Price lifts lid on Littler and Humphries' World Cup of Darts nightmare

Gerwyn Price reckons England's shock World Cup of Darts demise was down to Luke Littler and Luke Humphries not having the same team ethic as other countries in the event. Northern Ireland were crowned World Cup winners for the first time on Sunday night, beating Wales 10-9 in an epic final in Frankfurt. Daryl Gurney and Josh Rock got the better of Price and Jonny Clayton in a final which most expected to feature the English team of Humphries and Littler. However, the top two players in the world rankings were downed by Germany in their first game, beaten 8-4 by the home nation in a big shock in the last 16. Price was asked about the need for friendship and a connection between the pair to achieve success in the World Cup of Darts and he suggested this is where the English dream team went wrong. 'I think you need a connection, I think you need to have that camaraderie off the stage and have that connection,' the Iceman said after defeat in the final. 'When we all turned up…and I'm not just saying this because they lost…the only two players who didn't turn up together, didn't sit together, didn't play as a team…I'm not saying who they are, but they didn't win their first game. 'You need it. You need to turn up as a team, practice together, sit together, it's a team ethic and it didn't show with England and it showed on the board. 'They're great players individually, but you need to be a team. You need that team ethic, you need to be together as a team all the way though, but it didn't happen. 'I wanted them to do well but they didn't. I'm not just saying that, I wanted them to do well but they were rubbish.' The Northern Irish pair downed England's conquerors in the semi-finals, thrashing the Germans 8-1 before their brilliant tussle with the Welsh in the final. In a deciding leg of stunning quality Gurney landed a 180 before Rock hit a 171 to leave just 16, which Gurney nailed to wrap it up in just 11 darts. The 39-year-old has won major titles before, but not since the 2018 Players Championship Finals and he admitted that he felt his trophy-lifting days were over. 'This is better. I said in my interview yesterday, if we could win this it would be better than any individual competition I've won,' he said. 'I'm a very proud Northern Irishman today. So pleased to play with Josh. We said we could do damage, we've done damage. We came, we won, we conquered. 'We're not finished yet. I believed I was finished, that's why I'm so emotional because I thought I was probably done as a PDC winner but Josh gave me the belief.' More Trending 24-year-old Rock turned in a sublime performance over the piece in Germany, with PremiumDartsData revealing his tournament average to be 102.42. 'That was probably the best World Cup final there's ever been,' he said. 'That was just phenomenal.' Rock is still searching for his own first major TV title, but reckons this could be the springboard to launch him to individual glory. 'I'm hoping so,; he said. 'I believe in myself that it will happen.' Gerwyn Price savours massive consolation prize after darts World Cup Final loss

The Iceman is back in the Grand Slam after he and Jonny Clayton make Final in Frankfurt Cheered-up Gerwyn Price celebrated a major consolation prize after the heartbreak of World Cup Final defeat with Wales. The Iceman and partner Jonny Clayton were sunk in a dramatic last-leg decider as the 2020 and 2023 winners failed to complete a famous hat-trick when losing 10-9 to Northern Ireland. ‌ However, in beating Netherlands in the last-four to make the Final, the Cymru pair both secured spots in November's Grand Slam of Darts. That's especially sweet for Price who admitted last year it hurt him badly to miss out of the showpiece event in Wolverhampton. ‌ Having been a three-time winner in 2018, 2019 and 2021, defeat in the qualifiers in Leicester last year saw him miss the tournament for the first time since 2015 and it stung badly. But Price's ticket for 2025 is now already booked and he said: 'That was one of my aims this week and probably why I played so rubbish in the semi-final, knowing that it would get me in the Grand Slam. Then I relaxed a little bit in the Final, but things didn't really seem to happen. Probably due to the pressure of these [NI] boys throwing treble twenties for fun against us and we were up against it. "We got it at 9-9. We gave ourselves a chance, but they were a little bit better than us and they deserve it.' Price and Clayton was hugely gracious in defeat to Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney having played their part in an epic contest and simply being outdone in the thrilling shootout. Missed chances in a key 13th leg turned the tide of the Final. The former World champ , who sat out the tournament 12 months ago, said: 'I mean, we started off really slowly and we were trying to get into the game. It was really difficult. But we got ourselves in front. I think the leg to go 8-5 up was a crucial leg for us. And then we find ourselves 8-7 behind. But testament to the Irish team, Josh was scoring unbelievable. "We probably couldn't keep up with him. Last leg, I banged a 180, I thought: We got him back. Then he hits a 177 and I'm like: Oh, yeah, fair play. Gave him a high five. At the beginning of this tournament, I predicted Wales-Ireland final. I just predicted we would win. But fair play to them. They were fantastic.' Clayton echoed his partner's sentiments of congratulations to the Irish and admitted he was delighted to have his old sidekick back in harness. He said: 'Fair to Josh and Daryl. That last leg, oh my God, didn't they get off the blocks. We got it back to 9-9 and tried our best. Gezzy carried me, to be fair. I struggled starting off. "We gave it all. We get on great. It's nice to see him back in Germany! To be fair, he's just classy. I'm a proud man to be a captain here and to have a team-mate like this, oh, my God, awesome.'

Copy link Copied By Magic moment ahead for Irish pair Daryl Gurney and Josh Rock have the chance to write their names in the country's history. Copy link Copied By The Brits take over Frankfurt We are heading for an all-British final in the World Cup of Darts. Northern Ireland face Wales in the biggest game possible. After their demolition of Germany in the semis, the Irish will feel this is their trophy to lose. However, when facing a formidable pair like Price and Clayton, victory is far from guaranteed. Copy link Copied By The Iceman cometh for dragons It was by no means his best darts in that semi-final but Gerwyn Price stood up to be counted when it mattered most. After getting into the lead for the first time in the match to make it 6-5, Wales went for the kill and stunned the Dutch. Finishing the final leg wit tops/tops is just pure Price, not many players would have the minerals to go for it with the stakes so high. He let out his famous roar as he and Clayton celebrated, knowing they dodged a bullet in this one. Weirdly, they can probably take more from that win than if they whitewashed Netherlands. They showed their grit, came from behind, and booked their place in the World Cup of Darts final. Copy link Copied By Wales beat Netherlands 8-5 Copy link Copied By Wales* 8-5 Netherlands Wales go off the boil in the leg with some poor visits. Fortunately, the Dutch follow suit. Luke Littler and Humphries told 'you buckled' in England darts disaster as Gerwyn Price fires Wales World Cup warning

The Welsh are on course and Price reckons the Lukes didn't handle the World Cup expectation Pumped-up Gerwyn Price has dished out a fierce World Cup warning as Wales stay firmly on course to rip the crown back from England. The Iceman and partner Jonny Clayton are now favourites to win the coveted darts title after the shock Saturday demise of Luke Littler and Luke Humphries at the hands of hosts Germany. ‌ Price and his compatriot are into the last four having taken care of Hong Kong in Sunday afternoon's quarters and the ex-World Champion has told the rest that anything offered up by opponents during the final session will be fired straight back in spades in the chase for the trophy, which the duo won in 2020 and 2023. ‌ He said: 'We weren't at our ultimate best there, but we keep improving. I think we improved from the last game and, every game we go through, we improve again. Whatever anyone throws at us, we'll throw a little bit more back. So, yeah, bring it on.' Price and Clayton went seven darts in an attempted nine during their win and the Ferret smiled: 'I was thinking it's time for a nine darter in the pairs, but I was closer to home than treble 19! Never mind, I tried..' Wales play Netherlands in the semi-final shootout after Danny Noppert and Gian van Veen built on their whitewash of Scotland to hammer Czechia. Hosts Germany backed up their famous English win with a thrilling last-leg success over Australia, who missed a match dart from Damon Heta to win. Home hero Martin Schindler hit the winning shot and said: 'We needed to fight our way through and that's what we did. If you want to be amongst the best, you need to grow over your own limits and that is what I always try to do. Partner Ricardo Pietreczko added: 'It's unbelievable to reach the semis. On the Tour, we are opponents and now we are a team. And we are winning it!' Germany play Northern Ireland, who beat the Republic, in their semi and Schindler said: 'I have to say Josh [Rock] and Daryl [Gurney] are a good pair, but so are we and I think we have a chance to beat them and I think they have more pressure than we do as they have the higher rankings. We just want to win.' As the Welsh, Germans and Northern Irish fight for the title, fans of the sport are still stunned at the shock loss of the English super-team and Wayne Mardle they 'buckled' under the pressure and weight of expectation. The former World Championship semi-finalist and Sky TV commentator said: 'Luke and Luke were no doubt feeling the stresses and strains of being massive favourites. To go on about how good Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis were, they made it look easy. That is how difficult World Cup pairings can be. Pressure got to them at some point, Luke and Luke. They buckled and their opponents didn't.'
