A vintage luxury car ravaged by fire stunned auction-goers by selling for $224,000 at the Amelia Island auctions, a striking reminder that in the collector car market, rarity often overrides condition.
The vehicle in question: a 1934 Hispano-Suiza J12 Vanvooren Cabriolet, now reduced to a scorched shell following a devastating trailer fire. Despite its damaged state, the rare prewar luxury car sparked fierce bidding before hammering for the six-figure sum, including buyer's premium.
Only about 120 examples of the Hispano-Suiza J12 were built between 1931 and 1938. The particular car sold was originally commissioned by French-Belgian industrialist Jean Empain and bodied by the famed coachbuilder Fernandez et Darrin. Empain used the car for cross-continental travel between Europe and Africa, and it eventually made its way to the United States after World War II.
Its most recent—and most notable—custodian was Sir Michael David Kadoorie, billionaire businessman and avid collector. Under Kadoorie's ownership, the J12 received a no-expense-spared restoration and was displayed at some of the world's most prestigious automotive events. It earned accolades at both the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and The Quail, including the Alec Ulmann Trophy in 2024 for its exquisite Vanvooren Cabriolet design.
The trailer fire that ultimately damaged the vehicle occurred sometime after its most recent public showing. While restoration of the fire-damaged Hispano-Suiza may be improbable, the car's historical pedigree and extreme rarity proved enough to warrant a serious investment from a determined buyer.
The sale underlines a truth long held in the collector community: some cars are simply too rare to ignore, no matter their condition.

Here's a fine-looking early BMW 5-series that checks a lot of boxes. It's not an M5, but it does feature an inline-six, a five-speed manual, and rear-wheel drive. It also boasts exceptionally low mileage and condition to match. The E28 BMW 5-series is mostly known as the debut of the BMW M5. That car is by now a legend, noted for its mighty 3.5-liter inline-six. If it's a racehorse, here's a car from the same bloodline that's a bit more domesticated, but still loves to trot. Bring a Trailer This 528i is the underlying sports sedan that made the first M5 so good, and this 1982 model up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos) looks to be an exceptional example of the breed. Sold new in France, it's got an M30 2.8-liter inline-six with higher compression than what we received in the U.S.—mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. It also sports the crisply elegant European bumpers rather than the overlarge U.S. units. And its 15K kilometers on the odometer translates to a freakishly low U.S. equivalent of less than 10,000 miles. Ooh, and those French selective yellow headlights, that's a nice touch. They've gone through the engine bay and cabin and removed any aftermarket parts, for instance replacing the Kenwood door speakers with factory BMW units. There is no A/C, but the seller is throwing in a factory A/C system from another car, which the new owner could have installed. Courtesy: Bring a Trailer The 5-series of this generation is such a overlooked machine, one that puts the spirit of the original 2002tii into a discreet business suit. The 2.8-liter inline-six produces a plentiful 170 horsepower, and it loves to rev. An E28 is tiny next to a modern 5-series, and the experience of hurrying it down a two-lane road while looking out through that expansive greenhouse is a wonderful one. Courtesy: Bring a Trailer The very low mileage does mean that this car is something to be reserved for special occasions, but it should be faithful even if it sits around a bit. These are far simpler and more durable cars than electronics-heavy later Bimmers, and that inline-six doesn't have the valve adjustment schedule of the M5's motor. This is the best of Bavaria, and with no reserve, it's going home with a new owner. The auction ends on June 25. An elderly man's wrong turn down a famous Italian landmark led to his vehicle being craned away. An 80-year-old man on his way to work mistakenly drove his Mercedes-Benz sedan down Rome's famous Spanish Steps in the early morning June 17, Italian media reports show. Video captured the driver slowly navigating down the historic stairs before getting stuck as well as the audio reaction of bystanders in disbelief. Police said the man exited the vehicle uninjured and firefighters used a crane to remove the vehicle from the steps, Italian outlet Il Corriere della Sera reported. Public access to the Spanish Steps was temporarily restricted while experts with the Ministry of Culture examined the extent of damage caused by the driver, according to CBS News. Was the driver under the influence? Upon being taken to a local hospital, the man tested negative for both alcohol and drug consumption, CNN reported citing city police. However officers said the driver appeared to be in a state of confusion, according to Il Corriere della Sera. He reportedly had a valid driver's license. The peculiar moment wasn't the first time a vehicle drove through the historic landmark. In 2022, a Saudi man was charged with aggravated damage to cultural heritage after footage captured a Maserati driving down the same steps. What are the Spanish Steps? Build between 1723 and 1726, the Spanish Steps lead from the iconic Piazza di Spagna square to the French monastery church Trinita dei Monti, according to Rome's tourist site. The landmark features 135 total steps as well as three different terraces that reference the Holy Trinity or the Trinità. Tourists often visit the top of the stairs for a scenic view of Rome.

PRESS RELEASE June 20, 2025 The European Space Agency and Dassault Aviation paving the way for potential collaborations ESA and Dassault Aviation have identified a mutual interest in developing a closer relationship to commonly foster technology development in areas such as LEO destinations and particularly around orbital vehicules. The European Space Agency (ESA) has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Dassault Aviation, a French civilian and military aircraft manufacturer recognized worldwide for its excellence, underlying their common interest to develop a closer relationship. ESA, with its ambitious strategy for space exploration, Explore2040, is seeking innovative solutions for capabilities development to reach and return from Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Moon and Mars, and supports the advancement of selected critical enabling technologies to be used and demonstrated in particular in LEO, such as hypervelocity re-entry. Dassault Aviation, also a leader in aerospace engineering, is developing its space activities with a focus on the design of a reusable spaceplane based on lifting bodies shapes that bridge aeronautical and space technologies. Their interest in automated LEO platforms suitable for commercial and institutional markets, led them to develop a vehicle concept called ' Véhicule Orbital Réutilisable de Transport et d'Exploration (VORTEX) ', designed for research in space, transport of cargo to and from space stations, and a range of in-orbit services. This project is based on a considerable expertise in spaceplanes having participated in numerous programmes like Hermes, NASA X-38 Crew Rescue vehicle, ESA Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle (IXV) demonstrator, and Airborne Reusable Hypersonic Experimental Vehicle (VEHRA) concepts. As such, both foresee an interest to cooperate on a scaled down suborbital version of VORTEX, serving as a testbed, with a focus on, but not limited to: Designing, testing and qualifying key technologies and components. This joint work will be based on exchanging relevant information and conducting studies or preparatory activities, to help establish respective roles and responsibilities in the realisation of potential joint activities, leveraging on each side's capabilities.
