Meghalaya plans to strengthen Act to curb crime in guise of tourism

Shillong: Meghalaya state cabinet on Friday decided to revisit the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) following the recent murder of a tourist in Sohra. "The aim is to further strengthen the Act to better prevent criminal activities carried out under the guise of tourism. This decision reflects our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents, while continuing to welcome genuine tourists to our state," CM Conrad K Sangma posted in the social media after the cabinet decision. Regarding the demand for the inner line permit (ILP) system in Meghalaya, the tourism minister and govt spokesperson said the state assembly has already adopted a resolution on this matter. However, the proposal is pending before the ministry of home affairs (MHA), which has raised several queries that the state government is working to address. "Some of these queries stem from the fact that Meghalaya is not an endpoint. We also serve as a transit hub for other northeast states, including Silchar, Mizoram, and Tripura," he said. "We already have a tourism app, which records all movements of tourists, including the cars or whatever mode of transport they use, and also registration of compulsory registration of all visitors at various home-stays, resorts, and hotels. Now, the use of this app is roughly around 50%, but we will now make it compulsory that all home-stays, resorts, and other places of accommodation should register all visitors, mandatorily," the tourism minister said. "MRSSA is our framework for ensuring the safety of all residents in Meghalaya. We now plan to revisit the Act to address loopholes, introduce stronger enforcement, and ensure a secure yet tourist-friendly atmosphere following the Sohra incident," the tourism minister added. Tourism in Sohra remains strong despite the tragedy. "Visitor footfall continues to rise. Even while the case remained unsolved, numbers were steady. Now, with Meghalaya's reputation restored, we expect the footfall to touch 20 lakhs by the Cherry Blossom Festival," he said. "At the start of the cabinet meet, we adopted a resolution to formally acknowledge with gratitude the role played by agencies, govt departments, especially the role played by the police in handling the case which occurred in Sohra, the loss of life of one tourist. The cabinet acknowledged the role of all stakeholders, especially those who were part of the rescue team," he said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Meghalaya pushes for regional bus network

Shillong: Meghalaya on Friday approved the CM's regional connectivity scheme, aimed at enhancing transport links between district, block, and regional headquarters. Announcing the initiative, CM Conrad K Sangma said the scheme will introduce a fleet of 90 buses to improve commuting options for students, office workers, and the general public. Under the scheme, financial support of up to 50% of the total vehicle cost will be provided, with the government contributing 35% toward the on-road cost as a down payment, while beneficiaries will contribute 5%. The remaining 60% will be financed through loans repayable over five years. Tourism minister Paul Lyngdohsaid the scheme will encourage entrepreneurship. He added that buses will be scheduled to arrive at district headquarters by 9:30am and depart by 5:30pm to serve office-goers, students, hospital patients, and market visitors. Lyngdoh said, "This is a major initiative that will address the existing transport deficit and enhance regional mobility." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
