Online scams cost 302 Pahang Govt retirees over RM20mil since 2022
KUANTAN: Over the past three years, from 2022 to 2024, online scams have cost retired civil servants in Pahang more than RM20mil, affecting 302 individuals, the Pahang legislative assembly was told Tuesday.
State Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Sim Chon Siang said that in 2022, 85 retirees were scammed, incurring losses of more than RM8.9mil.
In 2023, 102 retirees were duped, with losses totalling RM3.7mil, while in 2024, 115 victims recorded losses amounting to RM8.9mil.
"Over the same period, 5,658 other individuals were also targeted in online scams, with total losses reaching RM120mil,' he said during the assembly sitting at Wisma Sri Pahang.
He was responding to a question from appointed assemblyman Datuk Wong Tat Chee, who asked how many people in Pahang had fallen victim to online scams in the past three years, and the total losses involving retired civil servants.
Meanwhile, State Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Biotechnology and Education Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Soffi Abd Razak, said the state government has implemented the Pahang Hybrid School Pilot Project in six schools under the Education Ministry's Digital Education Policy.
He said each school was allocated five classrooms, bringing the total number of classrooms involved to 30.
The schools selected for the pilot project are Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Abdul Rahman Talib and SMK Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom in Kuantan, SMK Seri Jengka (Maran), SMK Padang Saujana (Jerantut), SMK Sulaiman (Bentong) and SMK Agama Kuala Lipis (Lipis).
He was addressing Datuk Mustapa Long (BN-Padang Tengku), who asked for the list of schools and the number of classrooms involved in the pilot phase of the Digital Education Policy, as well as the sources of funding to support the initiative.
Mohd Soffi added that the pilot project also includes SMK RPS Betau in Lipis, a Kampung Angkat Madani school, which has been allocated two classrooms. - Bernama

PETALING JAYA: SD Guthrie Bhd and Sime Darby Property Bhd (SDP) have signed a joint venture agreement to develop up to 2,000 acres of land on Carey Island, Selangor, to support sustainable economic growth and innovation. The 2,000 acre site on Carey Island provides the scalability required for world-class logistics facilities, integrated supply chains and high-value industrial developments, required to attract global players and investments. The port will thus be well positioned to compete with ports in Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, giving a boost to Malaysia's aspirations to become a logistics powerhouse in the region. Today, Carey Island is celebrated for its fully integrated oil palm plantation, the last one of its kind in the Greater Klang Valley. It is an important location for the Malaysian plantation industry and is used frequently to host visitors from around the world, including foreign government delegations, ambassadors, research and development (R&D) institutions and universities. SD Guthrie operates two estates and palm oil mills on the island, all of which are certified to the highest sustainability standards in the world. Also on the island are a kernel crushing plant, biodiesel plant, R&D facilities, robotics and innovation centre and nursery. Palm oil produced in Carey Island is processed in two large refineries located nearby in Langat and Port Klang, which serve customers from around the world. There are also 14 historical buildings on Carey Island that are listed as heritage sites by the National Heritage Department, a large biodiversity park and sensitive mangrove ecosystems that are maintained by SD Guthrie. Terengganu plans QR code law to control roaming livestock
KUALA BERANG: The Terengganu government plans to introduce a new enactment requiring livestock owners to tag their animals with quick response (QR) codes. State Agriculture, Agro-Based Industry, Food Security and Commodities Committee chairman Datuk Dr Azman Ibrahim said the move was aimed at addressing the issue of roaming livestock, which posed safety risks to road users and caused damage to public infrastructure. He said the QR codes would enable the authorities to quickly identify the owners and take legal action as a deterrent. 'We are taking a serious look at the need for a Ruminant Livestock Control Enactment to regulate livestock activities. 'Currently, we only have local authority (PBT) by-laws which allow livestock to be captured and auctioned, but that's all. We need strict laws to deal with a problem that has been going on for decades,' he said at the Fish Fry Release Programme and the Presentation of Aquaculture Input Incentives in Kampung Temir here today. Meanwhile, Dr Azman said that approximately 346,000 fish and shrimp fry, including freshwater species such as baung, lampam, and kelah, would be released into Terengganu waters this year using allocations from the state government. In addition, he said a total of 596,000 fish fry were released into Sungai Kemaman, Sungai Ibai and Tasik Kenyir from January to June 15, using funds provided by the federal government. 'To boost fishery resources, the state government will begin placing 94 artificial reefs in Terengganu waters starting tomorrow in Pulau Redang. 'The programme introduced several years ago is starting to show positive outcomes, as fish landings continue to increase each year,' he said.
