Chase Briscoe holds off Denny Hamlin to win at Pocono Raceway on fuel mileage
With sublime fuel conservation, Chase Briscoe held off Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin to win at Pocono Raceway and lock into the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.
Briscoe made his final pit stop on Lap 119 of 160 and stretched the fuel tank of his No. 19 Toyota to a 0.682-second victory despite concern by crew chief James Small that the fuel fill was too short.
It's the third career victory in NASCAR's premier series for Briscoe but his first since joining JGR this season.
'To finally deliver a win is just an awesome feeling,' Briscoe told Marty Snider on Prime.
Hamlin, who pitted a lap later and stopped longer to have more fuel, finished second on the 2.5-mile track in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, followed by Ryan Blaney, Chris Buescher and Chase Elliott.
Joe Hunter Nemechek, Kyle Larson, Ryan Preece, Brad Keselowski and Austin Cindric rounded out the top 10 as the 400-mile race finished on a 30-lap run under green.
It was a rough day for 23XI Racing, which occupied the last two places in the finishing order because of brake problems for Bubba Wallace (36th) and Riley Herbst (37th). Both drivers hit the wall after suffering tire problems related to the brakes.
Wallace was able to drive his No. 23 Toyota to the garage and then made a brisk walk to the care center after exiting. His playoff hopes took a major hit after he entered Pocono just above the cutline with 10 races remaining in the regular season.
Teammate Tyler Reddick also encountered mechanical problems before the end of Stage 2, falling three laps down and outside the top 30 for repairs.
Stage 1 winner: Hamlin
Stage 2 winner: Briscoe

Kyle Busch Clears the Air After Dale Jr. ‘Shade' Sparks Fan Backlash
Kyle Busch Clears the Air After Dale Jr. 'Shade' Sparks Fan Backlash originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kyle Busch is known for not sugarcoating what's on his mind. Throughout his career, that's often included taking aim at his fellow competitors or the sanctioning body. Advertisement On Saturday at Pocono Raceway, the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion met with reporters and didn't mince words when asked for his thoughts on Dale Earnhardt Jr. serving as a substitute crew chief for Connor Zilisch in the Xfinity Series race, replacing Mardy Lindley, who was serving a one-race suspension for loose lug nuts in the Nashville race two weeks earlier. 'It's all publicity, but spin it how you want it,' Busch said. 'He's just gonna be a warm body sitting on top of the box. They've got enough stuff from the shop and enough technology these days of being able to have the crew chief still involved. Kyle Busch during practice at Pocono Raceway.'I could say I could do the same thing with one of my Truck teams, but the guys at the shop would be the ones handling it. But still great, cool, eyeballs and putting some attention on their team and stuff like that.' Advertisement Unsurprisingly, many online viewed Busch's remarks as throwing shade at Earnhardt. The Richard Childress Racing driver saw his remarks on X, the resulting fan reaction and replied to his interview. 'This has nothing to do w any animosity towards Dale jr.,' he clarified. 'I'm referencing how silly the suspensions for cc are these days w all the technology they have to stay in contact w their teams. I'd say the same thing if JG went on a HMS box as a cc.' Kyle Busch remembers Richmond 2008. NASCAR drivers taken back by wild fan reception at New York's Fanatics Fest
Some of NASCAR's biggest stars were among the high-profile celebrities at Fanatics Fest on Friday in New York. The Big Apple is not exactly a hotbed for auto racing - especially when most of the loudest crowds popped for Derek Jeter, Eli Manning and other New York legends throughout the weekend. However, three of the sport's biggest stars were flabbergasted by the reactions they got from some of the fans in attendance. "I didn't really, honestly, know what I was coming to. So to have people recognize me here is pretty cool," Kyle Larson told Fox News Digital at the event. NASCAR Cup leader William Byron added that he was "surprised" by all the love he got at Javits Center in Manhattan. "I am surprised, man. There were quite a few 24 fans here in the crowd. It's pretty cool, man. We're down the road this weekend at Pocono, looking forward to it, and it's fun being out here and seeing cool people." Denny Hamlin is competing in the Fanatics Games, where fans are going up against pro athletes, including Tom Brady, to win $1 million. Maybe his crowd is a bit different, considering he is going up against Brady, Rob Gronkowski and other stars. At the very least, however, he is not taking it for granted that he is being recognized throughout the event. "It's been overwhelming. Just all the different booths, bringing other sports together, it's just fantastic to see. And having the opportunity to size myself up with other athletes," Hamlin said. "We don't have a huge presence up in this area, but still, you see a lot of NASCAR racing shirts, and when you get autograph requests, it's like, OK, they do recognize you, even in this area." Other celebrities in attendance on Friday included Caleb Williams, Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Logan Paul, Michael Strahan, Travis Scott and Livvy Dunne. LeBron James, Victor Wembanyana and numerous others made their rounds the rest of the weekend. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
