
Relax, and think of your skin
Yes, a hot bath feels lovely, but there are things you need to watch, write Amanda Meyer and Monika Zimanyi.
The weather is getting cooler and many of us are turning to hot showers and baths to warm up and wind down.
But what actually happens to your skin when you have really hot showers or baths? YOUR LARGEST ORGAN
Your skin is your largest organ, and has two distinct parts: the epidermis on the outside, and the dermis on the inside.
The epidermis is made up of billions of cells that lay in four layers in thin skin (such as on your eyelids) and five layers in thick skin (such as the on sole of your foot).
The cells (keratinocytes) in the deeper layers are held together by tight junctions. These cellular bridges make waterproof joins between neighbouring cells.
The cells on the outside of the epidermis have lost these cellular bridges and slough off at a rate of about 1000 cells per one centimetre squared of skin per hour. For an average adult, that's 17 million cells per hour, every day.
Under the epidermis is the dermis, where we have blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, pain receptors, pressure receptors and sweat glands.
Together, the epidermis and dermis (the skin):
• protect you from ultraviolet radiation from the Sun
• synthesise vitamin D3, which helps your intestines absorb calcium
• protect you against bacteria, parasites, fungi and viruses
• regulate your body temperature via the dilation of blood vessels and sweat glands releasing sweat
• help display how we're feeling (think, for example, of blushing or goosebumps)
• allow us to feel sensations such as touch, pressure, pain and temperature.
So, your skin is important and worth looking after.
Washing daily can help prevent disease, and really hot baths often feel lovely and can help you relax. That said, there are some potential downsides. THE SKIN MICROBIOTA
Normally we have lots of healthy organisms called Staphyloccocus epidermis on the skin. These help increase the integrity of our skin layers (they make the bonds between cells stronger) and stimulate production of anti-microbial proteins.
These little critters like an acidic environment, such as the skin's normal pH of between 4-6.
If the skin pH increases to about 7 (neutral), Staphyloccocus epidermis' nasty cousin Staphyloccocus aureus — also known as golden staph — will try to take over and cause infections.
Having a hot shower or bath can increase your skin's pH, which may ultimately benefit golden staph.
Being immersed in really hot water also pulls a lot of moisture from your dermis, and makes you lose water via sweat.
This makes your skin drier, and causes your kidneys to excrete more water, making more urine.
Staying in a hot bath for a long time can reduce your blood pressure, but increase your heart rate. People with low blood pressure or heart problems should speak to their doctor before having a long hot shower or bath.
Heat from the shower or bath can activate the release of cytokines (inflammatory molecules), histamines (which are involved in allergic reactions), and increase the number of sensory nerves. All of this can lead to itchiness after a very hot shower or bath.
Some people can get hives (itchy raised bumps that look red on lighter skin and brown or purple on darker skin) after hot showers or baths, which is a form of chronic inducible urticaria. It's fairly rare and is usually managed with antihistamines.
People with sensitive skin or chronic skin conditions such as urticaria, dermatitis, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis or acne should avoid really hot showers or baths. They dry out the skin and leave these people more prone to flare ups. MAKING THE MOST OF MOISTURISING
Moisturising after a hot bath or shower can help, but check if your moisturiser is up to the task.
To improve the skin barrier, your moisturiser needs to contain a mix of:
• an emollient such as ceramides, squalanes or dimethicone (emollients incorporate themselves into the lipid barrier in the epidermis to reduce water loss)
• a humectant such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid (humectants draw moisture from the dermis into the epidermis)
• an occlusive such as petroleum jelly or Vaseline, mineral oil, or cocoa butter (occlusives reduce water loss through the skin and increase the production of anti-microbial peptides).
Not all moisturisers are actually good at reducing the moisture loss from your skin. You still might experience dryness and itchiness as your skin recovers if you've been having a lot of really hot showers and baths.

Conversely, Vicky confessed to times when she "ate what she wanted" but was then "cruel" to herself. It comes as Vicky, 37, admits she has her reservations about people using weight loss jabs. The Geordie Shore alum says people using the jabs feels like a "step back" for body positivity. She expressed her "worries" about the contents of these jabs in an interview with The Sun, questioning: "I've seen women online losing weight on the skinny jabs and they're feeling great and have new-found confidence, and that sounds amazing for them, but do we really know what we're putting into our bodies? No. "I don't think we've got enough information about them, have we? That's what I'm always worried about. It feels like a bit of a step back." Vicky says it is an "absolute shame" that after years of "embracing the body positivity movement" people have started saying "I never wanted to be curvy actually, I always wanted to be skinny." Although the star has "no judgement" towards anyone deciding to take weight loss jabs. She added: "As someone who's spent her life struggling with noise around food and what people thought about us, being the big girl and all the rest of it, whatever makes people happy is none of my business." Currently in England and Wales, doctors have the option to prescribe weight loss injections on the NHS. Treatments such as Saxenda, Wegovy, and Mounjaro can be prescribed, with the latter requiring a specialist's involvement. Vicky, who tied the knot with Ercan Ramadan last year, shared three pictures of herself at different weights on Instagram in August. She used the post to open up about how she felt about her body. In the post, the celebrity penned: "I used to be cruel to the girl in the first photo... I let her eat what she wanted but I constantly berated her. Called her names and made her feel worthless. Just because of a number on a scale." The conversation continued as she reflected: "I was cruel to the girl in the second photo as well but in an entirely different way. I would count how many blueberries I put on my porridge, restrict my calories and weaponise exercise. That girl was a nervous wreck." Vicky acknowledged that she was "unhappy" when looking at both photos. She confessed that during those times, she combated "anxiety" and "disordered eating." Adding to her confession, she stated: "Both of these extremes didn't bring me happiness- the unhealthy practices I put my body through over the years brought me anxiety, disordered eating and low self worth. "And even though I'd like to think I've changed and I'm in a better place now- these pictures always serve as a stark reminder of what I put myself through. And what I don't want other women to put themselves through."

Thousands brave the heat to watch summer solstice sunrise
Those who gathered for the spectacle on Saturday at the neolithic monument in Wiltshire braved a warm start to the morning as they marked the year's longest day. Temperatures in Salisbury and Greater London reached 18C by 5am, according to the Met Office. The weather bureau confirmed that Yeovilton in Somerset and Crosby in Merseyside recorded the highest overnight temperatures in England, both reaching 19.7C by 6am on Saturday. Towns in Cumbria and Lancashire also recorded temperatures above 19C. An amber heat-health alert for all regions in England remains in place for the weekend. Solstice events at Stonehenge mark some of the rare occasions visitors are allowed close to the stones at the World Heritage site. English Heritage said around 25,000 people were at Stonehenge, with more than 400,000 views from around the world on the charity's livestream of the sunrise, which was greeted by the traditional drumming, chanting and cheering. People gather at Stonehenge (PA) Richard Dewdney, English Heritage's head of operations at Stonehenge, said: 'Coming together at Stonehenge for the summer solstice is a tradition that brings people from near and far, to see in the start of the longest day and celebrate the changing seasons. 'This morning was a joyous and peaceful occasion with the most beautiful sunrise. It is fantastic to see Stonehenge continuing to enchant and connect people. From sunset to sunrise, there was a fantastic atmosphere enjoyed by all, making for a truly memorable experience. 'Ensuring summer solstice at Stonehenge is a safe, enjoyable and sustainable occasion is a major operation that relies on our exceptional staff, volunteers, and the invaluable support of our partners, notably Wiltshire Council and emergency services. We look forward to welcoming people to the summer solstice again next year.' In the lead up to the event, both Stonehenge and Wiltshire Police posted social media warnings about heavy traffic and pedestrians. Stonehenge is a monument built on the alignment of the midsummer sunrise and the midwinter sunset. On the summer solstice, the sun rises behind the Heel Stone -the ancient entrance to the Stone Circle – and rays of sunlight are channelled into the centre of the monument. It is believed solstices have been celebrated at Stonehenge for thousands of years. (PA Graphics) The summer solstice takes place as one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the sun as it reaches its highest position in the sky, ensuring the longest period of daylight for the year. English Heritage curator of history Jennifer Wexler said people had been marking the solstice at the stones going back thousands of years. 'The solstice at Stonehenge is one of our most special moments,' she told an English Heritage live stream. 'It's the longest day of the year, but also the time when the sun is the highest in the sky. 'We think people were marking it here on site and gathering here for thousands of years.' The sun rises over The Shard in London (PA) The amber heat-health alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for the first time since September 2023, is in force until 9am on Monday.

Lobbyists call for speedy processing of refugees in SA
CAPE TOWN - Refugee lobby groups have highlighted the challenges refugees face when seeking safety in other countries. Marking World Refugee Day on Friday, these groups say migrants often go through lengthy processes to obtain a permit to stay in the country. The Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa (CoRMSA) believes collaboration between government departments will ensure refugees are assisted speedily. The executive director for CoRMSA, Thifulufheli Sinthumule, said, 'The refugee ACT of South Africa, it requires that if you have got a strong claim that you are fearing persecution from your home country you are able to enter the Republic of South Africa, and you are required to report to the nearest refugee reception centres across the country and we have only five refugee reception centre which is in Musina, PE, Durban and Western Cape and Pretoria.' Sinthumule said that according to the United Nations, some refugees wait up to eight years for their cases to be processed. 'As a refugee, you need to be fearing persecution from your home country in a sense that you belong to a particular political party that doesn't share the views of the ruling party, or you belong to a particular social group, like religion, that is not wanted by other particular social groups.' He added that asylum seekers and refugees encountered numerous systemic and social obstacles. 'They also face on a social level the issue of discrimination and xenophobic attacks from the local communities, especially from the anti-migrant social movement like your Operation Dudula, your Patriotic Alliance and other allied organisations who have strong positions on anti-migration.' At the moment, noted Sinthumule, there are more than 150,000 appeals for refugee status pending.. 'The Home Affairs needs to investigate your allegations or your claim to see if the reasons for you being in South Africa qualifies you to be a refugee. If your reasons deem [you] qualifying, you will then be adjudicated and be granted and given or issued with a Section 24 permit.'
