Cowboys former first-round pick has to improve to avoid dreaded bust label The 2024 first-round pick was benched last season, but Dallas is giving him a second shot to protect Dak Prescott's blindside.
Tyler Guyton didn't sugarcoat his rookie season performance. He didn't blame injuries... he didn't hide behind coaching turnover... he owned it.
That level of mindset is a positive one to hear, especially for a first-round pick who's already facing questions about whether he can live up to his draft status. Bleacher Report's Matt Holder recently included Guyton on his list of 2024 First-Round Picks Who Must Bounce Back in 2025 to Avoid Bust Label, a nod to just how steep the expectations remain in Dallas.
"I didn't do too good last season, I want to do better, I want to be the guy that can be depended on," Guyton told reporters. "I'm not gonna make any excuses, I just didn't play as good as I needed to last year. I'm coming with a different attitude this year to become a better player."
Guyton, selected 29th overall out of Oklahoma, struggled in both pass protection and the run game. He gave up six sacks, drew 18 flags, and posted a sub-50 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. By the end of the year, the Cowboys benched him in favor of veteran Chuma Edoga.
The team made it clear during this offseason's activities they're giving the second-year tackle another chance. Despite a shaky debut, Dallas didn't bring in a veteran to challenge him, instead opting to develop from within. That includes 2023 fifth-rounder Asim Richards, who saw limited action last season, and rookie Ajani Cornelius, who may need time to adjust to the pro level.
The trust in Guyton is there, but so is the pressure to step up at a spot still looking to replace future Hall of Famer Tyron Smith.
Dallas is still chasing a championship in what feels like the twilight of their current Super Bowl window. With a core that has multiple spots up for grabs, and a quarterback in Dak Prescott who will be 32 and coming off a season-ending hamstring injury, the margin for error is razor thin. And on a line that lost stalwart Zack Martin, who retired this offseason, Guyton stepping up is essential to a young line on a young team looking to return to postseason form.
The Cowboys are betting that mindset shift, and another offseason under his belt, will be enough to solidify him as their left tackle of the future. If not, head coach Brian Schottenheimer and his staff could be forced at trying any of the other options waiting in the wings. But make no mistake, the job is still Guyton's to lose.

Paige Bueckers' Behavior Toward Kaitlyn Chen Before WNBA Game is Turning Heads
Paige Bueckers' Behavior Toward Kaitlyn Chen Before WNBA Game is Turning Heads originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When the Golden State Valkyries signed Kaitlyn Chen to a contract on Sunday, many were quick to notice the fact that she would be available for the team's game against her former UConn Huskies teammate Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings. Advertisement Naturally, fans were ecstatic to hear that Chen was getting a shot at the WNBA and that her first game would be against Bueckers. Golden State initially drafted the 23-year-old guard with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2025 draft, but she didn't make the cut for the team's final roster. Fortunately, with some Valkyries players taking a temporary leave for EuroBasket 2025, the Valkyries had some spots open up, allowing them to give Chen a chance. Now, ahead of the Valkyries' game against the Wings on Tuesday, it didn't come as a surprise that Chen and Bueckers shared a moment. In a video posted by the WNBA, Chen can be seen approaching Bueckers, tapping her fellow rookie's back and quickly hugging her. Bueckers was all smiles as she also embraced Chen, clearly happy to see her friend make it to the league. Fans absolutely loved the interaction, with many taking it to the comments section to share their reactions. Advertisement "This got me giggling kicking my feet. Can't wait to see them play against each other!!" a commenter wrote. Another one said, "best reunion ever." "The stuff that can heal hearts," a fan added. A supporter gushed, "aww stop it i miss them." "Paige's hugs seem so warm and sweet," a fifth follower remarked. A sixth social media user stated, "this is so cute." Dallas Wings Make Announcement After Winning Third Game of the Season
Dallas Wings Make Announcement After Winning Third Game of the Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Wings have largely struggled this 2025 WNBA season. Despite having Paige Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale leading their backcourt, they entered Friday's game against the Connecticut Sun with the worst record in the league at 2-11. Advertisement Fortunately, against a fellow bottom team in the Connecticut Sun, the Wings got their third victory. Not only that, but they also secured their first winning streak, having beaten the Golden State Valkyries in their previous outing. Bueckers led the way for the Wings with 21 points, two rebounds, seven assists and two steals. She shot 7-of-16 from the field in 36 minutes of action to propel Dallas to a narrow 86-83 victory. Tina Charles had 26 points for the Sun, but she didn't get much help, with Jacey Sheldon and Aneesah Morrow being their next best scorers with 10 points each. Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers and forward Maddy Butler II-Imagn Images After the win, the Wings naturally announced their Player of the Game. Interestingly, it was not Bueckers who claimed the honor. Instead, it was rookie guard Aziaha James who earned the recognition. Advertisement James finished with 17 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting, while adding five rebounds and five assists. "With a career high 17 pts, Aziaha James is your @childrens Player of the Game!" the Wings wrote, along with an edited image showing the 22-year-old's stats from the game. Naturally, fans were hyped up for Aziaha James, who was averaging 2.9 points entering the contest. "Zaza nation it's our time," a commenter wrote. Another one shared, "Looove that for her!" A fan added, "We're so proud of you Zaza." "Love to see this. Love to watch her do her thing!" a follower remarked. A hyped supporter shared, "ZAZA HERE TO STAY." Advertisement James was drafted 12th overall by the Wings in the 2025 WNBA Draft. Prior to jumping to the pros, she played four years with the NC State Wolfpack. Mavericks Vet Makes Major Free Agency Decision: Report
Mavericks Vet Makes Major Free Agency Decision: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Following a 2024 playoff run that led them back to the NBA Finals for the first time in 13 years, the Dallas Mavericks' future looked pretty bright in 2024-25. Advertisement But Dallas general manager Nico Harrison shocked the world when he traded franchise centerpiece Luka Donic, already a five-time All-NBA First Teamer with the club at age 25, to the Los Angeles Lakers for a relatively muted return. Doncic and big men Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris were shipped off to L.A. in exchange for oft-hurt 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis, who was 31 at the time, plus shooting guard Max Christie and a single future first round draft pick. The Lakers and Mavericks both rerouted 2025 second round selections to the Utah Jazz, as L.A. needed to include a third team to take on the contract of little-used second-year guard Jalen Hood-Schifino. Bringing in Davis, still a terrific two-way player, for the much younger Doncic wasn't a terrible All-Star-for-All-Star haul if Harrison was truly unconvinced that Doncic was capable of repeating his 2024 success — the big issue was the returning draft equity. For comparison's sake, the Orlando Magic just had to surrender four first round picks, plus one first round pick swap, to acquire shooting guard Desmond Bane — who has never been an All-Star and gets hurt with frustrating frequency — from the Memphis Grizzlies. Jerome Miron-Imagn Images Harrison's asset management came under harsh scrutiny... for a time. Advertisement But when the Mavericks fell out of the playoff hunt and lucked into the No. 1 pick in this month's upcoming 2025 NBA Draft (sure to be Duke superstar forward Cooper Flagg), all was (almost) forgiven. Now, another key roster piece has made a decision on his future in Dallas. Sources inform Marc Stein of The Stein Line (via Substack) that reserve big man Dwight Powell has picked up his $4 million player option for 2025-26. His deadline to do so was Tuesday, a day before the start of the draft. Last year, the 6-foot-10 Stanford product played sparingly last season, and likely predicted that he wasn't going to be able to surpass that $4 million (a notch above what he'd fetch with a veteran's minimum contract) on the open market. In 55 contests, the 33-year-old averaged 2.1 points on .689/.400/.651 shooting splits and 2.1 rebounds.
