Shareholders in Avantium (AMS:AVTX) are in the red if they invested five years ago

Long term investing is the way to go, but that doesn't mean you should hold every stock forever. It hits us in the gut when we see fellow investors suffer a loss. For example, we sympathize with anyone who was caught holding Avantium N.V. (AMS:AVTX) during the five years that saw its share price drop a whopping 81%. And we doubt long term believers are the only worried holders, since the stock price has declined 51% over the last twelve months. Furthermore, it's down 17% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.
Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns.
This technology could replace computers: discover the 20 stocks are working to make quantum computing a reality.
Because Avantium made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
Over five years, Avantium grew its revenue at 16% per year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. So it's not at all clear to us why the share price sunk 13% throughout that time. You'd have to assume the market is worried that profits won't come soon enough. While there might be an opportunity here, you'd want to take a close look at the balance sheet strength.
The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. If you are thinking of buying or selling Avantium stock, you should check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
We've already covered Avantium's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. We note that Avantium's TSR, at -74% is higher than its share price return of -81%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.
While the broader market lost about 7.7% in the twelve months, Avantium shareholders did even worse, losing 51%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 12% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Avantium better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Avantium (of which 2 don't sit too well with us!) you should know about.

L stock has risen 1.6% over the past three months, lagging behind the Nasdaq Composite's ($NASX) 11.7% increase over the same time frame. Moreover, shares of Loews have gained 15.9% over the past 52 weeks, compared to NASX's 9.4% return over the same time frame. Despite a few fluctuations, the stock has been trading mostly above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages since last year. Shares of Loews fell 1.8% on May 5 due to a decline in Q1 2025 profit, driven largely by $97 million in catastrophe losses at its insurance unit CNA Financial, including $53 million tied to the devastating California wildfires. The company's investment income also dropped to $608 million, and net income attributable to Loews fell to $1.74 per share. In contrast, rival The Progressive Corporation (PGR) has outperformed Loews stock. PGR stock has soared 23.5% and 8.7% on a YTD basis. Despite the stock's outperformance relative to the Nasdaq over the past year, analysts remain cautiously optimistic on Loews. The stock has a consensus rating of 'Moderate Buy' from one analyst in coverage, and as of writing, L is trading below the mean price target of $217. Accenture's Q3 EPS, Revenue Surpass Estimates

Accenture (NYSE:ACN) beats Q3 estimates as GAAP EPS rises to $3.49, driven by strong consulting demand. Revenue climbed 7.5% year-over-year to $17.7 billion, topping consensus by $380 million, while new bookings totaled $19.7 billion, down 6% in U.S. dollars and 7% in local currency. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 4 Warning Sign with ACN. Generative AI engagements accounted for $1.5 billion of that backlog, signaling sustained appetite for digital transformation projects. Accenture returned cash to shareholders with a 15% dividend hike to $1.48 per share and repurchased or redeemed 6 million shares for $1.8 billion. Looking ahead, the company raised its full-year targets: revenue growth of 6%7% in local currency, a modest 0.2% tailwind from foreign-exchange, and operating margin expansion to 15.6%, up 10 basis points on an adjusted basis. Diluted EPS is now expected between $12.77 and $12.89, while free cash flow guidance was lifted to $9.0 billion$9.7 billion. Why it matters: Investors should note Accenture's balanced growth across legacy and AI services, bolstered by robust cash returns and a raised outlook that underscores confidence in demand resilience. That chart shows Wall Street's 12-month ACN targets sitting at an average of $355, about 16% above today's levels, with bullish bulls eyeing as high as $395 and skeptics at $290. Despite the upbeat outlook, Accenture's shares are actually down double-digits year-to-date, weighed by broader tech sell-offs and profit-taking after last winter's rally. The divergence between the low and high cases highlights how much of the upside hinges on AI spending and macro stability. If consulting budgets hold firm, you could see ACN grind toward those $355$395 marks; if belt-tightening returns, it might test sub-$300 territory again. This article first appeared on GuruFocus.
