Woman killed in Boom Island Park shooting is identified originally appeared on Bring Me The News.
The woman killed when gunfire erupted during a large gathering at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis on Sunday evening has been identified.
Stageina Whiting, 23, of Brooklyn Center, died at Hennepin County Medical Center from a gunshot wound to the torso, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed.
Police arrived at the park around 9:30 p.m. to find Whiting severely injured after an altercation at the park escalated to a shooting.
Six other people were injured in the incident, with five men shot – one of whom is in a life-threatening condition – and a woman knocked unconscious.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara likened the aftermath of the shooting to a "war zone" due to the number of shell casings found at the scene. Police believe there was more than one shooter involved, but no arrests have been made as of Monday evening.
The incident has been denounced as "completely unacceptable" by Mayor Jacob Frey, who said: "My heart is with the victims and their loved ones today.
"This week, we're launching Operation Safe Summer – a coordinated effort with law enforcement partners at every level to prevent violence and keep people safe. We're going to keep working with our partners to keep incidents like this rare."
Third District Rep. Ilhan Omar said: "I'm devastated by the tragic shooting at Boom Island Park last night. My heart is with the victims, their families, and all those who were at the park during such a terrifying moment. Our community should feel safe in parks and public spaces no matter the time of day."

Walz puts Minnesota on alert after U.S. strikes in Iran; Homeland Security issues bulletin

Walz puts Minnesota on alert after U.S. strikes in Iran; Homeland Security issues bulletin originally appeared on Bring Me The News. In a precautionary move, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz placed all state authorities on heightened alert in the event that Iran retaliates following the U.S. bombing of three Iranian nuclear facilities on Saturday night. "Following the President's decision to bomb nuclear facilities in Iran, I've directed our public safety teams to be on heightened alert for potential threats to Minnesota," Walz announced. "While there's no known threats at this time, we'll continue to monitor the situation and respond accordingly." Homeland Security issued a bulletin through the National Terrorism Advisory System on Sunday, saying the conflict in Iran "is causing a heightened threat environment in the United States, adding that cyber attacks by "pro-Iranian hacktivists" are likely and that the Iranian government could also attempt cyber attacks "against US networks." "The likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets in the Homeland," the alert reads. "Multiple recent Homeland terrorist attacks have been motivated by anti-Semitic or anti-Israel sentiment, and the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict could contribute to US-based individuals plotting additional attacks." Homeland Security also says violent extremists could be motivated to attack "targets perceived to be Jewish, pro-Israel, or linked to the US government or military" in the United States On Meet The Press Sunday morning, Vice President JD Vance said the U.S. is ready if Iran retaliates. "We're prepared in the event the that the Iranians do retaliate, but my message to the Iranians is that it would be the stupidest thing in the world if they did," Vance said. "If the Iranians want to enlarge this by attacking American troops, I think that would be a catastrophic mistake and as the President said last night, the Iranians would be met with overwhelming force beyond that. This is a very delicate moment, I don't want to pretend that it's not." As Walz said, there are no known threats in Minnesota at this time. With community support, iconic popcorn wagon returning to Madelia

With community support, iconic popcorn wagon returning to Madelia originally appeared on Bring Me The News. A beloved popcorn wagon that served downtown Madelia for more than 60 years is making a return. Spearheaded by Madelia resident Ryan Visher, owner of Hope and Faith Floral & Gifts, the popcorn wagon will be restored and begin operating again with the help of community donations. The wagon was originally operated by Ruth Allen, who sold popcorn in downtown Madelia for decades, according to the Mankato Free Press. Visher, who has launched a GoFundMe to help pay for the van's rehabilitation and transportation to Minnesota, has been documenting the wagon's journey from Wyoming. "We are restoring the nostalgic wagon and will be offering popcorn, candy, and other treats in the same wagon that was on our Main Street for over 60 years,' a GoFundMe reads. 'The last owner is selling it to us, but we have to bring it back from Wyoming and want to restore it to its original state.' The GoFundMe has raised around $4,700 of its $5,000 goal. Since it returned back to Minnesota, Visher has been receiving assistance from local businesses to restore the wagon to its former glory. Hope and Faith anticipates the wagon to make its debut at the city's Park Days, which runs from July 12 to July 14.
