Land Rover unveils new Discovery Tempest and Gemini editions

TimesLIVE15-05-2025

Land Rover has unveiled its new Discovery Tempest and Gemini editions, created to honour the popular SUV's 35-year legacy.
Described by the brand as the 'most luxurious, comfortable and highly specified Discovery produced', the Tempest takes its name from the secret development programme for the second-generation Discovery launched in 1998.
It's offered in three body colours — Charente Grey, Varesine Blue or Carpathian Grey — and comes standard with a matte protective film to help reduce bush-rash when exploring off-road trails.
Adding contrast is a Petra Copper Gloss roof finish, though customers can opt for a Narvik Gloss Black roof instead. Petra Copper Gloss is also used to accent various exterior elements, including the wing vent, Discovery script and lower bumper inserts.
The Tempest rides on 22" Diamond Turned Style 5124 alloy wheels, featuring a Petra Copper-tinted lacquer with Gloss Black detailing. Unique badging on the B-pillars, treadplates, puddle lamps and interior trim help set it apart. Inside, you'll find Shadow Aluminium detailing and premium Ebony Windsor leather upholstery.
Billed as a 'modern tribute to Discovery's ingenious design and engineering', the Gemini edition references the code name for the Tdi diesel engine that powered the original Discovery in 1989.
It's available in six colours, including Sedona Red, and features a Narvik Gloss Black contrast roof which also extends to the lower body cladding and front wing vents. The front grille surround and Discovery script are finished in Atlas Gloss for added distinction.
Further visual cues include Gemini-specific graphics on the B-pillar badges, treadplates and interior finishers.
Standard wheels are 21" split-seven-spoke Style 7001 alloys in Diamond Turned Silver.
Designed with family adventures in mind, the Gemini's cabin comes equipped with a range of practical features: a cooler compartment between the front seats, Click & Go media holders for rear passengers and three-zone climate control.

Both editions are powered by Land Rover's 3.0 l six-cylinder Ingenium D350 turbodiesel engine, paired with 48V mild-hybrid technology. Meshed to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a sophisticated all-wheel drive system, the powertrain delivers 257kW and 700Nm of torque.
With a towing capacity of 3,500kg the Discovery is also equipped with All Terrain Progress Control, Terrain Response 2 and can wade through water up to 900mm deep.
The Discovery Tempest is priced from R2,326,200, while the Gemini starts at R2,038,800.

New Land Rover Defender 110 Trophy Edition honours adventures past

Land Rover is paying tribute to the iconic Camel Trophy cars of decades past with the launch of the new Defender 110 Trophy Edition. Though the British marque has stubbed out all reference to RJ Reynolds' greatest export, it's reigniting nostalgia through the use of Deep Sandglow Yellow paint: a modern day take of the distinctive hue that coloured all the vehicles that took part in the competition from 1980 until its eventual demise in 2000. A second shade, Keswick Green, is also available. No matter which you pick, both get a contrasting gloss black finish applied to the bonnet, lower body side, brake calipers and rear recovery eyes. Optional matte protective film is available to fend off bush rash. Other features include gloss black 20-inch alloy wheels shod with all‑terrain tyres, a dark rear scuff plate, gloss black wheel arch guards and a black front undershield. Trophy decals and badging adorn the bonnet, C-pillar and tailgate. Those rugged, khaki-wearing Camel Men of the 1980s and 1990s, however, might scoff at the illuminated Trophy treadplates and Ebony Windsor leather seats. Ditto the exposed cross car beam that wears laser‑etched endcaps with Trophy branding. Though they would probably be quite approving of the range of optional accessories that include an expedition roof rack, roof ladder, front/rear mud flaps, raised air intake for better dust filtration and side-mounted gear carrier providing space for muddy, wet or sandy items. Or, just maybe, a cheeky carton of ciggies to complement those pensive stares across the windswept badlands they've just tackled. Cue the Ennio Morricone... The new Land Rover Defender 110 Trophy Edition is now available to order in the UK and priced from £89,810 (R2,174,777). Local availability is yet to be confirmed.

Land Rover has given its Discovery Sport line-up a refresh for 2025 with updated styling, enhanced technology and new model grades starting with the entry-level Dynamic S. The most accessible Discovery Sport offering benefits from a racier exterior defined by a gloss black finish applied to its radiator grille, wheel arches, lower bumpers and front claw detailing. This attractive hue is also used on the lower body sides and Discovery script. The cabin has been spruced up, with a digital instrument cluster and steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles as standard, while the centre console is home to an 11.4" curved glass touchscreen running the latest Pivi Pro infotainment system. Smartphone integration has been boosted with the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Next up is the new Landmark derivative that replaces the outgoing Dynamic SE model. This mid-tier offering celebrates Discovery's rich history and is identified by the mountain range logo first seen on the original Discovery launched in 1989. This motif not only appears on the aluminium treadplates but is also projected onto the ground by the vehicle's puddle lights integrated into the underside of the door mirrors. The cabin boasts second row seats with slide/recline functionality, a panoramic glass sunroof, functional roof rails and a surround view camera for easier manoeuvring. The flagship Discovery Sport Metropolitan replaces the Dynamic HSE and differentiates itself with Atlas Silver Discovery script on its bonnet and tailgate, Indus Silver front/rear undershields and a radiator grille with a distinctive silver foil insert. Other highlights are Metropolitan branded treadplates and new 20" Diamond Turned alloy wheels. Inside, the Metropolitan features Windsor Leather with 14-way electrically adjustable heated and cooled seats, a 650W 14-speaker Meridian Surround Sound System, a digital Clearsight rear-view mirror and a Cabin Air Purification Plus climate control system. Discovery Sport owners are also able to tick the box on three new accessory packs. The Beach Days pack adds a centre armrest cooler, tailored sunshades and a collapsible organiser for the load area. The Road Trip pack includes Click & Go media holders for rear seat occupants, while cross bars and a roof box add luggage capacity for long-haul trips. The Snow Days pack splices in a set of rubber floor mats, a unique snow-biased traction control setting and a ski/snowboard carrier that mounts on the SUV's roof rails. The all-wheel drive Discovery Sport continues to offer a range of efficient plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid powertrain options. The former offers a maximum electric driving range of up to 61km and can via DC rapid charging achieve 0-80% charge in about 30 minutes. Ingenium petrols and diesels complete the line-up. Across both fuel types, advanced mild hybrid electric technology provides smooth operation of the start-stop function for composed urban driving, with the 48V system boosting performance and economy. The new Discovery Sport range is available to order priced from R1,362,900.
