Littler 'wanted to beat' Price on home soil
Luke Littler says he wanted the chance to play Gerwyn Price in Cardiff after the Welshman called him unstoppable.Littler, 18, was victorious at Cardiff's Utilita Arena on night seven of the Premier League in an incredible final with Michael van Gerwen where 'the Nuke' hit a nine-dart finish.Price was beaten 6-5 by Rob Cross in his quarter-final, denying the Welsh crowd of seeing a semi-final fixture between their hometown hero and the current world champion.Speaking after his victory, Littler says he was watching Price's quarter-final with the hopes of beating 'the Iceman' in the Welsh capital."He said some very nice things (about me)," said Littler.
"After my game, obviously I wanted Gerwyn to win and try and beat him on home soil."After Price's victory over Littler in Nottingham last week, the former world champion said Littler would only keep improving."He's the best player in the world and he's going to be for some years," said Price."I think he will beat Phil Taylor's record of 16 world titles. There's nobody at the PDC at the minute that will stop him - only the younger generation, JDC, can stop him."We can't stop him - he will only get better and better."Littler has not beaten Price in their last six contests, and was booed by the crowd in his quarter-final.However, Littler was pleased to have won over the Cardiff crowd by the end of the night with his sensational performance in the final."I got a few boos on the walk-on in my first game, but that's bound to happen," he added."You've just got to focus - hit the 180s, they'll be with you; hit the high checkouts and they'll be with you."I think [the crowd was flat] after Gerwyn went out, but I was playing really well and in the final, they were on my side."It will feel very different when the home favourite goes out in the first match, but then the crowd have got choices to make on who to support, and luckily they supported me tonight."
'I didn't realise it was in'
Littler's stunning nine-dart finish in the final came after the defending Premier League champion said he was disappointed not to have hit one two weeks ago in Brighton.Luke Humphries and Cross both hit nine-darters that night, with Littler taking the nightly win."I didn't realise it was in," said Littler."Obviously the crowd went berserk, Huw [Ware, match referee] didn't shout it, but when he shouted it, I finally realised and gave it the big celebration."Littler says 2025 is "hopefully" the year in which he breaks the record for the most nine-darters in a calendar year.The current record is at four, which Littler jointly holds with van Gerwen, who achieved the feat in 2016 and 2019."It's taken me a few months to hit one of them, and now I've got my second," said Littler."You know when it's almost coming. The hardest thing is the next treble after you've hit a 180."But when you get it, then you feel up for it."

Frimpong ready to fill Alexander-Arnold's 'big shoes' at Liverpool
June 23 (Reuters) - Trent Alexander-Arnold left "big shoes" to fill after leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid last month but new signing Jeremie Frimpong has no doubt he has the ability to replace the England international in the Premier League champions' defence. Frimpong's arrival from Bayer Leverkusen was announced hours after Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid, with the Dutch international becoming Arne Slot's first signing since winning the English top flight. "Liverpool. It's a big club, so it's big shoes regardless," Frimpong told Sky Sports in an interview published on Sunday, when asked if he would compete with Conor Bradley to succeed Alexander-Arnold as Liverpool's first choice for right back. "It's a winning team ... they win trophies for a reason. If you play for a team like Liverpool you have to fill in the shoes and perform. "I've always believed in myself. I'm a winner. That's what I'm going to bring to the team." Amsterdam-born Frimpong, who can also play as a winger, spent nine years at Manchester City as a youth player before making his senior debut in 2019 at Celtic, who won the Scottish Premiership in his first season. The 24-year-old joined Leverkusen in 2021 and made 34 appearances as they won the Bundesliga in 2023-24. "The Premier League is the best league in the world. I grew up in Manchester so I always wanted to come back. It was always the plan," Frimpong said. "I know what being a champion is like at Bayer Leverkusen, so joining a champion team is a privilege ... to go from watching (Liverpool) to playing for them is crazy. "The manager has told me how I can help the team and he really likes me as a player. It's given me extra motivation and belief."

William Gallas believes Arsenal should pull out of the race to sign Viktor Gyokeres and says Victor Osimhen is also the wrong fit for the Gunners. Mikel Arteta will hope the addition of an elite striker this summer takes his Arsenal team to the next level after going another season without a trophy. Kai Havertz has been Arteta's first-choice striker for the past two seasons but does not appear to have what it takes to lead the line for a title-winning side. Arsenal surprisingly decided not to sign a striker in January but are ready to make amends this summer, holding talks with Gyokeres, Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko. Gyokeres has reportedly rejected an approach from Manchester United in favour of a move to the Emirates Stadium but Arsenal are struggling to agree terms with both him and Sporting Lisbon. That has left Sesko as the most likely arrival in north London this summer but RB Leipzig have also set a steep asking price for the Slovenia international. A sudden move for Napoli outcast Osimhen cannot be ruled out but Gallas fears the Nigerian, who spent last season on loan at Galatasaray, would 'clash' with Arteta. Gallas says Gyokeres would therefore be a better fit for Arsenal but still not as good a signing as Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak. Isak has established himself as one of the best strikers in Europe since arriving at St James' Park and Gallas wants Arsenal to 'break the bank' for the Sweden international. 'Victor Osimhen is a top class striker but I could see him clashing with Mikel Arteta,' Gallas told Prime Casino. 'Viktor Gyokeres would be a better fit, but Arsenal have to win the Premier League next season which means they need to sign Alexander Isak. 'Isak is perfect for Arsenal and they should be going all out to sign him. He would adapt instantly and give them the best chance of winning the title out of any player in the world, they don't have time to let a striker adapt. 'Arsenal should go and break the bank for Isak. He is a 20 goal a season striker and he would be surrounding himself with quality players. 'He wouldn't be cheap so it's up to the board, but he is guaranteed goals.' Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for Isak over the past 12 months and the 25-year-old is believed to be Arteta's 'dream' target for the striker position. 'It's going to be a big one [summer] and we are very excited about it. 'When you are going to go again, we want to increase the depth of the squad and the quality and the skills that we need to go to the next step. 'Every summer is big because it is an opportunity – and especially because of the number of players we have in the squad right now, that is necessary. 'But it's a big summer for many things because first of all we have to maintain the good foundations that we have and then obviously how can we improve and evolve the team.' 'He likes to sit in front of the defence and protect while giving his team-mates freedom to get forward. 'He can offer a lot to the team in terms of giving other players more chances to get forward, Arteta might've seen Rodri doing that for Manchester City and wanted to do it with Arsenal.'
