‘This is what our roads have come to': Mumbai resident's Reddit post on filthy streets goes viral

Indian Express13-06-2025

A concerned resident of Mumbai's Oshiwara area has taken to Reddit to express frustration over the deteriorating state of sanitation in the locality. The post, which includes seven photographs of roadside garbage piles and construction debris, has gone viral with over 800 upvotes, drawing significant public attention to an issue that many believe is both a civic and societal failure.
'I'm writing this out of genuine concern and frustration,' the user wrote. 'I am a resident of Behraum Baug, Oshiwara, and it has become a common sight to see garbage dumped right on the roadside and even on the dividers. Piles of plastic, food waste, construction debris you name it. It's not just an eyesore anymore; it's a serious health hazard, especially with the monsoon around the corner.'
Highlighting the implications for public health, the user wrote, 'This is turning into a breeding ground for diseases, mosquitoes, rodents, and foul smell everywhere. Every civilian walks past it, elderly people live near it. It's disgusting.'
The post also raises questions about the role of local authorities. 'Is the richest municipal corporation of India even aware of what's going on? Is anyone inspecting these areas? Are there no dustbins or is this just sheer apathy? It is 2025 till when are we going to struggle with the basics like roads and proper waste management?'
The resident also acknowledged the public's role in the problem, writing, 'But honestly, we also need to look at ourselves. People in the area are responsible for being so careless. Is it so hard to carry garbage a little further to a bin or wait for collection services?'
The post concluded with an open appeal for suggestions: 'This isn't a rant for the sake of complaining. I need to know if there is a proper grievance portal to get this issue solved.
This is what our roads have come to—piles of garbage, zero accountability.

The post prompted an influx of responses from fellow citizens, many offering potential solutions and personal anecdotes. One user suggested leveraging social media to engage with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 'Write a complaint to the BMC on Twitter. Call them if you can. We've had similar problems in our area and they're pretty good at cleaning up quickly. BMC even stationed someone at a problem spot for a few days, but things went back to how they were. I doubt the BMC can do anything here—it's the people. They have complete disregard for their surroundings. Changing that would mean changing habits, and that's no small task.'
Another comment pointed to systemic issues, stating, 'I have been seeing this for the past 33 years. It's a cocktail of no garbage collection services for slum-dwellers and a general disregard for cleanliness among people. Add to that builders illegally dumping construction debris and the garbage mound only grows.'
A more practical suggestion came from a user who recommended a government app, 'There is one app—Swachhata MoHUA. If you click a picture of the garbage and fill out their form, someone from the government usually comes to clean the area within 24 hours. That was the case initially; it's worth trying again.'
Another user commented, 'I genuinely want to know where do the good engineering minds of this country go? We need serious technological solutions to move mountains of trash. Can no one address the layers upon layers of bureaucracy?'

Mumbai Water Alert: Andheri, Vile Parle Residents To Be Impacted From Tomorrow Till...

The BMC announced that the Metro-7A construction work will affect water supply in parts of K-ward from tomorrow till next weekend. Residents in parts of Mumbai's Vile Parle (East) and areas between Andheri station and the Western Express Highway are set to face low water pressure for a week. The affected localities include Old Nagardas Marg, New Nagardas Marg, Mograpada, and Andheri-Kurla Marg, with the disruption scheduled from Sunday, June 22, to Saturday, June 28. The week-long issue is linked to ongoing maintenance work and may impact daily routines in these neighbourhoods. On June 20, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued an advisory about a temporary disruption in water supply. Parts of the K-East Ward will be affected over the coming week due to ongoing construction work for the Metro-7A project. As a result, residents in the affected areas can expect low water pressure during this period. In its advisory, the civic body has advised citizens to store adequate water in advance and to use it sparingly to avoid inconvenience. The BMC, in a statement quoted by Mid-Day, explained that the ongoing work is part of the Mumbai Metro-7A project. The BMC clarified that the ongoing low water pressure in parts of K-East Ward is due to excavation work under the Metro-7A project. As per the statement, a tunnel-boring machine will dig beneath an active 1,800 mm water canal near Bamanwada, Andheri (East). 'Under the Mumbai Metro-7A project, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority will be excavating under the operational 1,800-mm diameter corporation canal of Veravali reservoir (24×7), near Bamanwada in Andheri (East), in the K-East Ward through a tunnel-boring machine," BMC said in a statement as quoted by Mid-Day. – In Vile Parle (East), residents will experience low water pressure between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM daily throughout the affected week. – Meanwhile, areas such as Old Nagardas Marg, New Nagardas Marg, Mograpada, and Andheri-Kurla Marg—specifically the stretch from Andheri Station to the Western Express Highway—will receive water at low pressure between 8:00 PM and 9:30 PM. Residents in these zones are advised to plan their water usage accordingly and store water in advance to avoid disruptions to daily routines. First Published:

Texas man suffers burns on 40 percent of his body after saving dog from house fire

A Texas man has endured a harrowing ordeal after suffering third-degree burns to nearly half of his body while saving his dog from a house fire. The blaze, which was caused by a fuel leak, occurred at Zain Cano's San Antonio home on May 22, as reported by The People. A Texas man was left hospitalised for a month after a gas leak caused a fire; he ran inside to rescue his dog.(Reddit) (Also read: 'Struggle with English, cut lines, litter': Texas-based founder slams Gujaratis) According to Cano's detailed post on Reddit, the incident began when he had been working on his motorcycle and failed to secure the fuel line. The leaked petrol seeped into the carpet and ignited, triggering the house fire. 'Luckily I was the only one home at the time,' he wrote. 'But I realised my dog was in the house and ran in to get him.' Though Cano initially managed to escape the fire with minimal injuries, he rushed back into the flames upon realising that his dog, Clarence, was still inside. That act of bravery cost him dearly. Third-degree burns and prolonged hospital stay By the time Cano emerged with Clarence, the fire had engulfed the house. His girlfriend, Jenna Carter, later revealed through a GoFundMe appeal that Cano suffered third-degree burns covering 40% of his body and required an extended hospital stay lasting over a month. 'He's going to need multiple weeks of continuous medical care and help from me,' Carter wrote. 'He has to use a walker and cannot use his hands.' She added that the couple is now homeless and seeking donations to secure a temporary, accessible place to live during Cano's recovery. Community support and ongoing challenges Carter's fundraising page describes the couple's urgent need for a 'stable environment' where Cano can heal. 'Anything that's able to be contributed will help immensely and go straight into finding an affordable, handicap-friendly place to stay to make this transition for Zain as painless and worry-free as possible,' she explained. Cano, meanwhile, continues to grapple with the emotional and physical toll of the incident. 'The recovery process has been literally the worst experience of my life,' he shared on Reddit. 'I feel horrible because my family is now homeless because of my mistake. We're staying at a motel for the time being but it's expensive, and I can't work and probably won't be able to for at least another month or more.'
