in a light rain. There is no arrangement for drainage in the BJP government; the roads are submerged in water. Delhi is stuck in traffic jams, but the propaganda vehicle of the BJP's lies is running at full speed.' Leader of Opposition Atishi slammed Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for not taking action to prevent flooding. Reposting the traffic police's monsoon alert on X, Atishi questioned, 'Where is Delhi's Chief Minister who said that roads will not be flooded during rains?' Among the neighbouring cities, Gurgaon also witnessed waterlogging in several parts. Residents cited incomplete desilting work and maintenance of stormwater drains as reasons for waterlogging. Sectors 4, 21, 40, 41, and 45 were among the affected areas. (with PTI inputs)
