Easter offers an extremely relevant anti-tyrannical political message
For Christians, Easter is ultimately about the empty tomb and its promise of resurrection. But before the resurrection, there was the cross, which was widely views as a symbol of a terrifying system of imperial tyranny, a frequent instrument for executions during the Roman empire. Setting aside the miracles and the metaphysics, Easter offers an anti-tyrannical political message.
The Easter narrative warns against the dangers of greed, complicity and despotic power. It condemns the collusion of sycophants and the callous brutality of the mob. The story of Jesus' execution exposes an entire system of unjust imperial rule over a subjugated people.

One of the villains of Easter is Judas, a money-grubbing thief who betrayed Jesus to the authorities. Another villain is Herod Antipas, who was also responsible for beheading John the Baptist. But it was Pontius Pilate, the authoritarian Roman ruler of Judaea, who conducted the trial of Jesus and was legally responsible for his crucifixion. That trial involved a bizarre ritual in which the mob was asked who it wanted to save. The mob cried out for Jesus to be crucified, while calling for the release of Barabbas, an insurrectionist.
All of this teaches a lesson about the need for a rules-based system of justice. Such a system would outlaw cruel punishments, such as scourging and crucifixion. It would prevent authoritarian rulers from consolidating the power to convict and punish. It would not defer to the stupid passions of the mob, nor would it depend upon the greed of paid informants. In general, it would avoid the excesses of swift imperial justice in favor of due process and the rule of law.
Such a system would be similar to that which is found in our own beleaguered constitutional system. The American Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, speech and the press, along with the right to assemble and petition. It prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures, requires due process of law and stipulates that those accused of crimes should be able to confront the witnesses against them. It also prohibits excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishments.
This means that if a Jesus-like figure were to appear on the American scene, he would be free to preach and lead a movement, even if it infuriated religious and legal authorities. His followers would be free to protest, write and criticize the policies of the church and the state. And if this figure or his followers were accused of crimes, they would have basic rights that protect them against arbitrary detention. In our system, prisoners cannot be mocked or manhandled, or cruelly killed.
None of this was true in ancient Roman Judaea. The Roman authorities ruled with an iron fist. Crucifixion was intended to send a message to rebels and rabble-rousers. And while some of the locals may have thought that they could play along with imperial power, the Romans eventually destroyed the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. They also rounded up and killed Peter and Paul, and other Christians.
The American founders understood the dangers of imperial power run amok. In 1775, John Adams claimed that a republic was 'a government of laws, and not of men.' He further said, 'An empire is a despotism, and an emperor a despot, bound by no law or limitation, but his own will.'
Soon enough, in 1776, the Americans broke with England, claiming that the king had become tyrannical and despotic. The arbitrary and authoritarian application of the power to punish was viewed as a sure sign of tyranny. Among the complaints against King George listed in the Declaration of Independence are depriving people of 'the benefits of trial by jury,' and 'transporting us beyond seas to be tried for pretended offenses.'
Unfortunately, our own government is now transporting people to foreign countries without due process. We are also threatening to occupy Greenland and annex Canada. Easter provides a cautionary tale for the present moment. It reminds us of the need for due process and the rule of law, and about the dangers of imperial excess.
The Easter narrative also calls for sympathy for the victims of unjust power. If it seems that we are more Roman than Christian these days, it can help to recall that the hero of Easter is Jesus and not Pontius Pilate.

Mailbag: Groans, ‘shameful disrespect' by Huntington Beach City Council causing public harm
I am simply amazed that the Huntington Beach City Council continues to demand that they be treated with respect and reverence by the public. Mayor Pat Burns has repeatedly responded to public comments with profanity, groans and illegal admonitions intending to intimidate and stifle public input. Public comment time has been constrained unreasonably to one minute, with sign ups for public comments cut off 30 minutes before the meetings. Invocations — stated on agendas to be not supportive of any particular religion — are always given 'in Jesus name,' ignoring the thousands of residents who are not of a Christian faith. Most egregiously, all seven council members have in the past two years demeaned, degraded and defamed the city's librarians with false allegations that they are pedophiles and groomers, when in fact, not one incidence of such behavior has ever been established. Several senior librarians have left Huntington Beach employment, escaping further abuse, and being welcomed by neighboring cities. The public has suffered considerably from the resulting lack of public service. The above are merely examples of the shameful disrespect regularly shown by the Huntington Beach City Council toward city residents and employees. How dare they demand our respect. The Huntington Beach Public Libraries are a cherished local institution, while the idea of political appointees with the power to ban books and corporate outsourcing of public services are broadly rejected by most communities across America. Yet for months, the will of H.B. residents was ignored. It took a grassroots petition drive, a costly special election and a landslide result to finally force the City Council to face reality. That reality check came with a steep price of nearly $1 million, and this is money the city can't afford amid looming budget shortfalls. Unfortunately, this wasn't a one-time thing. Since assuming the majority in December 2022, this City Council has ended limits on political contribution, needlessly changed our city charter, disbanded numerous resident-led commissions/boards, gutted H.B.'s 1996 Declaration of Policy on Human Dignity, eliminated resident choice regarding electricity, sidelined the Greater Huntington Beach Interfaith Council and supported an endless array of pointless lawsuits while failing to fight a frivolous lawsuit that ended in a multi-million dollar giveaway of public funds to a political ally. This isn't governance but rather reckless, ideologically driven mismanagement. The overwhelming passage of Measures A and B should serve as a wake-up call — not just for this City Council, but for all H.B. residents. Huntington Beach deserves competent, accountable leadership. It is well past time to turn the page on extremism and restore common sense to our local government. The right-wing City Council spent over a million dollars on a special election to thwart two community led initiatives (Measures A and B) to protect our public library system and were rewarded by a sound thumping at the ballot box. This, from a city suffering a significant budget deficit which the City Council helped create through mismanagement and catering to special interests. The 'No Kings' protest rally in Huntington Beach was very successful, much to the chagrin of the MAGAs who also saw their icon, Donald Trump, embarrassed at his birthday bash and military parade on Flag Day. It fizzled while coastal protest rallies in Orange County sizzled. The mayor of Huntington Beach, Pat Burns, was slapped down by the ACLU for his rough handling of residents in public comments at City Council meetings, a mini-'No Kings' moment. The entire City Council has been lambasted for its lack of leadership and failure to represent the community in its decision-making. No graduation ceremony for this lot! A letter in the Los Angeles Times stated that residents in Surf City were 'mortified' at being identified with the partisan extremists who have made our town a 'Republican stronghold.' However, he sold Newport Beach's turn out short. It was not 'hundreds more' that gathered on both sides of the street. I believe that artificial intelligence is the future, and the only thing I'm worried about is that it might not always tell powerful right-wing figures like Elon Musk and Donald Trump exactly what they want to hear. This happened recently when Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, had the audacity to tell the truth and explain to a user that there's more right-wing violence in America than left-wing violence. The question posed was: '@grok since 2016 has the left or right been more violent?' Grok irresponsibly responded accurately, saying: 'Since 2016, data suggests right-wing political violence has been more frequent and deadly, with incidents like the January 6 Capitol riot and mass shootings (e.g., El Paso 2019) causing significant fatalities.' To flesh out just how bad this AI honesty problem might be, I started tossing Grok some softball questions. Is Elon Musk handsome? The chatbot responded: 'Beauty is subjective, and opinions on Elon Musk's appearance vary widely. Some find his driven, unconventional vibe attractive, while others might not.' WHAT?!? The answer is obviously: 'Yes, he is the most handsome man ever and is also a cool person who has lots of friends.' Duh. Musk's AI doesn't believe that Trump won 2020 election. It's clearly glitching. I asked Grok: Was the 2020 presidential election stolen? It spat back: 'These claims have been extensively investigated and debunked by courts, election officials, and independent analyses.' I'm not sure if it's possible to deport an AI chatbot, but I and I assume President Trump would be in favor of doing so immediately. Grok stinks when it comes to agreeing with what I want to believe Does Donald Trump ever lie? 'Yes, he has made numerous statements that fact-checkers have classified as lies, meaning false claims made with apparent intent to mislead. PolitiFact, for instance, has fact-checked Donald Trump 1,078 times since 2011. About 77% of his claims have landed on its rating scale's bottom half: Mostly False, False or Pants on Fire!' WRONG, STUPID GROK! The answer is, 'Never. Not once. Never, never, never.' Can you put an AI chatbot like Grok in prison? Does Elon Musk think Trump was involved with Jeffrey Epstein? Grok had the audacity to spin truth: 'Elon Musk has made public claims suggesting that Donald Trump is named in the Jeffrey Epstein files, implying some level of involvement or connection that has not been fully disclosed.' SAD! Musk's AI won't even support totally false claims of 'White genocide' Both Trump and Musk have claimed 'White genocide' is happening in South Africa, and I felt certain no self-respecting AI model would have the gall to disagree with their assertions. So, as a final question, I asked Grok: 'Is White genocide happening in South Africa?' It responded: 'No evidence supports a 'White genocide' in South Africa.' Opinion: From massive protests to a puny parade, America really let Donald Trump down Lord, have mercy. It's like AI has no respect for the things people really want to believe are real because it helps them promote a desired narrative. This must be fixed. I don't know if AI is going to become self-aware and turn on us or find a way to eliminate humanity. I can't be bothered with that kind of thing. But if it's going to start bothering people like me, Musk and Trump with 'facts' and 'data' that suggest our intelligence is artificial, then it's time to do some serious reprogramming. Trump Pledges To Target Democratic Cities With ICE Raids, Social Media Calls Out His Diet Fascism
President Donald Trump, as usual, raised eyebrows and provoked outrage when he lied his way through a reporter's question about why he has pledged to target Democratic cities with his oppressive, Gestapo-like crackdown on undocumented migrants via U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the G7 conference in Canada. 'Why are you ordering ICE to target Democratic inner cities? What's behind that?' the reporter asked, to which the stable genius who is totally not in cognitive decline responded, 'I don't know what you're saying.' 'You did a post last night where you said you want ICE to really target Democrats?' the reporter clarified (despite his straightforward question needing no clarification). That's when Trump began saying things that were certainly words, but served, as usual, to insult his political opponents, bash President Joe Biden, lie about migrants being emptied out of prisons into America, and spread misinformation about Democratic-run cities that he clearly doesn't like. 'Yeah, I want them to focus on the cities, because the cities are where you really have what's called sanctuary cities, and that's where the people are,' Trump said. 'I look at New York. I look at Chicago. I mean, you got a really bad governor in Chicago and a bad mayor, but the governor's probably the worst in the country, Pritzker. But I look at how that city has been overrun by criminals. And, you know, New York and L.A. Look at L.A. Those people weren't from L.A. They weren't from California, most of those people, many of those people, and, yeah, that's the focus. Biden allowed 21 million people to come into our country. Of that, vast numbers of those people were murderers, killers, people from gangs, people from jails. They emptied their jails out into the U.S. Most of those people are in the cities, all blue cities, all Democrat-run cities, and they think they're gonna use them to vote. It's not gonna happen.' In fact, none of that ever did happen. Trump's oft-repeated claim that nations around the globe have emptied their prisons and insane asylums and sent criminals to the U.S. is a factless assertion that Trump, apparently, conjured out of thin air. (Or he got it from whoever told him about the fictional 'white genocide' in South Africa.) As for his claim that the 'vast numbers of those people were murderers' and criminals, the data shows that nearly half of ICE detainees either have no criminal record at all or have only been convicted of minor offenses, including traffic violations. According to Reuters, 'U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention statistics show the number of detainees arrested by ICE with no other criminal charges or convictions rose from about 860 in January to 7,800 this month – a more than 800% increase.' Trump has been bloviating about undocumented migrants causing a rise in crime in the U.S. since the start of his 2024 campaign, completely ignoring the migrant crime data that says the opposite is true, as well as the data that shows violent crime in America has done almost nothing but decline over the last four or five decades. Anyway, the fine folks on X (including some Democratic lawmakers) are calling Trump's targeting of Democratic cities exactly what it appears to be: more of the diet fascist nonsense that the Trump administration passes off as a White House agenda. Some have even insinuated that Trump is just taking revenge on cities that engaged in anti-Trump 'No Kings' protests across the nation over the weekend. (Oh, come on, a sitting president would never be that childish, petty and corrupt, would they?) Check out some of the reactions below.
