Car crash in north Charlotte claims life of 19-year-old
A fatal car crash occurred at 1:55 a.m. Friday on Sunset Road in north Charlotte, resulting in the death of 19-year-old Jason Torres-Celis.
1 dead after crash in north Charlotte, CMPD says
The crash involved a black Infinity G35 driven by Celis, who was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle collided with a Freightliner tractor-trailer, causing significant damage to both vehicles.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit, along with the DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search, is conducting an investigation into the crash.
Preliminary findings suggest that Mr. Celis was traveling at a high rate of speed northeast on Sunset Road when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center median, and collided with the tractor-trailer traveling in the opposite direction.
It was noted that Mr. Celis was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.
The investigation is ongoing, and it is not yet known if impairment was a factor, as toxicology results are pending.

Grand Ronde motorcyclist dies in crash with semitruck on Highway 18
A 50-year-old Grand Ronde man driving a motorcycle died June 15 in a crash with a semitruck on Highway 18, according to Oregon State Police. Police responded to the crash at about 7:07 p.m. on Highway 18 near Grand Ronde, according to a news release. Responding officers found an eastbound Freightliner semitruck driven by a 19-year-old from Salem turned left into a gravel lot and entered the path of a westbound Kawasaki ZX-18 motorcycle, the release said. The motorcycle, operated by Joseph Nicholas Grammer, collided with the semitruck. Grammer was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. The driver of the semitruck was uninjured. The highway was impacted for about three hours while police investigated. The crash remains under investigation. Family sues CMPD, claims Jovontay Williams died from restraint-induced homicide
The family of a man who died in custody is now suing the city of Charlotte and four officers who were involved. They called the death of Jovontay Williams preventable, restraint-induced homicide. Body camera video shows they found Williams acting erratically on the porch and put him in handcuffs on the ground. It took 19 minutes for an ambulance to arrive. In the lawsuit, the Williams family said he repeatedly told officers he could not breathe, but they made no effort to reposition him or relieve pressure from his back. According to the suit, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department policy explicitly prohibits this kind of restraint. It said an independent autopsy commissioned by the family confirmed that Williams died from restraint asphyxia while in police custody.
