The tale of Bharatha Matha temple, a pet project of C.R. Das and Subramania Siva

Congress veteran Kumari Ananthan (1933-2025), who passed away recently, had vigorously pursued a project in the later years of his life: the Bharatha Matha temple in a remote corner of the backward Dharmapuri district.
Actually, he had only followed up on what was initiated by two Congress stalwarts: former president of the All India Congress Committee C.R. Das (1870-1925), famously called Deshbandhu, and Subramania Siva (1884-1925). Coincidentally, this year marks the 100th death anniversary of the two leaders: Das died on June 16 and Siva on July 23. Siva, also known as Sivam, was one of Tamil Nadu's triumvirate of the freedom struggle; the others were V. O. Chidambaram (VOC) (1872-1936) and Subramania Bharati (1882-1921). Besides being a powerful orator, Siva was a writer-journalist. This great lover of Tamil had quoted from The Thirukkural to illustrate the 'tyrannical rule' of the British, something that had landed him in prison.
Das lays the foundation
Two years before his death, Das laid the foundation for the temple at Paparapatti in Pennagaram taluk, about 25 km from Dharmapuri. According to a report published in The Hindu on June 26, 1923, Das reached Paparapatti at 11 a.m. from Bangalore where he was a guest of Adinarayana Chettiar. 'The scene there was a memorable one. The entire village and the approaches had been beautifully decorated and lavishly beflagged... People had gathered in tens of thousands, nearly half the number being women,' says the report.
The report goes on to say that Chinnamuthu Mudaliar, chairman of the taluk board of Dharmapuri, then part of Salem district, donated land for the temple. He also announced that a purse of ₹501, on behalf of 'people of Paparapatty', would be presented to Das. The former AICC president made a 'short but eloquent' address, which was translated by Siva into Tamil. In his speech, Das, who later visited the house of Mudaliar, emphasised that 'various activities of a nation' — social and political — were but 'different manifestations' of the same impulse and had 'but one goal'.
Though Siva was born at Batlagundu (Vathalagundu in Tamil), now part of Dindigul district, he had spent his last years in Paparapatti. By then, he suffered from leprosy, which he contracted while serving a prison term during the British Raj. Siva became the first patriot in the Madras Presidency (encompassing many parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Odisha) to be found guilty and imprisoned on the charge of sedition in King Emperor vs Subramania Siva and V.O. Chidambaram Pillai.
The case was filed in connection with Siva's four public speeches at Thoothukudi (then Tuticorin) on February 23, 25 and 26, and March 5, 1908, to mark the release of Bipin Chandra Pal (1858-1932), a torch-bearer of the renaissance in Bengal. In March 1907, Pal was charged by the Bengal government with contempt of court and awarded a six-month imprisonment. VOC was accused of organising those events, though he did not take part in any of them. Siva was awarded a sentence of 10 years of transportation and VOC was awarded transportation for life. The severity of the punishment not only attracted widespread condemnation from a host of leaders but also triggered a wave of unrest and violence in the undivided Tirunelveli district that included the present-day Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts. Owing to a variety of factors, Tirunelveli Collector Robert William d'Escourt Ashe was assassinated by Vanchinathan at the Maniyachi railway junction three years later.
After the release, Siva's movement was restricted because of his illness and the stipulation of the British authorities. Yet, he managed to reach Paparapatti where Mudaliar had supported him. Siva wanted the temple to come up in his lifetime. That was not to be. For over 75 years, the project went out of public discourse. It returned to prominence during the second half of the DMK government (2006-11) ahead of the Pennagaram Assembly constituency by-election in March 2010. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced the sanction of ₹40 lakh for the 205-square metre memorial for Siva on 85 cents at Paparapatti. In August 2010, Information Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi laid the foundation, and in July 2011, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa declared the memorial open.
Demand renewed
It was then that the demand for the construction of the Bharatha Matha temple was renewed. In October 2012, to mark the 129th birth anniversary of Siva, Collector R. Lilly announced that the temple would come up soon. Kumari Ananthan began raising the demand again on various fora, including the Madras High Court. In October 2017, he even embarked on a 'padayatra'. When he wanted to observe a fast at the Siva memorial, he was removed from there and taken to the Dharmapuri government hospital because of his age. He was then 84. Though he had initially wanted the government to build the temple or let the others build it, he pitched for the government to take up the project when the RSS-affiliated Akhila Bharatiya Sanyasigal Sangam formed the Subramniya Siva Bharat Ashram Trust with a proposal to build the temple at a cost of ₹5 crore. In June 2018, the AIADMK government, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, announced that the temple would be built at an estimated cost of ₹1.5 crore. In August 2021, the Bharatha Matha Ninaivalayam, furnished with a library, had a low-key inauguration amid the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, with Information Minister M.P. Saminathan declaring it open. It took more than 95 years for the wish of Das and Siva to come true.

BJP MP Krishnaiah urges BCs to support Kavitha in ‘Rail Roko'

Hyderabad: BC Welfare Association leader R Krishnaiah on Sunday urged the Backward Caste communities to support BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha on increasing the reservations to BCs in the local body elections. The Jagruthi president sought Krishnaiah's support for the proposed 'Rail Roko' on July 17. MP R Krishnaiah extended his full support for the BC movement being led by Telangana Jagruthi President Kalvakuntla Kavitha. He said that the association would stand firmly with and participate in every program, including the 'Rail Roko' scheduled for July 17, jointly organized by Telangana Jagruthi and United Phule Front. He urged all BCs to become stakeholders in MLC Kavitha's movement. On Sunday, Kavitha met Krishnaiah at his residence in Hyderabad. Kavitha requested his support for the 'Rail Roko' program, which aims to pressure the central government to approve the bill passed by the assembly to provide 42 per cent reservation for BCs in local body elections. Speaking to reporters, Kavitha lauded Krishnaiah for leading numerous democratic and social movements. She stated that they have been fighting vigorously for two years to implement the Kamareddy BC Declaration given by the Congress party. She recalled that as a result of their struggle for 42 per cent reservation for BCs in local bodies, the assembly had passed two bills. However, she criticized the government, stating that despite the possibility of providing 42 per cent reservations through a GO under Article 243(D) of the Constitution, the government was not doing so and was instead shifting the blame entirely onto the President, planning to go into elections without providing reservations. She accused the Congress government of limiting its love for BCs to words and not showing it in actions. She expressed the need to collectively confront this anti-people policy, especially with leaks suggesting that the cabinet meeting might decide on local body elections. She explained that public movements appear to be the only way to pressure both central and state governments, hence the 'Rail Roko' initiative. She declared, "Aur Ek Dhakka... BC Bill Pakka..." Krishnaiah alleged that the state government was diverting public attention by rejecting the fact that the Constitution grants the state government the authority to determine the percentage of reservations in local bodies. He demanded that a GO be issued if there is genuine commitment to provide 42 per cent reservations. He warned that holding elections without providing reservations would be a historic betrayal of the BCs. He warned that elections must be held only after providing 42 per cent reservations for BCs, otherwise, there would be a 'war' in the state.

Ludhiana West bypoll result: Vote counting begins; 14 candidates in fray

NEW DELHI: Voting counting for the Ludhiana West assembly bypoll in Punjab commenced Monday at 8 am, following the June 19 election that was necessitated by the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January. The election saw 14 candidates competing, with a voter turnout of 51.33 percent. The counting process, which will consist of 14 rounds, is taking place at Khalsa College for Women under strict security arrangements. The voter participation marked a significant decline from the 64 percent turnout recorded in the 2022 Assembly polls. The main political parties contesting the bypoll were the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, BJP, and Shiromani Akali Dal. The Aam Aadmi Party nominated Sanjeev Arora, a 61-year-old Rajya Sabha member and Ludhiana-based industrialist known for his social welfare activities. BRS alleges Rs 1,100 crore scam in Civil Supplies dept, vows to approach ED

Hyderabad: BRS leaders on Sunday alleged a staggering Rs 1,100 crore scam within the paddy tenders, claiming that the state government, which should have received Rs 7,500 crore, secured less than half, with the remaining funds reportedly going illegally to bidders. This, they asserted, occurred because while the price was fixed at Rs 2,007 per quintal, millers were compelled to pay Rs 2,230. Addressing a press conference, BRS leader Peddi Sudarshan Reddy stated that despite alerting authorities and raising the issue in the Assembly through party MLAs, no action has been taken by the government. Sudarshan Reddy expressed suspicion over the participation of only four bidders in the tenders. He alleged that, so far, money has been collected from millers without the paddy being lifted, with cash transferred from millers to the bidders' accounts. 'We have collected 270 bank account details and sent them to the Chief Minister, Civil Supplies Minister, Civil Supplies Commissioner, the vigilance commission, and the ACB, but no action was taken. A total of Rs 7,500 crore should have reached the government treasury through these tenders. Not even half of it came. Instead of Rs 2,007 per quintal, Rs 2,230 was collected,' said Sudarshan Reddy. The BRS leader further pointed out that the High Court issued notices to the Chief Minister and the state minister, yet the government sought adjournments 16 times to file its counter. 'If you did not commit corruption, why are you seeking adjournments in the Court? Even though you filed illegal cases and summoned KCR, KTR, and Harish Rao in the name of investigation, why are Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy avoiding the court?' questioned Reddy. He further alleged that the deadline for the bidders was extended five times beyond the period specified in the tenders. Alleging that the bidders channelled Rs 1,100 crore to the Congress party, Sudarshan Reddy stated, 'We have given all the evidence to the court. Every Congress MLA got Rs 10 crore, and the civil supplies tender scam money has gone to Delhi. The MLAs were given money to ensure they do not go into despair.' He further alleged that Congress party representatives in Delhi were also involved in the civil supplies scam. He claimed that no grain was lifted anywhere except for the collection of money, and that Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy has remained silent on this scam so far. The authorities, he added, claimed that grain was being sent to the Philippines and were attempting to prematurely conclude the tender process. Demanding that Rs 1,100 crore be deposited into the Civil Supplies account, he announced that the party would lay siege to the Civil Supplies Bhavan and also approach the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding this alleged scam. Party leaders Errolla Srinivas, Bommera Ramamurthy, Sushila Reddy, K Kishore Goud, Y Satish Reddy, and Abhilash Rangineni were also present.
