Collector reviews monsoon preparedness in TN's Cuddalore district

CUDDALORE: A review meeting to assess preparedness for the 2025 southwest monsoon was held at the collectorate conference hall under the chairmanship of Collector Sibi Adhithya Senthil Kumar.
The Collector said, "As the Southwest Monsoon is set to begin, Village Administrative Officers must identify low-lying areas prone to water stagnation and issue public advisories. Details of first informants on waterlogging should be recorded. Around 5,000 first responders will be positioned at the revenue village and taluk levels, and 800 at the district level."
He instructed, "Zonal Officers and Tahsildars should jointly identify vulnerable areas and take preventive measures. VAOs, village assistants, assistant agricultural officers, village health nurses, and voluntary organisations must coordinate with village-level committees for flood relief."
The collector added, "In flood-prone areas, people must be relocated to safe shelters and provided with essentials. Relief materials should be kept ready and special care must be given to the elderly and persons with disabilities."
He further said, "Waterbodies must be inspected and embankments strengthened. Sluice gates must be repaired. Equipment such as tree-cutting machines, JCBs, flashlights, water pumps, and bleaching powder should be stocked. Fire and health personnel must raise public awareness. Water tanks must be cleaned and chlorinated. Sewage contamination must be prevented. Disinfectants should be sprayed in stagnant areas."

Collector Sibi Adhithya Senthil Kumar has directed quarry and crusher unit owners to obtain permission from the Department of Geology and Mines for storage and transportation of M-sand and gravel. As per the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Illegal Mining Transportation and Storage of Minerals and Mineral Dealers Rules, 2011, quarry and crusher units required appropriate permission from the district administration for storing M-sand and gravel and also for transporting them. Further, as the transit pass system for transporting M-sand and gravel comes into effect from June 12, quarry and crusher units have been instructed to furnish the required details on . Following registration, a free transit pass would be issued which could be used for transporting M-sand and gravel materials. For further details, applicants can contact the Department of Geology and Mining office on the Collectorate premises.

The weather is expected to be hot and humid, creating uncomfortable conditions. For Wednesday and Thursday, similar weather is anticipated, with light to moderate rains or thundershowers expected in some areas. Thunderstorms may occur, featuring lightning and strong gusty winds of 30-40 km per hour, alongside persistently hot and humid conditions. On Tuesday, light to moderate rains or showers are expected at a few places in Rayalaseema again with strong gusty winds of 30-40 km per hour. On both Wednesday and Thursday, light to moderate rains or thundershowers are forecast to occur at isolated locations, with thunderstorms producing lightning and strong winds. Residents of the affected areas are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions during this period of unsettled weather.
