Fresno State wins Mountain West Conference championship for second straight time
The Fresno State baseball team is headed to the NCAA tournament after defeating San José State 9-1 in the Mountain West Conference championship on Saturday in Mesa, Ariz.
The celebration was marred, however, by an unfortunate injury to Sky Collins, who went to second base and his ankle buckled under the bag after sliding in the bottom of the seventh inning.
There was a long delay as trainers tended to Collins, who remained on the ground for more than 20 minutes. He was carted off and placed in an ambulance and taken to a local hospital for further treatment.
The former Buchanan High/Fresno City College standout was key for the Bulldogs during the tournament when he went 6 for 13 with a triple, home run, five runs scored and an RBI.
'That's a tough one in this moment,' Fresno State coach Ryan Overland told Mountain West Network Karlie Drew. 'Obviously that took a lot of air out of that game there.'
The game went on and the Bulldogs didn't allow the delay to bother them to win behind Murf Gray's three-run home run in the fourth inning. He was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for back-to-back seasons, much like the Bulldogs repeating.
Bryce Armstrong picked up the win after pitching 5.2 innings and striking out eight.
'It's been so many ups and downs,' Gray said.. 'So many struggles we went through from the injuries. Sky Collins busting his butt every day. We did this for him. That injury he just went through, we're praying for him, hoping he gets better soon, but we can't thank him enough for playing hard for us.'
Overland is proud how his Bulldogs came to play in Mesa and never backed down.
It is Fresno State's second straight Mountain West title.
'We challenged them really hard early with some tough road series,' he said. 'We lost some games that we were in, and these guys never stopped.'
The NCAA tournament selection show is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday and will air on ESPN2 or ESPNU.

Two Chanticleer runners reached base in the top of the first, but neither of them was able to score. In the bottom of the first inning, LSU would draw first blood as Derek Curiel walked and Steven Milam hit an RBI single to bring him around to score and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, Coastal Carolina would get a runner in scoring position with two outs. Jake Brown struck out with two outs to strand him at third and keep the game 1-0. In the bottom of the sixth inning, LSU had another chance to score as Milam walked, and then an errant throw to first on a pick-off attempt almost resulted in extra bases for Milam, but the ball hit the umpire, so Milam was unable to advance. That proved costly as Hernandez hit a single that would have scored Milam had he been able to advance. Instead, LSU had runners on the corners with two outs, and Chris Stanfield grounded out to end the inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Daniel Dickinson was hit by a pitch on a 3-2 count, but after review, he was called out as it was determined that he leaned into the pitch for out number one. Braswell would ground out, Curiel reached on an infield single, and Ethan Frey was called out on a check swing for out number three. Anderson's 3-hitter against Coastal Carolina in CWS finals opener puts LSU 1 win away from title

(AP) — Kade Anderson pitched a three-hitter in his second straight dominant start, and LSU moved within a win of its second national championship in three years with a 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of the College World Series finals Saturday night. The Chanticleers (56-12) lost for the first time in 27 games and must win Sunday to force a third and deciding game Monday night. LSU (52-15) made Steve Milam's RBI single in the first inning stand up with Anderson getting stronger as the game progressed against a Coastal Carolina team that had won its first three CWS games by a combined 24-9. The lefty, a projected top-three pick in next month's MLB amateur draft, was just as good as he was in LSU's CWS opener against Arkansas last weekend. He has allowed one run and six hits and struck out 17 in 16 innings in Omaha. Against the Chanticleers he struck out 10, but he had to deal with traffic on the basepaths after issuing three of his five walks in the first two innings and hitting two batters. He was up to the challenge. The Chanticleers were 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position. Anderson (12-1) walked pinch-hitter Domenico Tozzi with two outs in the ninth, prompting a mound visit from pitching coach Nate Yeskie. Anderson then got Wells Sykes to fly out to end the game. Anderson and catcher Luis Hernandez embraced, and then their teammates mobbed them behind the mound.
