‘No place for hate speech in public service'

Time of India01-06-2025

Varanasi: While pronouncing sentence for Abbas Ansari, SBSP MLA from Mau Sadar who was disqualified from assembly membership on Sunday, chief judicial magistrate (MP-MLA) court of Mau on Saturday had commented there was no place for hate or provocative speech in public service rendered by politicians and that it became more serious when such speech was aimed at influencing election process and officials conducting it.
On Saturday, Abbas was sentenced under five sections of IPC with a maximum imprisonment of two years in the 2022 case of the 'Hisab-Kitab' hate speech incident. CJM (MP-MLA) K P Singh, in his 48-page judgment, commented, "There is no place for hate or inflammatory speech in public service, such as politics. This becomes even more serious when the intention is to directly or indirectly influence elections by causing disorder based on religion.
" The judgment added, "Officials appointed in the district are under direct control of the Election Commission during the model code of conduct. Threatening them with post-election retribution certainly instils fear among voters as well." It further stated, "In a diverse country like India, inflammatory speech harms both, nation and society. Such public representatives, after winning elections, would waste their time teaching lessons to opponents, which has no place in democracy or society and is unacceptable."
CJM further said, "Before determining punishment in a criminal case, it is necessary to consider nature and circumstances of the crime and involvement of the accused. Punishment in criminal cases serves a social purpose. Not only should the convicted realise that they had committed a crime, the victim should also feel justice had been served. Purpose of punishment should be to send a message to society that committing a crime can result in severe penalties.
"
The judgment stated, "The accused has a criminal history and several serious criminal records are also associated with his family members. The family of the accused, Abbas Ansari, has held legislative assembly seat of Mau Sadar for nearly 20 years. During his election campaign, Abbas Ansari made a speech from the stage threatening to settle scores with state govt officials after elections, which could have disrupted communal harmony.
Therefore, it does not seem appropriate to give a lesser punishment to the accused."
While contesting 2022 assembly polls from Mau Sadar seat as an SP-SBSP alliance candidate, Abbas had threatened officials from a public meeting dais in Paharpur area on Mar 3, 2022, saying, "After formation of SP-led govt in state, officials will have to give 'hisab-kitab' (account) of their work during the past regime before they are transferred."
Mau police lodged a case in this connection on Mar 4, 2022.
Abbas won the election, but landed in jail following his arrest by the Prayagraj unit of ED in a money laundering case. After staying behind bars since Feb 15, 2023, Abbas was released from Kasganj jail on Mar 21, 2025 after the Supreme Court on Mar 7 granted him conditional bail in a case under the Gangster Act. But, almost two months after coming out of jail, Abbas was sentenced in the hate speech case and also lost his membership from state assembly.
In jail since 2005, his father, late mafia don Mukhtar, a five-time MLA from Mau Sadar, died after being rushed to a hospital from Banda jail, in 2024. While Abbas was being sentenced by CJM court in May, his uncle and SP MP from Ghazipur, Afzal Ansari, was holding a meeting with officials in Ghazipur. He declined any comment on the sentencing of Abbas in the hate speech case on Saturday. Despite repeated efforts, Afzal could not be contacted on Sunday.

Huzurabad MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy arrested over allegations of extortion

In a significant turn of events in Telangana politics, Huzurabad BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy was apprehended by Warangal Subedari Police at Shamshabad Airport. He has since been transported to Warangal for questioning. The detainment stems from serious allegations made by a granite quarry trader, Manoj Reddy, who operates a quarry in Vangapalli, Kamalapur mandal. Reddy's wife, Umadevi, lodged a complaint with the Subedari Police, claiming that MLA Reddy threatened her, demanding a payment of Rs. 50 lakhs. Modi slams RJD for 'insulting' Ambedkar

Siwan (Bihar): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday slammed the RJD for allegedly insulting Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar and asserted that the people of Bihar would not tolerate any disrespect to the Dalit icon. At a rally in Siwan district, which marked his fifth visit this year to the state and second in less than a month, Modi hailed the "big role" played by Bihar in India's emergence as the "third largest economy" of the world. In a nearly 45-minute-long speech that followed the launch of projects worth more than Rs 5,900 crore and the flagging off of a Vande Bharat train, the Prime Minister cautioned the people against "attempts to recapture economic resources of Bihar" by the RJD-led opposition in the assembly polls due later this year. "Ambedkar was against dynasty rule. But they (RJD and its allies) do not like it. So, they have his portrait placed at their feet. On my way, I saw posters demanding an apology for this insult to Babasaheb," said Modi. "But there has been no apology. This is because they hold Dalits in contempt. In contrast, Modi has Babasaheb in his heart and would like to keep his portrait close to his chest," he added. Modi, who did not mention RJD chief Lalu Prasad by name, referred to the instance of a portrait of Ambedkar being placed close to the feet of the ailing septuagenarian, for which he (Prasad) has been drawing flak from the BJP-led NDA. "The reason is that the RJD-Congress people have little respect for people belonging to the deprived castes, the Dalits, the OBCs and the EBCs. They consider themselves above Babasaheb Ambedkar. But they must remember that the disrespect to Babasaheb Ambedkar will not be forgiven by the people of Bihar," the PM said. Modi also asserted that the world was greatly impressed with India's progress and underscored Bihar's big role in the country's emergence as the world's "third largest economy". "You all know I have returned from abroad only yesterday. During my tour, I met many leaders of the developed world. They all were greatly impressed with the rate of progress in India. They are watching India becoming the third-largest economy in the world.

Mumbai was ‘left to its fate' by Congress-led govt: Shah

MUMBAI: Union home and cooperation minister Amit Shah slammed the opposition for its criticism of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, and asked them what they did during their 'double engine government' in the state and Mumbai, between 2004 and 2014. 'Mumbai was left to its fate,' he declared. (Photo by Santosh Kumar/ Hindustan Times) Shah attended two functions in Mumbai on Friday. He was chief guest at a national conference to commemorate the International Year of Cooperatives. He then launched the centenary celebration of the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA) at the YB Chavan Centre. While speaking at the MACCIA, Shah said that Mumbai was largely adrift under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), from 2004 to 2014. 'I used to fear for the future of Mumbai when I saw the traffic, illegal slums and dilapidated buildings in the city. Since 2014, except for two and half years, Devendra Fadnavis has led the government in the state as CM and deputy CM in the Shinde government, and has brought tremendous development,' he remarked. He added, 'The Narendra Modi government gave ₹ 7 lakh crore for infrastructure development in Mumbai. The metro line, a whopping 337km, is being laid in the city with an investment of ₹ 1.5 lakh crore. We developed the Coastal Road, Atal Setu and have started the Versova-Virar sea link, and Virar-Alibag multi-modal corridor.' Shah said the opposition has criticised the ruling alliance for its slum eradication effort. 'I want to ask them what they did for Mumbai during their ten-year tenure, never mind their contribution to Maharashtra. Mumbai was left to its fate,' he said. Shah said the opposition has criticised the ruling alliance for lower devolution of taxes to Maharashtra, but the data says otherwise. 'During the 11 years of Modi rule, Maharashtra received ₹ 7.42 lakh crore through tax devolution, much higher than the ₹ 1.91 lakh crore given by the Congress-led government during 2004-2014,' he said.
