Man arrested at airport in attempt to smuggle drug
MIRI: Police foiled an attempt by a local man to smuggle drugs with the seizure of the contraband, believed to be methamphetamine weighing 10.5kg, in a raid at the Arrival Hall of the Miri Airport last Tuesday.
District police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, in a statement posted on the Miri District Police Facebook page, said the 20-year-old suspect, who is an unemployed man from the interior of Sarawak, was arrested immediately after claiming a box at the baggage claim area.
"Further inspection of the box found it contained 10 packages of drugs suspected to be Methamphetamine (syabu) hidden under a layer of snack food packages," he said.
He said the police also seized 120 vape pods containing a liquid believed to be Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), weighing approximately 986 grams.
The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM380,000.
Mohd Farhan said preliminary investigations found that the suspect has travelled to Kuala Lumpur to collect the package before returning to Miri.
The case is investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, whipping of not less than 12 strokes to the offender.
Mohd Farhan also reminded the public, especially youths, to be wary of lucrative job offers circulating on social media as they may be traps set by syndicates to recruit unsuspecting individuals as drug mules.

Insurance agent and retiree lose RM2.35mil to online scams
GEORGE TOWN: Two people, including an elderly man, suffered losses totalling RM2.35mil after falling victim to online investment scams in separate incidents in Penang. State police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in the first case, the Commercial Crime Investigation division of the Seberang Perai Tengah district police headquarters received a complaint from a 57-year-old local man on Saturday after he lost almost RM1.5mil. 'According to the insurance agent, he saw a stock investment advertisement promising high returns on Facebook in December. 'The victim then contacted a female suspect via WhatsApp. 'The investment offered various packages with promises of lucrative returns. 'The victim downloaded the stock investment application and on Dec 30, made the first transfer of RM9,999. He earned a profit of RM18,400,' Comm Hamzah said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported. He said the victim's confidence grew in the investment and he subsequently made 35 fund transfers between Feb 17 and April 24 into seven bank accounts belonging to different companies totalling RM1,495,176. Comm Hamzah said the man only realised he had been a victim of fraud after failing to withdraw profits from the investment app and was even asked to make an additional payment. In the second case, he said a 73-year-old retired accountant at a factory filed a police report at the George Town district police headquarters on Saturday after falling victim to an online investment scam involving a loss of RM855,001. 'According to the victim, he saw an advertisement on cryptocurrency investment that offered high profits in a short period of time on Facebook in March. 'The elderly person clicked on the advertisement link before contacting a female suspect via WhatsApp,' he said. Comm Hamzah said the victim downloaded the investment application before making 14 transactions to five bank accounts belonging to different companies from April 15 to June 11, but did not receive any profits. He added that investigations were being carried out to trace the fraud syndicate. Both cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Investment scam ring busted, 10 nabbed in Puchong raid
SERDANG: An investment scam syndicate has been busted in a raid on a call centre in Bandar Puteri Puchong. A total of 10 suspects, seven men and three women, were arrested during the operation. Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the raid was conducted at about 2.30pm on Friday (June 20). "We detained the suspects, aged between 30 and 40, including the ringleader. "So far, four victims have come forward with almost RM400,000 in losses," he told a press conference at Serdang district police headquarters on Monday (June 23). Various items worth RM45,000 were seized, including six laptops, 14 mobile phones, a modem and three monitors, he added. "The syndicate used online platforms to mimic foreign exchange schemes to dupe victims. "We believe they have been operating for about six months," he said. ACP Farid said the syndicate targeted mostly locals. "However, there are victims from Indonesia and India. "The syndicate would promise high returns within a short time to entice its targets," he said. He advised anyone planning to invest in a scheme to verify its authenticity with the Securities Commission first. "It is unfortunate that some people were duped by the promise of huge returns within a short time (and) failed to check the legitimacy of the scheme," he said. The suspects were remanded for one day Saturday (June 21) but were rearrested by Ampang Jaya police for a similar scheme in that district, he added. COMP COURTS CRIME
