Dash cam footage captures dramatic hit-and-run on I-85

Coweta County deputies are searching for the driver of a semi-truck who hit a motorist's car on Interstate-85 and knocked the vehicle off the road.
The accident was captured on driver Bill Eidson's dash camera, which shows the collision and his car skidding off the highway onto the shoulder.
Eidson was unhurt, but his car was totaled.
COWETA COUNTY, Ga. - Deputies are investigating a hit-and-run accident that knocked a driver's car off the interstate.
They say a truck driver fled that scene without helping or even calling 911.
What we know
Bill Eidson was heading home to Hogansville from Atlanta. He'd been at a corporate function when a semi-truck came up from behind and hit his car so hard that it sent him skidding off the highway. But that trucker kept going.
It was all captured on Eidson's dash cam in his car. The sound is Eidson's radio playing music and then a loud crunch and the squealing of his tires as his car careens off the roadway. The video shows the complete sequence of events.
"It was scary," he said. "At first I thought I had had a blowout because all I heard was a boom and a big crash." He says he didn't know until later that something had hit him and it was all recorded on his dash camera.
Eidson says his car, a 2017 Ford Fusion, is totaled. He was unhurt.
It happened on May 21, at around 9:15 p.m. Edison was traveling near the Collingsworth Road exit on Interstate 85.
An enhanced view of the rear-facing camera saw the cab of the truck, and it appeared there was no trailer. The blinker is on, suggesting the truck was changing lanes and the driver might not have seen Eidson's car.
Coweta County sheriff's deputies are working to identify the truck and driver. But they need the public's help. Despite the fact the accident was caught on camera, no view provides enough clarity to see identifying marks.
Luck was with Eidson though. He says he travels that road every day for work and the Georgia Department of Transportation had recently cleared trees on the I-85 shoulder at that exit. He might have gone head-on into a tree otherwise.

And what about those dash cameras? Eidson says it's worth it.
"The dash cam immediately notified my wife that I had been in a wreck and sent her a text message with the location as well as a link to the live feed," he said. "So yes, you should get a dash cam."

More than three years ago, 13-year-old Iran Moreno was playing video games in the bedroom of his Pasadena home when a bullet careened through the window and killed him. On Monday, police revealed new details in the unsolved murder case that they hope can help bring justice for the boy's tragic slaying. On Nov. 20, 2021, the driver of a gray Ford Fusion stopped in the parking lot across from Moreno's home on North Raymond Avenue, according to authorities. The passenger of the vehicle got out and fired two gunshots east, one of which hit Moreno. At the time, police said they didn't believe Moreno or his family were the targets of the gunfire. Newly enhanced surveillance video of the shooting revealed that part of the license plate number of the Ford Fusion was QJ117, according to a Pasadena Police Department post. The video also showed the shooter, who appeared to be a Black male between 33 and 37 years old, between 6'0' and 6'1' and 185 to 195 pounds, police said. He was wearing a red and black North Face hooded sweatshirt. Man shot by Dayton police during stolen vehicle investigation charged
Jun. 17—A man who was shot by a Dayton police officer after he reportedly attempted to block police from finding a stolen vehicle is facing charges. Rodney Smith Jr., 25, of Dayton was charged with two counts of having weapons while under disability in Montgomery County Municipal Court Western Division. The officer shot Smith on Thursday on Miller Avenue in Trotwood, just outside of Dayton, after he fled a truck with a Glock 19x in his hand. Dayton police were part of a joint violence deterrence initiative with Ohio State Highway Patrol's aviation unit Thursday and were looking for a stolen Ford Fusion when the shooting occurred. Just before the shooting, police learned the stolen car was near Olive Road and West Third Street. Police attempted a traffic stop, but the car fled, according to court records. OSHP's aviation unit tracked the Ford and gave Dayton police live updates on its location. While on Miller Avenue, the Ford rolled next to a pickup truck with a trailer attached. OSHP noted something may have been exchanged or thrown out of the Ford near the truck, according to court documents. "DPD officers encountered the truck as it appeared to back up in the road and caused the trailer to block the road," an affidavit read. Dayton police body camera footage released during a press conference Friday showed an officer exiting the cruiser with their gun drawn and tell Smith to exit the truck and show his hands multiple times. Court records said Smith tried to put the truck into gear, but it wasn't operating correctly. Smith got out of the truck and started running away from police. The officer is heard yelling that Smith has a gun as they briefly ran after Smith. The officer told him to drop the gun at least once before they shot him. Only one shot was fired, according to Dayton police Chief Kamran Afzal. "It appears, and again this is part of the criminal investigation, that he was shot right around the time as he's running with his handgun and looking back at the officer," Afzal said Friday. Officers began providing medical care and called medics to the scene. Smith was transported to the hospital and was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on Friday. The Glock was recovered and had 11 rounds with one in the chamber, according to police. Officers found the Ford in the middle of the road on Elkins Drive near Nathaniel Street. The driver, 29-year-old Heaven R. Shepherd, of Dayton, fled to a house in the 100 block of Pomeroy Avenue. A resident notified police Shepherd entered the house and shut the door, according to court records. The Ford's keys were found in a backyard Shepherd reportedly ran through. Police surrounded the house and ordered Shepherd come outside. She eventually came out and notified officers she consumed a large amount of narcotics and was overdosing, according to court records. She was taken to the hospital for treatment before being booked in the Montgomery County Jail. Shepherd is facing one count each of receiving stolen property, failure to comply and possession of a fentanyl-related compound. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is handling the criminal investigation. Once it's completed, the Dayton Police Department Professional Standards Bureau will conduct an administrative investigation.

Officials received calls of the pedestrian crash on I-94 near East Grand Boulevard around 2:50 a.m. Investigators say the man, from Ferndale, Michigan, lost control of the Ford Mustang he was driving. The incident resulted in the vehicle blocking a lane. Police say the man then got out of his vehicle. He was standing near the trunk of the Mustang when he was hit by a 39-year-old woman driving a Ford Fusion. The impact caused the man to go over a median wall. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. The woman, also from Ferndale, was not injured, police say. Neither person involved in the incident had a driver's license, according to police. "Unfortunately, this was another example of a driver involved in a crash and then standing in traffic," MSP Lt. Mike Shaw said. "Remember, if you are involved in a crash, just stay inside your vehicle, keep your seatbelt on and call 911."
