Video: Forensic review of dismembered remains confirms 10 died in Vryheid crash

The Citizen4 days ago

'A trail of destruction… innocent lives lost, and the lives of many families have been turned upside down.'
These were the words of the KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, following a horrific crash near Vryheid in KZN.
The Witness reports that after a forensic review of dismembered remains, it was confirmed that 10 people died in the collision.
Duma confirmed the death toll after visiting the crash site, hospitals and mortuaries. He said poor visibility in the early hours of the morning contributed to confusion and an initial miscount of casualties at the scene.
The devastating accident, involving a bus and a truck, occurred on the R34 near Vryheid in the early hours this morning.
The EFF confirmed that the victims were members returning from the party's June 16 Youth Day rally in Umlazi. The party said it is working closely with authorities to identify the deceased and support affected families.
According to the Department of Transport, the 10 deceased include seven males and three females.
'Thirty-three passengers sustained minor injuries and were able to walk, three were injured but not critically, and two are in critical condition. The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the Dundee Mortuary. Both the bus and truck drivers survived and are receiving medical attention in hospital,' says Duma.
The Road Traffic Inspectorate and the SAPS is conducting a thorough investigation into the crash.
'Conflicting survivor accounts have surfaced, with some alleging the bus driver attempted to overtake, while others claim he may have fallen asleep behind the wheel. We do not want to speculate at this stage. We are confident the investigation will provide clarity,' Duma adds.

Robbery suspect with toy gun shot dead by security officer in KZN

An off-duty security officer fatally shot a suspected robber who confronted him with a toy firearm in Ogunjini, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday, 20 June. The security officer employed by a Durban-based company was returning home when a man approached him and drew what appeared to be a firearm, demanding his valuables. The officer responded by drawing his licensed 9mm pistol and firing two shots, striking the suspect in the chest. The wounded man dropped the weapon, later confirmed to be a toy and fled into nearby bushes, where he collapsed. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance at around 20:19. On arrival, officers found the suspect's body approximately five metres from the roadside. Officers recovered the toy firearm at the scene. The security officer told RUSA that four armed men robbed him on the same stretch of road a week earlier, taking his Samsung cellphone and wallet. Following that incident, he began carrying his firearm for protection. The attempted robbery on Friday did not injure him. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Aserie Ndlovu murder case postponed as fifth suspect joins

The murder case was postponed after the newly-arrested fifth suspect opted to appoint a private lawyer. Pretoria-based journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner Zodwa Mdluli were reported missing since February 2025. Picture: Facebook/Sbusiso Aserie Ndlovu The case of the five men charged in connection with the disappearance and murder of journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdluli, has been postponed to 4 July. The case was postponed to allow the fifth suspect, Thabang Isaac Hlophe, to secure legal representation after joining the other four. Father Samuel Mogowe, Lucky Sikhosana, David Madisha, and Sello Skhalo Uoane previously abandoned their bail applications. Court appearance for formal joinder The five accused, who appeared in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court in Mpumalanga on Friday, are facing two counts of kidnapping and murder each. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said Friday's court appearance was for the formal joinder of Hlophe to the matter and a possible bail application on his behalf. 'However, the application did not proceed as Hlophe opted to appoint a private attorney to represent him,' Nyuswa said. All suspects have been remanded in custody. 'The [NPA] condemns acts of violent crime and remains resolute in pursuing justice for victims,' Nyuswa said. The accused were arrested on different occasions during a police intelligence-driven operation. The first suspect arrested was the last to be in the company of the missing couple. 'The second, third and fourth suspects that have been arrested were found with different vehicle parts believed to be those of the missing journalist,' police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said shortly after the arrests. 'One of those arrested is said to be a mechanic who builds and fixes cars in the KwaMhlanga area. Two VW Citi Golfs that were found in possession of the suspects have been seized,' Mathe added. Remains and DNA confirmation Skeletal remains with gunshot wounds, believed to be of the missing couple, were discovered in Rust de Winter along the Limpopo-Gauteng border in May after the suspects identified the location. Earlier this month, police confirmed that DNA analysis positively linked the remains to Ndlovu and Mdluli. 'The human remains were analysed and matched with the reference sample of the biological relatives of the deceased. A positive DNA match thus confirms that the discovered remains are those of the missing couple,' Mathe said at the time. Elderly woman brutally murdered, found in bathtub in Pretoria-Moot

An 81-year-old woman was found brutally murdered in her Pretoria-Moot home on Tuesday, sparking a swift and intense police investigation. Pretoria Rekord reports that, within 12 hours, detectives arrested two suspects, one of whom was caught with the victim's belongings. According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, members of the Pretoria Moot SAPS responded to a call for police assistance at a local residence on Tuesday morning at around 10:00. 'Upon arrival, officers met with a security officer who had been contacted by a woman affiliated with a local NGO providing social support services. The woman explained that she regularly visited the 81-year-old female resident to assist with laundry and provide food support, as the elderly woman lived alone.' He says that on the morning in question, the NGO worker was surprised when her visit was answered by an unknown coloured female, who claimed the elderly resident was unwell and had taken medication to rest. 'Although unsettled, the NGO worker accepted the laundry handed to her and left. Her concern prompted her to contact the security officer, requesting a welfare check at the residence.' Van Dyk says police officers proceeded to the address. 'The front door was locked, and after failed attempts to gain entry, officers moved to the rear of the house, where they found the back door open. 'Inside, the home had been ransacked. Bloodstains were visible in the main bedroom, and in the bathroom, the body of an elderly white female was discovered in the bathtub, partially submerged in water with visible blood.' He adds that emergency medical services were summoned and, upon arrival, declared the woman deceased. 'Crime scene experts were immediately called to process the scene. 'Pretoria Moot detectives began their preliminary investigation and obtained a description of a possible suspect. Informers were activated to assist.' Van Dyk adds that later that evening, at around 21:30, informants notified detectives that a possible suspect matching the description had been seen in the area. 'Detectives swiftly responded and traced a woman accompanied by her boyfriend on a nearby street. Upon searching the pair, police recovered several items belonging to the deceased.' Both suspects were arrested on the scene and detained for murder. 'Further investigation led to the recovery of additional stolen items at locations where the suspects had allegedly sold them.' Major-General Samuel Thine praised the investigating team for their swift and committed response, ensuring that justice was served within 12 hours of the incident. Both suspects appeared in court today and were remanded and returned to custody. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel.
