On Yoga Day, Madhya Pradesh Ministers Perform 'Asanas', Schemes Lose Breath
While ministers in Madhya Pradesh were seen performing yoga with poise and discipline on International Yoga Day on Saturday, the state's yoga initiatives appear to have lost their footing. Despite forming a Yoga Commission three years ago and setting up over 350 committees, the picture on the ground suggests the scheme itself has gone into a deep meditative state, from which it is yet to emerge.
The Yoga Commission in Madhya Pradesh was launched with the promise of building a state-wide network to promote wellness and preventive health. The government says district and block-level committees were formed - 52 in districts and 313 in development blocks - extending from urban wards to rural panchayats. Yet, when NDTV tried locating functioning yoga centres, the trail led mostly to locked doors and abandoned or repurposed halls.
'Instructors Missing'
Nowhere is the picture more striking than in Bhopal - a city that inhaled death during the 1984 gas tragedy. A decade ago, the government allocated Rs 4 crore to build yoga centres specifically for gas victims suffering from respiratory ailments, because nearly 60% of survivors still suffer from chronic lung conditions
"The announcement sounds good, but there is no implementation. Yoga is missing, instructors are missing and, in some cases, even the centres are missing," said Rachna Dhingra, a social worker working with Bhopal gas victims. "Some of these centres have turned into wedding venues or municipal event halls," she rued.
Initially, the state government promised a yoga centre in every municipal ward in Bhopal with a budget of Rs 3.68 crore for 36 centres. That plan was then trimmed to just one centre per zone; and only seven were constructed.
"On Yoga Day, they (the BJP government in the state) call the media and click photos. But there's no real intent to promote yoga," said Shailendra Patel, a Congress leader. "The centres for gas victims are shut. The Commission has no budget. It's only about publicity."
The official website of the MP Yoga Commission - www.mpyogaayog.in - also refuses to load. Instead of helping users locate nearby yoga centres or classes, the page offers a different kind of spiritual experience: a blank screen.
Government's Take
"The system should be made accountable. Whether it's the Yoga Commission or the education department, all must work together. Rest assured, everything will be fine," said Transport and School Education Minister Rao Uday Pratap Singh.
BJP MLA Bhagwan Das Sabnani, however, offered a unique defence for the situation: "What do you need money for in yoga? Just spread a mat and start. Yoga needs minimal equipment."

BMC squads destroy 50kg stale food in eateries
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: Food inspection squads of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday destroyed 50 kg of stale and contaminated food during checking of several hotels and restaurants in the city. The drive was carried out in view of jaundice and diarrhoea cases being reported from several areas. The inspection was carried out at Chandrasekharpur and IRC Village, from where multiple samples were taken for laboratory testing. Some food items, which had gone stale and were stored in unhygienic conditions were destroyed. "The surprise food quality inspection has been on since diarrhoea cases were reported in the city and it will continue. On Saturday, a penalty of Rs 8,000 was imposed on three hotels. They were warned not to serve stale food. If the hotels repeat the practice of serving stale food, they will be slapped with closure notices along with a penalty," said designated food safety officer Satyajit Patel. Earlier, the inspection teams checked eateries at Unit I, Unit II, Rasulgarh and Palasuni areas. "We want to ensure that the vendors don't keep stale food for the next day. The usual practice is leftover food on a given day (till night) is kept to be mixed up with freshly cooked food. This makes them unhygienic," Patel added. Food safety squads said fast food items and some local delicacies are mostly dumped at the source itself. "So far bacterial contamination has been detected in three food samples. Now, we will randomly check panipuri (gupchup) and dahi bara-aludam stalls to find out if the water they use is contaminated," Patel said. Laboratory tests also ascertain if any colour and preservatives that are not permissible in food are used. BMC officials said there are some shops, including eateries, which mostly carry out their business in the evening. Hence, the SHINE team has been asked to move around the eateries in the evening as well.

Drug offers 99.9% HIV shield, but Indians will have to wait
Mumbai: A new drug promising 99.9% protection against HIV received approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) a few days ago, but the city's HIV rights activists are sceptical about its practical impact in India. The main concern stems from the new injectable drug lenacapavir's substantial cost of Rs 24 lakh ($28,218) per person for two injections taken six months apart. Also, NACO (National AIDS Control Organisation) has not fully embraced PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) medications, the category to which lenacapavir belongs. "Our govt distributes condoms to break HIV transmission, it provides antiretroviral therapy drugs to prevent parent-to-child transmission of HIV, but it hasn't ever given PrEP to youngsters who are likely to indulge in high-risk behaviour," said health activist Ganesh Acharya. A couple of years ago, NACO made it mandatory for its counselling centres to disburse information on PrEP. He is alarmed because 75% of the 88% diagnosed with HIV in Mumbai between 2023-24 were in the 15-49 age group that is classified as young. PrEP is available for those seeking treatment in the private sector. PrEP, as a method to prevent HIV transmission before a risky exposure, has been around for almost 12 years. Dr Ishwar Gilada of the People's Health Organisation (India) said PrEP is the lesser evil compared to HIV transmission. The problem is more pronounced in Mumbai, he said, where the number of people with sexually transmitted diseases has been rising. Despite efforts, NACO officials were not available for comment. PrEP is not the only HIV-related policy that the govt hasn't acted on. Self-testing HIV kits, for instance, are not allowed in India. "We have self-testing kits for pregnancy, diabetes, and Covid, but policymakers fear about the mental health of people after a positive result in self-testing HIV kits," said Dr Gilada. The same logic is possibly behind the delay with introducing PrEP in the public health system, said a senior doctor, as a section of public health officials fear that giving PrEP would seem like a licence for risky behaviour. However, there is hope that lenacapavir would be available in India sooner rather than later. Bala of Bombay Gay said lenacapavir is a "monumental milestone forward in HIV treatment and prevention," but its pricing makes it inaccessible to Indian patients. "So, we have to wait and see if prices will come down over time," he added. Dr Gilada is positive Indian generic pharma companies licensed by Gilead Sciences can bring lenacapavir injections at below $100 per annum cost and may be rolled out soon. "India can do it," he said. In a statement released a couple of days ago, UNAIDS urged Gilead Lifesciences to drop the price of the new HIV prevention shot.

Fatehabad constable's infant son battles rare genetic disorder, cops across 6 dists mobilise to raise funds
Hisar: Eight-month-old Yuvansh, the son of Fatehabad police's cyber cell constable Rajesh, is battling Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type-1 (SMA), one of the rarest and most severe genetic disorders affecting infants. His survival depends on a life-saving injection costing Rs 14.5 crore, which must be procured from Switzerland. In a show of solidarity, police departments across six districts have joined hands to help raise the required amount. Rohtak additional director general of police Y Puran Kumar has written to the superintendents of police (SPs) in Rohtak, Bhiwani, and Charkhi Dadri urging officers to donate one day's salary for the cause. SPs of Kaithal (Aastha Modi) and Sirsa (Mayank Gupta) have also issued similar appeals. Policemen in Fatehabad are contributing at the local level as well. It is estimated that if officers across these districts contribute one day's salary, it could generate a significant portion of the funds required. His parents noticed that by the time he was two months old, he was not showing normal physical development. After consulting multiple doctors and undergoing various tests, the family received confirmation of SMA on May 18, 2025. The condition was further reviewed by doctors at PGI Chandigarh, who advised urgent administration of the Zolgensma gene therapy injection — considered one of the most expensive drugs in the world. Doctors emphasised that the injection must be administered before the age of two for the best possible outcome, followed by continued treatment for at least two to three months. In a desperate appeal, constable Rajesh has reached out to several prominent personalities and institutions for help. His pleas have been directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CM Nayab Saini, actors Salman Khan and Sonu Sood, transport minister Anil Vij, MP Naveen Jindal, the Tata Foundation, industrialist Gautam Adani, and the Union health ministry.
