Chhattisgarh: HM Shah lays foundation stone for NFSU campus, state forensic lab

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) campus in Naya Raipur, marking a significant step in strengthening the criminal justice infrastructure in Chhattisgarh. The Rs 350 crore project, to be built over 40 acres, is part of the Centre's broader strategy to enhance scientific investigation and law enforcement capabilities across India. State Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai shared a short video of his visit on his X handle. The campus in Raipur is expected to offer advanced training, research, and education in forensic sciences, catering not only to Chhattisgarh but to neighbouring states as well. Alongside the NFSU ceremony, HM Shah also performed bhoomi-pujan for a state-run forensic laboratory, which will serve as a vital support system for law enforcement agencies in the region. These developments are part of the Centre's commitment to integrating science and technology into policing, and ensuring faster, more accurate investigations and convictions. Later in the day, the Home Minister chaired a high-level meeting with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and top officials of police from Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states to review ongoing anti-Naxal operations. The meeting touched upon coordinated actions between central forces and state police, the surrender policy, and rehabilitation strategies in affected districts. On occasion, HM Shah has reiterated his earlier deadline—March 31, 2026—for the complete eradication of Naxalism from India, underlining the importance of intelligence-driven, forensic-led policing in achieving this goal. On Monday, the Home Minister is expected to visit Narayanpur district, where he will interact with BSF (Border Security Force) personnel and villagers in the remote Abujhmad region. HM Shah is set to visit Irkbhatti, a remote region in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district, on Monday, where he is expected to spend nearly three hours engaging with local communities and security personnel. During his visit, the Home Minister will hold direct interactions with members of the Abujhmariya tribal community to gain first-hand insights into the implementation of the state's flagship welfare initiative, the 'Niyad Nella Narayan Yojana.' He will also distribute educational materials to local children as part of the government's outreach to underserved populations in insurgency-affected areas. In a gesture of appreciation, the Home Minister will meet with the security personnel involved in the operation that led to the neutralisation of Naxal commander Basavaraju. Since the BJP government took office in Chhattisgarh, over 427 Maoists have been killed in joint operations, with authorities stressing that development and modern policing go hand in hand.

What Karnataka's new crowd control bill proposes

Facing flak over the handling of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations, which resulted in the death of 11 cricket fans in a stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy stadium on June 4, the Karnataka government has proposed a new legislation to manage crowds at events. The Karnataka Crowd Control (Managing Crowd at Events and Venues of Mass Gathering) Bill 2025 looks to 'effectively manage and control crowds at sponsored events and venues of mass gathering' such as political rallies, conferences and other events. It excludes 'jatra, rathotsava, pallakki utsava, teppada teru, urus, or any religious event pertaining to any religion, caste or creed'.Discussed in a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on June 19 and slated to come up for approval in the next cabinet meeting, the draft bill lays down guidelines on standard operating procedures for managing crowds, including protocols for dealing with emergencies as well as provisions for reserved seating, security systems, access control and advanced check-in solutions to prevent bottlenecks while ensuring smooth crowd flow. 'There shall be independent audits of every venue's capacity, entry/exit routes, emergency evacuation options and communication systems,' reads the draft. 'Venues that don't comply with safety standards should not be allowed to host high footfall events.' In case of emergency, the jurisdictional police station may postpone or cancel the event, or change its by event planners shall be punished with 'imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with fine up to Rs 5 lakh'. A day after the incident, representatives of RCB and an event management company were placed under arrest. Meanwhile, even as a separate probe by the district magistrate is underway, the government instituted an inquiry under retired judge Justice John Michael The Congress government also came under attack from opposition parties, which took out protests holding the government responsible for the tragedy and demanded the CM's to India Today Magazine

Karnataka minister HK Patil pulls up own government over illegal mining cases

Karnataka Law Minister HK Patil has written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urging him to punish those guilty of illegal mining in the state, alleging that the government has not been honest and committed to ensuring proper punishment for those guilty of "looting the state's wealth".In order to bring the culprits behind illegal mining to justice, Patil also suggested steps that the Siddaramaiah government should take, according to a seven-page letter to the Chief Minister, Patil claimed that only 7.6 per cent of all illegal mining cases have been investigated and that the government has not done enough to punish the culprits and recover the lost wealth. "Between 2007 and 2011, massive treachery took place in Karnataka in the form of illegal mining. Politicians and bureaucrats systematically looted the state's wealth. The government lost Rs 1.5 lakh crore. But in spite of such a large-scale loot, the government has not demonstrated honesty and commitment in ensuring commensurate punishment for the loot and recovery of the state's wealth," Patil said in the said that there is public outrage over illegal mining in the state and the administration's inability to address most of such cases."There is outrage among people about this. A special investigation team (SIT), which is looking into a few cases, has not made progress. These cases are getting buried in government files and administrative delays," he also suggested steps that can be taken to effectively address illegal mining and their investigation:Through the Criminal Law Amendment Ordinance of 1946, a Recovery Commissioner should be immediately appointed within the jurisdiction of the State Government to seize the property of criminals accused of recovery efforts. This Commissioner must be provided with the necessary support and strength. Steps must be taken with firm determination to make recovery to the number of illegal mining cases that have completed investigation and are now in the trial phase in court, there are at least ten times more cases that have not yet undergone investigation. Investigations into such cases are essential. For that purpose, a special investigation team with stronger enforcement authority should be formed, and the police system should be structured accordingly, enabling the punishment of criminals involved in such crimes.A special court must be immediately established to investigate the cases with criminal intent related to illegal Karnataka Law Minister further called for administrators to recognise the seriousness of the matter, saying, "The serious directives already given, and the documentary evidence submitted to the then-Cabinet subcommittee, must be preserved, and a final decision must be made before they disappear for any reason".advertisementThe state minister's scathing letter came more than a month after a CBI court convicted former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and three others in the Obulapuram illegal mining case. The matter concerned the investigation into the case involving the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC), owned by OMC case involved allegations of illegal iron ore mining and export in the Bellary region of Karnataka and the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. Investigations revealed that OMC had obtained mining leases under the guise of captive mining but had engaged in unauthorised mining Watch IN THIS STORY#Karnataka
