Snow in South Africa isn't the norm, which is why it's so magical when it does happen. For a few weeks each winter – usually between June and August – the mountains and valleys in certain parts of the country are dusted with snow. If you're chasing that rare South African snow experience, skip the big cities. These six small towns pack the charm, scenery, and warm hospitality that make winter travel unforgettable…
Nestled at the foot of the Maluti Mountains, Clarens transforms into a snow-globe village when the flakes fall. The sandstone architecture, cosy cafes, and mountain views make it feel like a miniature alpine escape. Head into Golden Gate Highlands National Park for the best snowy backdrops, or just walk the art-filled town square with a hot chocolate in hand.

Rhodes is remote, rugged, and wild – exactly what makes it special. This Victorian-style village sits near the base of Naude's Nek Pass, South Africa's highest dirt road. In winter, snow often cuts off access entirely for days, creating a true winter retreat. Snowshoeing, log fires, and whiskey tastings are standard here.

Known for its stargazing, Sutherland is also one of the coldest places in South Africa, with snowfalls almost every winter. 'This is not just my story,' says Mayalo. 'It's a story for every young person who dreams of seeing the world, learning from it, and bringing something back to build their own communities.' The China–South Africa Youth Night is a symbolic event celebrating the growing ties between the two nations, and Mayalo's book will be one of its highlights. One person, who sent us a short video clip, said South African's favourite captain asked what he should order and a man suggested the chicken-schnitzel bagel. in the end, he got that and a bagel dog. This Sunday the Springboks will start their preparation in Cape Town for next Saturday's highly anticipated Qatar Airways Cup clash, where the Barbarians face the Springboks for the first time on South African soil. Kolisi will be in the city for this and likely spotted more around town making fans' days for them. The South African rugby hero was greeted with applause and shouts of praise from lunch-time diners at New York Bagel in the east part of the city shortly after midday today when he ran on to get a take away. 'People were cheering for him, and ululating. It really was something to see,' said another person. 'He is such a humble amazing man - a true hero." Kolisi just a day ago posted videos on his Tik Tok enjoying traditional African food including umngqusho with fellow Sharks player Aphelele Onke Okuhle Fassi in Johannesburg. The two were enjoying the home-style food at Zoo Lake's Sakhumzi restaurant . 'I'm in Jozi. I needed a little bit of African food. I just want to go home. Trotters, veggies and samp. Fasi what are you eating?' Kolisi said in the video. Fassi was enjoying some samp and tripe at the restaurant at the Zoo Lake.

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has unveiled a major infrastructure maintenance and expansion programme aimed at modernising and future-proofing the country's busiest airports. The ambitious upgrades are already underway across ACSA's nine airports, including OR Tambo, Cape Town, and King Shaka International. The wide-ranging initiative includes critical maintenance, safety enhancements, and major capital projects, with completion dates ranging from late 2025 to 2027. ACSA has prioritised essential infrastructure in its maintenance plan, including: Sewerage systems Ablution facilities (including accessible and baby-changing amenities) (including accessible and baby-changing amenities) Fire escapes Enhanced safety and hygiene protocols in high-traffic zones By way of example, at OR Tambo International Airport, one of the largest projects is the refurbishment of ablution facilities, which began in December 2024 and is set for completion by December 2025.
