Nintendo sets new record with 3.5 million Switch 2 units sold on opening weekend

Indian Express11-06-2025

Nintendo announced Wednesday that 3.5 million Switch 2 consoles were sold worldwide during the opening weekend, selling out and surpassing its predecessor. This marks a successful debut for the Switch 2, which had been expected to perform well due to pent-up demand for Nintendo's next-generation console, released eight years after the original Switch.
The numbers released directly by Nintendo show strong consumer sentiment for the Switch 2. The Kyoto-based company says the Switch 2's sales figures marked the highest global sales for any Nintendo hardware within the first four days of release.
The Switch 2 was released last Thursday in Nintendo's major markets, including the US, where gamers lined up at midnight to buy the console. Although Nintendo's new systems often debut with groundbreaking features—like the Wii's motion controls or the DS's touch screen—the Switch 2 marks a more iterative update to the original Switch.
Released in 2017, the original Switch was wildly popular, selling 15 million units in its first year and introducing the hybrid form factor, allowing players to enjoy games both on the go and at home.
Nintendo has sold 152 million units of Switch since its debut. That makes it the third best-selling console of all time, only behind Sony's PlayStation 2 and Nintendo's DS
With the Switch 2, Nintendo hasn't changed the successful formula but has added a larger and better screen, improved performance, better Joy-Con controller and a higher price tag of $450.
The Japanese gaming giant hopes the Switch 2 will attract new users, especially those unfamiliar with Nintendo's iconic characters like Mario and Zelda. The company is betting on familiar titles such as Mario Kart World, a brand-new entry in the Mario Kart franchise, which it hopes will drive sales of the Switch 2.
Last month, Nintendo said it expects to sell 15 million units of the Switch 2 console in the fiscal year ending March 2026. However, analysts have called that estimate conservative. Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games said he is forecasting sales of 20 million units in the first year.
The success of the Switch 2 is critical for Nintendo and its broader ambition to evolve into an entertainment company akin to Disney. In recent years, Nintendo has diversified its business, expanding into theme parks and movies, though 90 percent of its revenue still comes from hardware.
Analysts expect the Switch 2 to surpass the lifetime sales of the original Switch, giving Nintendo a new high. The strong reception and fandom surrounding the Switch 2 are already being compared to the early years of the iPhone. However, US tariffs remain a major concern for Nintendo, which manufactures its consoles in Asia.

'Everyone left me alone...' Karisma Kapoor was heartbroken after her breakup with Abhishek Bachchan, the person who helped her heal was related to Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, name was... Before Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan was engaged to actress Karisma Kapoor. Their engagement was announced in 2002 at Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday celebration. Abhishek and Karisma's breakup left fans and film fraternity in shock. The real reason behind their separation has never been known. However, Karisma once spoke about the 'trauma' she underwent following her break up with Junior Bachchan. When Karisma Kapoor opened up about her 'traumatic' breakup with Abhishek Bachchan She told Subhash K Jha in an old interview that she was heartbroken, and revealed who all supported her during this traumatic phase. 'I want to thank the media for being so understanding and supportive. Everyone left me alone. I don't want to say anything more on this except that I couldn't have come out my trauma if it wasn't for my parents [Babita and Randhir Kapoor], sister [Kareena], my Dadiji [Krishna Raj Kapoor], my two Buas [Rima Jain and Ritu Nanda] and my close friends.' Karisma said. For the unversed, Ritu Nanda shared a family relation with the Bachchans. His son, Nikhil Nanda, is married to Shweta Bachchan, who is Abhishek Bachchan's sister. Remembering women lost in time

Some heirlooms glitter in the light, while others sit in old boxes and become heavier with time – not with rust, but memories. There is hidden silence in the objects that we inherit. In the exhibition 'Zaat', London-based artist and gemologist Sonakshi Chaturvedi explores these objects to unveil the stories that they have been carrying for decades. She particularly focuses on the unspoken lives of women who are usually remembered only through the relationships that they fulfill as a bride, mother and grandmother. On view at The Gallery at British Council, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, until July 31, the exhibition is part of Study UK: Creative Connections II and the British Council's Best of British cultural initiative that celebrates international alumni shaping global creative discourse. Chaturvedi's titular sculptural installation Zaat unravels matrilineal memory through the language of heirloom, metal, and meaning. Born in Agra, she completed her MA in Jewellery and Metal from the prestigious Royal College of Art in 2024. Blending traditional craft with contemporary artistic practices, the 26-year-old represents a new generation of artists who are bending the rules. Chaturvedi notes, 'Zaat began as a way to fortify my own nostalgia, but evolved into an act of reclamation — tracing heirloom objects that held the silent resistance of women remembered only as mothers, brides, grandmothers.' She wants the future female descendants to remember their ancestors not just by the roles that they played but as individuals with agency, voice and dreams. The word 'zaat' refers to identity or core sense of being. Drawing from her grandmother's wedding trousseau, Chaturvedi has crafted sculptures that use brass, white metal, cold enamel, resin-based enamel and gemstones to archive her matrilineal memory. 'At first glance, these forms appear worn, metallic and subdued – echoing the weight of tradition and domestic expectation. But within, they burst into psychedelic interiors – revealing a hidden world of colour, desire and youth,' says Chaturvedi. She notes that the dual surfaces are not an aesthetic coincidence; they mirror the lives many women have lived – outwardly dutiful, inwardly wild with colour and desire. Every artefact in the exhibition holds fond memories for the artist. Shareefa Jar, for instance, is a brass replica of her grandmother's plastic jar in which she saved spare change. 'She would let me borrow the money to buy us both kulfis, candies, and custard apples during summer afternoons, when everyone else was asleep after lunch,' shares Chaturvedi. Recalling another fond memory, which is the inspiration behind The Pyaaz Tiffin – brass replica of a traditional Indian tiffin carrier – she shares, 'During vacations, when I stayed with my grandparents, despite her religious and cultural beliefs, she used to chop onions for me to enjoy my meals. It showed her efforts to bridge the gap and keep us connected.' This is represented by the intertwined knot form of brooches in gold-plated white metal and cold enamel. Similarly, other artefacts, including The Anaar Vase, Shahtoot Dispenser and Pyaaz Cooker are inspired by artefacts that were once in her grandmother's possession. Ultimately, 'Zaat' is a conversation – one that moves across generations, surfaces and silences.

IT's Europe deal momentum is up after three slow quarters

Agencies Representative Image As the largest technology outsourcing market — the US — navigates through the trade and policy uncertainties, deal activity has seen increased traction from Europe after three slow industry analysts have seen an approximately 5% rise in European deals from the previous quarter even as the US market remained flat at 2% growth, as per US-based research firm HFS Group. Publicly India's largest IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) alone signed at least six deals in Europe since March — telecom tower operator Vantage Towers, France's Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris, Netherlands-based multi-service utility provider Hanab, Council of Europe Development Bank, Denmark-based retailer Salling Group, and UK-based airline Virgin Atlantic. Second largest company Infosys partnered with Allied Irish Banks, UK's Yorkshire Building Society while immediate rival HCLTech bagged an engineering services deal with Swedish truck maker Volvo. Smaller peers L&T Technology Services and Tata Elxsi signed a €50 million deal each with undisclosed European auto manufacturers. Even as Wipro has indicated a softer outlook in Europe, it appointed a new CEO for its European strategic unit. This, at a time when the US corporates are pausing or cancelling existing projects, amid rising cost pressures due to the tariff impact weighing on them along with the constant change in the trade policies. 'We are seeing some gradual pick-up in the UK, Benelux, and Germany after three very slow quarters in Europe. Some enterprises are openly talking about transformation to better align with the uncertain trade environment and address legacy issues like cloud migration and cybersecurity,' said Phil Fersht, founder and chief analyst at advisory firm HFS Group. After a slowness of 17 deals signed in Europe from October to December 2024, the momentum picked up to 30 in January to March quarter 2025, as shown by BNP Paribas data based on publicly available key large deals. In April and May, 14 deals were signed without accounting for the month of June. In comparison, deal signings in US stood at 11 and 12 in December and March quarter, respectively while April and May saw five deals. As per data services platform ISG, Europe saw the value of deals jump to $4.08 billion January to March 2025, up from $3.4 billion in December quarter and $3.5 billion in January to March Jain, founder and CEO of India-based IT research firm EIIR Trend, highlighted that, European auto companies, which signed three deals in the whole of 2024, have signed at least five deals so far this year, with still half a year to go. 'The reason is that European auto companies want to reduce costs while investing in SDVs (software defined vehicles). They need external support from engineering service providers at competitive prices. So, they are looking at Indian engineering service providers.'They are making faster decisions compared to US auto companies, which are struggling with greater uncertainty and lack of policy clarity, Jain the pandemic, the Indian outsourcing leaders have also been increasing their acquisitions to nearly a dozen in Europe, where the pace of revenue expansion has dented growth owing to business companies such as TCS, KPIT Technologies also opened technology and delivery centres in European countries to accelerate the offerings in the region.'The supply chain and competitive pressures will help Indian companies take more share,' said KPIT Technologies MD and CEO Kishor to experts, cost optimisation opportunities in Europe especially in auto, manufacturing and BFSI are likely to see uptick in the ongoing fiscal year 2026. In a post-results conference in April, Infosys CEO Salil Parekh said the company has made several investments and scaled up in different geographies in Europe. 'So that is a good market for us. With the changes in the environment, we will sort of see what develops.' Its chief financial officer said Europe grew 3x of the company rate at 15% in constant currency terms driven by our focused approach of client mining, ramp-up of large deals and acquisitions. Besides Europe, other regions which showed growth, according to Fersht, are Middle East at around 5% with a smaller base. Meanwhile, Asia Pacific witnessed a decline of around 1-2%.The US contributes around 40-50% of the revenues for Indian IT majors, followed by Europe constituting about 20-30% of the more-than-$280 billion market of software services exported by India. For the January to March quarter, Europe's revenues at top eight firms continued to outgrow American region with a growth of 2.8% year-on-year and 1% sequentially as compared to Americas degrowth at (-0.1)% YoY and (-2.1)% sequentially, as per a recent Kotak Institutional Equities report.
