Kendrapada: Police arrested a 21-year-old man on Friday on the charges of raping and assaulting a 50-year-old yoga teacher of a public health centre in Kendrapada district.
The accused entered the rented house of the woman by breaking open a door on the terrace on Wednesday night and raped her, police said.
The crime came to light after the survivor filed an FIR on Thursday. She alleged she was raped by the accused at knife point. The accused also threatened to kill the woman if she told anyone about the incident. The accused also assaulted her.
Acting on the FIR, police arrested the accused on Friday under sections 64(2)(M) (rape), 331(4) (house trespass) and 118(1) (grievous hurt by dangerous weapon) of BNS. Both the woman and the accused underwent medical examination, police said.

Delhi Police have arrested five people in separate operations for their alleged involvement in cyber fraud networks linked to Chinese operatives, officials said on Friday. The police investigation revealed that the accused persons were in contact with Chinese nationals through Telegram channels and groups. (Representational Image/pexel) According to officials, the North-West District Cyber Police Station solved a cheating case involving two accused, Pawan and Mankiraat Dhillon, who allegedly duped a victim of ₹ 21 lakh under the pretext of offering lucrative returns from share market investments. The accused lured the victim through a fake investment application that mimicked the interface of a legitimate brokerage platform, showing fabricated profits, losses, and investment details. The victim transferred the entire amount in three separate transactions to bank accounts shared by the fraudsters, who maintained contact via Telegram and WhatsApp, they said. The police investigation revealed that the accused persons were in contact with Chinese nationals through Telegram channels and groups. They procured bank accounts from individuals in their surroundings and supplied them to the Chinese nationals on a commission basis via Telegram. The accused persons were arrested from their hideout in Mohali, Punjab, and several incriminating items, including ATM cards, cheque books, passbooks, SIM cards linked to bank accounts, and mobile handsets used in the fraud, were recovered. According to the press note, the police also recovered evidence of the accused persons' travel to Nepal, where they received the cheated amount in the alleged bank account facilitated by their foreign associates. Hotel bills from Nepal and air tickets related to their travel were also recovered. In a separate incident, the Cyber Police Station, South-West District, has busted a sophisticated interstate cyber fraud syndicate, which was operating across states and channelling cheated money to China via USDT and cryptocurrency platforms. Three accused persons, Mahender Singh Rajawat, Ariph Khan, and Laxmi Narayan Vaishy, all residents of Jaipur, Rajasthan, have been arrested, and six smartphones used in the commission of cyber fraud have been seized, they said. The case stems from a complaint lodged by K Kant, who was contacted via WhatsApp and Telegram with a proposition to earn money by posting positive reviews for hotels and restaurants online. Initially, the complainant received small payments for such tasks. However, he was soon deceived into transferring over ₹ 15.8 lakh under various false pretences such as "welfare tasks," "account unfreezing," and "credit score improvement." Consequently, a case FIR U/s 318(4)/61(2) of BNS was registered at Cyber PS South-West District, and an investigation was initiated. As per the press note, though the complainant had deleted the WhatsApp number and the fraudulent link, the team conducted a detailed technical analysis and tracked the money trail, leading to multiple raids in Jaipur, Ajmer, and nearby regions. Accused Mahender Singh Rajawat was the first to be apprehended. Though he initially tried to mislead the team but thorough interrogation revealed the identities and roles of co-accused Ariph Khan and Laxmi Narayan Vaishy. Multiple raids were carried out at their hideouts, and both Ariph Khan and Laxmi Narayan Vaishy were apprehended. The investigation revealed that the accused persons were in direct contact with a Chinese national operating via Telegram from outside India. They provided multiple bank accounts for laundering proceeds of crime, and the stolen money was deposited into these accounts, withdrawn within 20 minutes, and converted to USDT (cryptocurrency), they added.

Firing at club in Bestech Mall: Mohali police recover illegal weapon used in crime
A day after a firing incident took place at Bestech Mall, Sector 66, police recovered a .32 bore pistol from the accused arrested in the wee hours of Thursday. An FIR was registered under Sections 109, 351(3), 126(2), 190, 191 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act in the club firing incident at Bestech Mall, Mohali. The footage captures a group of five individuals dragging Akashdeep, dressed in a white shirt, out of the club and physically assaulting him. At around 1.15 am, another man, Siddharth, wearing a blue shirt, stepped in to intervene. One of the assailants, wearing a black T-shirt, drew a pistol and fired at Siddharth, striking him in the lower abdomen. After the bullet was fired, Siddharth collapsed to the ground from the impact. Moments later, with the help of his friends, he managed to stand up and was able to walk a short shooter and his accomplices fled the scene immediately after the shot was fired. Over 20 people, including several women, were present at the site when the incident occurred. The complainant, Akashdeep, confirmed that the man in the white shirt was him. When he talked about Siddharth's condition, he stated, 'he is stable now and will get discharged in four to five days.' Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Harsimran Bal confirmed the arrests, stating, 'The accused have been arrested with the illegal weapon used in the incident. Eight teams were formed under the supervision of Phase 11 SHO, inspector Aman and in charge Harminder Singh. Both accused were rounded up within 24 hours of the incident. The pistol used has been recovered and both are now in police remand. Our team will interrogate them thoroughly.' An FIR against all accused was registered under Sections 109, 351(3), 126(2), 190, 191 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the remaining accused. The firing incident had occurred following a brawl that broke out at The Skull Club inside Bestech Mall. Akashdeep, a visitor from Ganganagar, was partying at the club with his friends, including Siddharth. According to the complaint, an argument erupted between Akashdeep's group and the co-owners of the club after a minor altercation on the dance floor. The situation escalated and moved outside the club, where the fight turned violent.

Ludhiana: No headway in Maharashtra man's murder case
Failing to make a breakthrough in a Maharashtra-based devotee's murder a year ago, the police have released the pictures of some of the suspects wanted by the Jagraon police for allegedly poisoning him. The man was found dead during a religious event held in Jagraon in August 2024. However, the Jagraon City police station took five months to register an FIR, that too on the orders of Punjab and Haryana high court. On August 26, 2024, Gurusharanjeet Singh of Nagpur, Maharashtra, and his wife Kawaljeet Kaur had visited a religious site in Jagraon to pay obeisance. At the site, three unknown individuals offered them juice packets as prasad. Both drank the juice, with Gurusharanjeet Singh consuming the entire packet. Moments later, the couple fell unconscious. Kawaljeet Kaur was rushed to a government hospital and regained consciousness after treatment, but her husband was declared dead. (HT Photo) After the police did not file any case, Kawaljeet moved the high court, alleging that her gold bangles, her husband's gold bracelet and a gold ring were stolen during the incident. Acting on the HC's directive, the police registered a case under Sections 123, 103 and 305 of the BNS which pertain to murder and theft. According to Inspector Varinderpal Singh Uppal, station house officer (SHO) of the Jagraon City police station, said the case was being investigated thoroughly. 'We are pursuing leads and are actively searching for the accused,' he stated. He said some suspects were captured on camera during the event. The reason behind the murder will be ascertained after questioning the suspects, he added. With the release of pictures, the police are hoping to receive information from people about the suspects.
