Morocco sees 55% surge in Foreign Direct Investment in 2024 says UNCTAD
Morocco saw a significant rise in foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows in 2024, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development's (UNCTAD) World Investment Report 2025. The report highlighted North Africa as the main driver of FDI growth on the continent, with Morocco's FDI increasing by 55% to $1.6 billion. Tunisia also experienced a 21% rise, reaching $936 million, alongside strong gains in Egypt. The construction sector remains a key area of investment across Africa, driven by infrastructure gaps and growing urban development needs. Morocco, together with Ghana and Kenya, attracted medium-sized projects with notable impact, while countries like Egypt, South Africa, and Angola secured larger-scale investments. Although the total value of announced new Greenfield investment projects in Africa dropped to $113 billion in 2024 from $178 billion in 2023, North Africa was a notable exception. The region saw a 12% increase in project value, reaching $76 billion, accounting for two-thirds of the continent's total capital expenditures on new projects. The report also highlighted seven major energy transition deals in Africa worth around $17 billion. Egypt was a prominent destination, hosting four of these projects. These include green hydrogen initiatives in Egypt and Tunisia, large solar and wind projects in Namibia, and a Moroccan project focused on producing green ammonia and industrial fuel.

Rabat – The International Finance Corporation (IFC) announced on Thursday a partnership with Maroc Telecom to support its subsidiaries in Chad and Mali through a two-loan program of €370 million. A statement from IFC said the partnership seeks to improve mobile connectivity and the quality of mobile internet, supporting the rollout of 4 services and expanding internet reach to more people and businesses across Chad and Mali. Mohamed Benchaaboun, CEO of Maroc Telecom, commented on the long-term partnership with IFC, noting that it will provide further opportunities to enhance their portfolio of offers and services like Mobile Money. 'With over 57 million customers outside of Morocco, Maroc Telecom provides all telecom services, from fixed line to mobile, and broadband data access,' IFC quoted Benchaaboun as saying in the statement, noting that IAM's operations recognize the importance of mobile data in accessing the internet. '4G services are helping to reduce the digital divide,' he said, adding that the partnership aims to contribute to boosting the two countries' development. Makhtar Diop, IFC Managing Director, also commented on the partnership, noting that similar support for companies like Maroc Telecom is a strategic priority for IFC, especially in conflict-affected areas. 'By mobilizing private capital to expand digital infrastructure, we're unlocking opportunities for innovation, skills development, and job creation across Africa- fully aligned with the continent's priorities,' he said. The partnership also aligns with the African Union's ambition to build a secure single digital market in Africa by 230. Maroc Telecom is one of the leading telecommunication operators across Morocco. The operator reported a revenue of MAD 36.7 billion or $3.67 billion last year, marking a 1.2% increase. The group attributed the increase to a 4.6% revenue growth from its Moov Africa subsidiaries. Operations on the continent recorded strong performance across key segments, with mobile data growing by 15.6%, fixed internet expanding by 21.1%, and Mobile Money services rising by 14.4%.

FAR drone strikes Polisario vehicle near Sand Wall
A Royal Armed Forces (FAR) drone struck a Polisario vehicle on Thursday, June 19. «The operation took place in the Karzaze region, near Mijek, east of the Sand Wall. The outcome of the strike remains unknown for now», a source familiar with the matter told Yabiladi. According to the same source, the Polisario elements had first crossed into Mauritanian territory clandestinely, intending to carry out an operation against Moroccan positions, before being targeted by the FAR drone. However, a Polisario-affiliated media outlet offered a different version of events, claiming the Moroccan drone targeted a «civilian vehicle» in the same area. It's worth noting that FAR drones had already targeted Polisario vehicles in Karzaze on May 29. This latest operation comes just 24 hours after Brahim Ghali presided over the graduation ceremony of a new cohort of the Front's armed militias on Wednesday.
