Alex Cullen confirms surprise new role after getting brutally fired from Today: 'This is an exciting next chapter for me'

Daily Mail2 days ago

Alex Cullen has confirmed his surprising new role, almost six months after he was fired from the Today show for accepting a $50,000 gift from controversial Block bidder Adrian Portelli.
In January, the presenter, 44, was given the sizeable sum after he was the first media personality to use Portelli's self-proclaimed nickname 'McLaren Man' live on air - sparking a firestorm which resulted in him leaving Channel Nine.
He has now secured a new role as a sports presenter on Melbourne 's Gold 1043.3's top-rating breakfast program The Christian O'Connell Show.
Host Christian O'Connell confirmed the exciting news live on-air on Thursday.
'Alex Cullen is brilliant journalist who is looking for a job! You might recognise the name, he's the guy who took the $50,000... That's our guy!' Christian began.
From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop.
Christian added the commercial radio sector had different rules than TV and so they were happy to welcome Alex to their team.
'Now Channel Nine might go, "Listen, we can't have that", but commercial breakfast radio... We are very much up for payola! Don't worry Alex, you have found a home here, my friend,' he said.
Alex shared his excitement at joining the show in a statement.
'This is such an exciting next chapter for me,' he wrote.
'I actually started my career in radio, so to be coming back to it and joining a show that's so loved and so full of heart is a real thrill.
'I can't wait to be on air with Christian, Pats and Rio, and to get to know Melbourne – my family and I are thrilled to be making it our new home.'
He will officially join the show next month, after Christian's co- star Jack Post announced his resignation last month.
Earlier this year, Alex was axed from the Nine Network after he accepted $50,000 from The Block billionaire Adrian Portelli.
Today host Karl Stefanovic made the announcement that Alex had left the network live on-air.
'As most of you are well aware, our colleague Alex Cullen has not been on air with us this past week,' a solemn Stefanovic told viewers.
'There has been widespread reporting on the circumstances surrounding this, what I can say is that last night, Alex and Nine agreed he would finish with the network.
'Alex has, of course, been part of the Today family for five years now, he's always ready with a smile and a laugh and without hesitation speaking for all of us here, we can say that we are going to miss him terribly.
'A terrific fella, what you see is what you get and he has been a great mate to all of us over these years and we wish Alex, his wife Bonnie and his beautiful kids all the very best for the future.'
A Nine spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia: 'Nine has agreed with Today presenter and journalist Alex Cullen that he will finish with the network following a review into a recent incident.'
The scandal kicked off when Portelli had grown tired of his long-used nickname 'Mr Lambo' and offered the cash reward to the first person to use his new moniker on air, with Alex obliging on the Today show.
The Block entrepreneur then posted what appeared to be a bank transfer of $50,000 to the presenter on Instagram.
Accepting cash, gifts or benefits to undermine journalistic independence, and improperly using a journalistic position for personal gain, are both breaches of the journalism code of ethics as defined by the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance union.
The ill-advised stunt led to Alex being suspended by Nine and he did not appear on the show while the network investigated the payment.
Nine's parting of ways with Alex went ahead despite Portelli's claim that the journalist intended the money to be paid to charity all along.
Network insiders also told Daily Mail Australia that the stunt could have been beneficial for the network and Portelli, if Alex had advised the promoter that, as a journalist, he was unable to accept any payment for making the comment on-air.

Andy Farrell says Lions 'won't sugar-coat' defeat to Argentina

Andy Farrell demanded an improvement from his British and Irish Lions when they arrive in Australia after they slipped to a 28-24 defeat by Argentina in Dublin. The Lions lost their opening tour match for the first time since 1971 after their second-half fightback was overturned when Santiago Cordero finished the match-winning try in the 59th minute. Advertisement On Saturday they head Down Under before facing the Western Force a week later and Farrell is seeking an immediate response to the error-strewn display seen at a sold-out Aviva Stadium. Not the result we wanted, but a historic night in Dublin. Thank you to the incredible fans who came to see us tonight, and to all of you who tuned in to support us from around the world 🙏🦁 #Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) June 20, 2025 'We made it a tough game. Congratulations to Argentina, they thoroughly deserved to win the match. I'm sure that's a big moment in Argentinean rugby history,' Farrell said. 'We had plenty of opportunities and we should have done better to convert them, but the whole story of the game is that we compounded too many errors. 'I wouldn't give familiarity as an excuse. We need to be better than that. The Lions are good players coming together. Advertisement 'We won't sugar-coat this. We need to be honest because if we're not honest, how do we gain trust with each other? 'Losing hurts, especially in this jersey. We need to find the solutions pretty quickly and be honest with ourselves because some good has to come from this. 'Of course we asked a lot of the players and maybe we put too much pressure on the side because it looked like we were a little disconnected at times. 'We'll review what we said we were going to do as a team. We need to make sure we get something positive from this because it's all about how we move forward. Advertisement 'Some players will be happy and some players won't and will be dying to get another chance out there. We've got to learn a lot of lessons from that. 'We want to see a better all round performance. There wasn't just one thing, it was the compounding of quite a few bits. 'The amount of balls that we threw blindly either on to the floor or to the opposition was a standout. 'The scraps on the floor always seemed to go to Argentina, so there was a bit more fight and hunger from them that we can't accept.' Advertisement Maro Itoje's first game as captain ended in defeat (Brian Lawless/PA) Maro Itoje criticised the Lions' accuracy as his first outing as captain ended in the tourists' first defeat to Argentina in eight matches.. 'It was a spectacular occasion. The fans gave us a glimpse of what to expect in Australia,' Itoje said. 'We gave ourselves numerous opportunities but we weren't accurate enough at times and weren't consistent enough in piling pressure on to Argentina.'

EXCLUSIVE New SAS series cast leaked as stars jet out to Morocco to film remake - but will Ant Middleton make a return to the reality show after he was cut from The Amazing Race?

The SAS franchise is in the midst of a major makeover, with a slew of stars now touching down in Morocco to begin filming the new season. Daily Mail Australia can reveal six 'Aussie celebrities' have secretly arrived in Marrakesh to film an 'all-new version' of the hit survival series. Dubbed SAS Hotel, the hush-hush series is said to be unlike anything fans have seen before. Described by insiders as part military boot camp, part luxury mind game, the series is slated to air in the UK first but could very well land on Channel Seven late next year. 'It's a wildcard version of SAS with a twist,' one well-placed source said. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'It's still brutal, still physically and mentally demanding but with an added psychological edge that really messes with the recruits. 'It's Who Dares Wins meets The White Lotus.' In a spicy twist, this elite showdown pits six Aussies against six Brits, with challenges designed to test national pride as much as endurance. Among the stars spotted arriving in Morocco are 'reality Queen' Jessika Power, singer and actress Natalie Bassingthwaighte, and Neighbours legend Ryan Maloney. All chosen for their recognisability in both the UK and Australia. 'There's a definite strategy here, everyone has to be a big name in both markets,' the insider reveals. 'It's all about building a format that can travel globally.' Jamie Marinos from this year's season of Married At First Sight was also reported to have turned down a spot on the show. She has confirmed the series would be outside the bounds of what her current contract with Channel Nine would allow. Questions have also swirled around the involvement of former SAS frontman Ant Middleton, who has helmed both the UK and Aussie versions of the show. While he was once the face of the franchise, his recent antics while filming The Amazing Race Australia may have tarnished his appeal. Brendan Fevola had Ant and his brother Dan disqualified from the Celebrity Edition of the show following an off-camera incident overseas. The drama unfolded during a day off from filming when Dan allegedly got into a heated argument with TikTok stars Luke and Scott O'Halloran. Dan reportedly yelled at the brothers and used inappropriate language late at night when most of the cast had already gone to bed. Ant was not directly involved in the incident but was disqualified along with his brother. Brendan, who was competing on the show with his daughter Leni, is reportedly said to have confronted Dan over the behaviour. He allegedly gave producers an ultimatum: remove the Middleton brothers or he and Leni would walk. Shortly after, Ant and Dan were sent home and cut from the series. SAS Hotel location sources say Ant has not appeared in Morocco and therefore it would be fair to say he is not a part of the project. Meanwhile, sightings of sports stars, TV personalities and actors from the UK have been seen coincidentally arriving on the same day. The official list will be announced in the coming weeks. Filming is expected to wrap in just four weeks, with stars returning home by August 2 – win or lose. And if SAS Hotel strikes a chord with British audiences, insiders say it could pave the way for a full SAS Australia revival - with a whole new look and feel. So, with the cat now officially out of the bag, the pressure is on for our Aussie celebs to fly the flag and survive whatever this mysterious SAS Hotel throws at them.
