Sharks Should Target Auston Matthews, If He's Available

Yahoo21-05-2025

The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to make some massive changes this summer, and while Mitchell Marner and John Tavares are expected to test the open market, Auston Matthews is another potential trade target. In a recent article from Daily Faceoff, the idea of them trading Matthews was released, and the San Jose Sharks should be all over him.
Matthews, who is 27 years old, is one of, if not the best, goal scorers in the NHL today. This season, he scored 33 goals and added 45 assists for 78 points through 67 games. In the previous campaign during the 2023-24 season, he had an incredibly impressive 69-goal campaign. He dealt with some injuries this season, which may have lessened his production, so if he is fully healthy next season, he could bounce back.
Matthews has a $13.25 million cap hit and has a full no-movement clause (NMC), which gives him full power over whether he gets traded or not. In the rare case he's open to a move, and would consider the Sharks as a destination, they should be willing to put plenty of assets toward bringing him in.
Bringing in an elite goal scorer like Matthews could elevate the Sharks from rebuilder to contender almost immediately. Placing him alongside Macklin Celebrini could also elevate Celebrini's game in a big way moving forward. It would be tough to convince Matthews to join a rebuilding team, but if the Maple Leafs are truly going for a complete retool, he may not want to stick around.
Are The Sharks A Potential Landing Spot For Maple Leafs' Mitch Marner? The Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in a tough situation. Their star forward Mitch Marner appears to be on the way out, after being very non-committal about returning to the organization following yet another early playoff exit.

Brisbane storm home to bite Sharks, with Walsh on fire

Brisbane have stormed home from a 16-point deficit to beat a wasteful Cronulla 34-28, with fullback Reece Walsh igniting the comeback. When Sharks hooker Blayke Brailey darted over from dummy half to secure a 28-12 lead in the 56th minute, the Broncos appeared cooked in front of 39,042 fans at Suncorp Stadium. Instead the Broncos scored four tries in 18 minutes, with Walsh setting up two, to usurp the Sharks in fifth position. Sharks forward Teig Wilton went to hospital in the first half after suffering blurred vision from an eye injury, before winger Sione Katoa had a brain explosion on the cusp of halftime. He was sin-binned for a ridiculous touch on Ezra Mam when he was laying in the ruck. The Broncos were too daft to make the most of it. Instead Brailey darted over from close range and the result appeared secured, but the Sharks then fell apart. Winger Ronaldo Mulitalo was ruled to have knocked on and Walsh made the Sharks pay with a bullet pass to centre Gehamat Shibasaki. Sharks five-eighth Braydon Trindall kicked out on the full and Broncos winger Josiah Karapani stormed in despite Sharks half Nicho Hynes falling over and claiming an obstruction. Skipper Adam Reynolds then darted and weaved in traffic and threw a basketball-style pass for Karapani to score his second try double in as many weeks. Reynolds landed it from the sideline for a 30-28 lead. When Walsh carved through Hynes to set up Shibasaki for his second, it was all over. The first half was a bizarre affair, with the Sharks leading 22-12 at the break. Brisbane's kicking game and line speed were poor, with fullback Walsh giving up two seven-tackle sets. The Sharks attacked with freedom, halves Trindall and Hynes both playing leading roles. Trindall laid on the pass for centre Siosifa Talakai to score. He was at it again to put Wilton through a gaping hole, and fullback William Kennedy finished it off for a 10-0 lead. The Sharks opened the scoring through Talakai after Broncos winger Jesse Arthars spilt a bomb. Kennedy scored his second with a classic after Hynes sent second-rower Briton Nikora on his merry way. Trindall did the same for Hynes to stroll through for a 22-6 lead after Broncos hooker Cory Paix darted over from dummy half for the softest try you will ever see. Mam scored on the cusp of halftime to keep the home side in it.

Could Mitch Marner Wind Up With The Rangers?

We all know that the Rangers need help and we all know that Mitch Marner will bolt Toronto as a free agent faster than you can say money talks or pennies from Heaven. (Well, he's not gonna be THAT free.) And since one and one make three in some hockey agents' offices, how about Mitch Marner bolting for MSG. He'd look good in a blue shirt. Advertisement With that in mind, I contacted my crack Toronto Maple Leafs reporter Mark Nussbaum for his insights re Marner in Manhattan. "There's going to be a lineup for Mitch's services on July first," says Nussbaum. "On paper, the Rangers could use him. He's a premier two-way forward and a top-notch playmaker. He could fit well in New York – BUT. "The Rangers' problem is Cap Space of which they have $15 million and Marner is looking for a contract north of $14 million. Chris Drury will have to pass on Mitch because his team has so many other holes to fill and will need money to fill them." And so ends the Mitch Marner as Ranger Saga. (Memo to all Rangers Faithful: You are allowed to dream about Marner as a New Yorker, but it will turn into a nightmare!
