Arkansas mayor, murder victim's sister reacts to Grant Hardin's escape
The town where Arkansas prison escapee and convicted murderer Grant Hardin once served as police chief remains on edge, according to its mayor who is also the sister of Hardin's victim.
"Anxiety is still high," Cheryl Tillman, the mayor of Gateway, Arkansas, told USA TODAY in an interview May 28. "I think everybody's still on alert, being vigilant, doing every precaution that they can."
Hardin, 56, escaped from the North Central Unit in Calico Rock on May 25, wearing a "makeshift outfit designed to mimic law enforcement," according to the Arkansas Department of Corrections.
Hardin had been serving time for the 2017 murder of James Appleton, Tillman's brother, in Gateway and the 1997 rape of a school teacher in nearby Rogers. He was sentenced to 80 years on the combined convictions, according to court records.
Tillman described Hardin, who served as Gateway's police chief while Tillman was on the city council in 2016, as "very arrogant" and "angry."
"He's an evil person," Tillman said.
Hardin remains at large as of Wednesday night, with the FBI, Department of Corrections, Arkansas State Police and local police were working to find Hardin, officials said earlier in the day.
Hardin pleaded guilty to in 2017 to murder in the first degree for shooting and killing Appleton in February of the same year, according to court records.
Appleton's brother-in-law and Cheryl's husband, Andrew Tillman, told Benton County Sheriff's investigators that he was on the phone with Appleton when he was shot, according to a probable cause affidavit. Andrew was the Gateway's mayor at the time of the shooting.
Cheryl described Appleton as a "very good brother" with a strong civic sense who obtained a license to work for the Gateway Rural Water Authority when asked by his brother-in-law.
"Everybody in this town knew James. They knew that they could call James if they needed help on anything," Tillman said.
Tillman said that learning of Hardin's escape brought back memories of the murder.
"Everything was happening all over again. From the time he shot my brother and the time we had to go to court with him," Tillman said.
The 1997 rape was the focus of a 2023 documentary titled "Devil in the Ozarks," for which Tillman was interviewed. She said that the interview was "tough to do."
"We've since been in touch with the subjects of that film and law enforcement and are praying for Hardin's immediate capture in the name of justice and the victims and their families' peace of mind," Ari Mark, one of the executive producers of the documentary, told USA TODAY in a statement May 28.
Tillman emphasized the need for residents of Gateway, a place she described as "a very quiet town" where "everybody knows everybody," to remain vigilant while Hardin remained at-large.
"Lock their doors. If they need to, load their guns," Tillman said. "Whatever they need to do, just stay vigilant and watch your backs."

22-year-old woman arrested after allegedly sending nude pictures of herself to 14-year-old
A 22-year-old woman sent nude images of herself to a 14-year-old boy, the Chemung County Sheriff's Office alleged in a Facebook post announcing her arrest. "The Chemung County Sheriff's Office announces the arrest of ANAMARIA E. MILAZZO, a 22-year-old female from the Town of Elmira, for Disseminating Indecent Material to Minors in the Second Degree, a class E Felony, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a Class A Misdemeanor," the June 16 post stated. "On June 9, 2025, a School Resource Officer assigned to the Greater Southern Tier BOCES received a complaint alleging MILAZZO sent indecent material to a minor," the post continued. "The Chemung County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division assisted with the investigation. During the investigation, the Criminal Division learned that over a three-month period, MILAZZO had sent nude photographs of herself to a 14-year-old male." Chemung County is located in the state of New York. Due to the Empire State's no-cash bail law, the woman was released and she "did not spend time in jail," WETM 18 News reported. "The Greater Southern Tier Board of Cooperative Educational Services provides educational leadership, services, and support to meet the needs of our students and school districts," according to the GST BOCES website. WETM 18 News reported that it reached out to BOCES and was told that the woman was previously employed there but had been fired. Fox News Digital reached out to GST BOCES for comment on Saturday morning but did not receive a response by the time of publication. "As a result of the investigation, MILAZZO was arrested for Disseminating Indecent Material to Minors in the Second Degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. MILAZZO was issued an appearance ticket to appear in the Wellsburg Village Court at a later date," the sheriff's office's Facebook post noted.

OGDEN, Utah () — A man living in Ogden has been arrested and charged after he admitted to sexual crimes against children during a job security clearance process. He is also allegedly being investigated by the U.S. Military for crimes committed against children in Maryland. Sean Allen Loveridge, 52, has been charged with seven counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony. According to documents, on June 11, 2025, an Ogden City Police Officer was assigned to investigate Loveridge after he allegedly confessed to sexual crimes against children during a 'job process and security clearance.' Loveridge allegedly told the officer that he had sexually assaulted four young children — some of whom were family members — while living in another state and that he was attracted to 'pubescent and prepubescent females.' During the interview, Loveridge also allegedly confessed that he had previously viewed child sexual abuse material (CSAM), but 'did not do it anymore.' He told the officer that he had an external hard drive for storing information and photos, but claimed it did not contain any CSAM. Loveridge gave the external hard drive to the officer to search. The police officer drafted a search warrant for the external hard drive and began investigating what was stored on it on June 13. According to documents, the officer found 'hundreds of screenshots of young girls on Instagram' that were graphic and/or sexual in nature.
