India advocates democratisation of Artificial Intelligence: Ashwini Vaishnaw at Russia Forum

St Petersburg [Russia], June 19 (ANI): India on Thursday presented its vision for artificial intelligence at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025, with Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw delivering a keynote address at a high-level session titled 'At the Forefront of Technology: The Future of AI & Global Competition.'
Addressing a distinguished gathering of global delegates, including representatives from Central Asian countries, the minister outlined India's inclusive and transformative approach to AI.
In his speech, Vaishnaw emphasized the need for the democratization of AI, underscoring India's commitment to making the technology accessible and beneficial to every citizen.
'Equity and accessibility are central to our AI vision,' he said, highlighting how India aims to ensure that AI's advantages reach across all sections of society, industries, and geographical regions.
He elaborated on India's national AI strategy through the INDIAai Mission, which is grounded in the principles of ethical, transparent, and responsible innovation.
The mission, he said, aligns closely with India's broader socio-economic goals, placing a strong emphasis on inclusive development and sustainability.
A major focus of the minister's address was India's young, tech-savvy population. Vaishnaw highlighted how the country is strategically nurturing an AI-skilled workforce to fuel innovation and economic growth.
This talent pool, he suggested, would play a pivotal role in positioning India as a leading global force in AI development and application.
On the sidelines of the forum, Vaishnaw also held a bilateral meeting with Russia's Deputy Prime Minister, Alexei Overchuk. The two leaders discussed expanding collaboration in key sectors such as transport, connectivity, infrastructure development, and rare earth minerals--areas critical to both countries' strategic and technological futures.
The minister's visit to SPIEF 2025 reinforced India's rising prominence as a technology-driven nation.

Congress MP Randhawa slams J&K CM Omar Abdullah over remarks on Indus waters

Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa strongly rebuked Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his opposition to a proposed 113-km canal to divert surplus water from the Indus river system to Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, emphasising Punjab's historical and agricultural significance. He recalled the challenges Punjab faced during Operation Sindoor , asserting that there wasn't as much "Pakistattack in J&K as there was in Punjab." Speaking in to ANI, Randhawa said, "One should not make statements that cast doubt on patriotism. Punjabis have never done that. And even during Operation Sindoor, there wasn't as much Pakistani attack in J&K as there was in Punjab. Punjab was turned into a battlefield. The patriotism of Punjab, the strength of Punjab, and the strength of its agriculture -- as long as Punjab remains strong, India remains strong." Randhawa said he was "sad" and "hurt" by the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister's recent comments. "I don't know in what context Mr. Abdullah made his statement, but I'm sad. Considering the relationships his grandfather, father, and himself have had with Punjabis and with Punjab, and the faith his father and grandfather had in Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple), I am hurt by his statement." Air fares surge post Ahmedabad plane crash, rampant price gouging

Following the Ahmedabad plane crash, a sharp increase in air ticket prices is observed, something that can be described as price gouging, or charging excessively high rates. According to reports, nearly 41 per cent tickets have been cancelled, said Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council Chairperson Jyoti Mayal. A travel agent mentioned that a ticket, which was priced slightly above Rs 6,000 before the accident, is now being sold for around Rs 34,000. Mayal said that there has been a significant rise in ticket cancellations following the Ahmedabad plane accident. Speaking to ANI, she said, "I don't want to take names, but some airlines have increased their ticket prices. This is reportedly because flights that are running full due to cancellations have seen a spike in ticket fares. According to her information, around 41 per cent of tickets have been cancelled. However, similar trends were also noticed recently in connection with Jammu and Kashmir." She further mentioned that they are receiving queries from people asking whether the prices of exit row seats will now increase. "I would like to clarify that there is no such information yet suggesting that the fares for exit row seats have increased. She said that it is certain that most people are now demanding seats in the exit row. She also pointed out that travel agents have suffered significant losses in recent days. Whenever any adverse situation arises, the travel trade is the first to be affected," she told ANI. Roopak Punyani, owner of Delhi-based travel company Travel Canvas India Private Limited, said that apart from the overall global situation and recent tensions between India and Pakistan, the Ahmedabad accident has had a serious negative impact. Cancellations are mainly coming from the corporate sector. Most people are now ensuring that they avoid flying in Boeing aircraft, he said. While he did not directly say that this has caused a rise in ticket prices, he noted that direct flights from certain locations are no longer operating. He also mentioned that cancellations have impacted ticket prices, leading to a surge. For example, a flight from Delhi to Dhaka, which used to cost around Rs 7,000 to Rs 9,000, is now priced between Rs 30,000 to Rs 34,000. According to him, airline companies have increased ticket fares, and this change is being seen due to the cancellation of Air India flights following the Ahmedabad plane accident.
