
Concern for wildlife as 100-fold increase in chemicals found in harbours
Chemical pollution has increased by 100-fold in the waters of two south coast harbours which are home to sites of special scientific interest (SSSI), according to a new study.
Researchers from three universities have analysed the waters of Chichester and Langstone harbours and discovered 105 different pharmaceuticals, pesticides and illegal drugs including an insecticide used as a common pet flea treatment.
And the environmental scientists found that some of the chemicals increased by over 100-fold following rainy days which led to combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into the harbours which are on the border of Hampshire and West Sussex.
The team, made up of researchers from Brunel University, London, University of Portsmouth and Imperial College London, says that they are worried about the impact on the local wildlife in the 21 SSSIs in the area.
Dr Thomas Miller, from Brunel University, said: 'CSO discharges were an obvious source of chemical pollution in these waters.
'Our study found that some chemicals increased by over 100-fold in water after these discharges, making them a high risk to aquatic wildlife.'
The study, carried out with the help of the Clean Harbours Partnership and published in the journal Environment International, examined 339 water samples which revealed 67 pharmaceuticals, 29 pesticides and nine recreational drugs.
It comes after the Environment Agency revealed that storm overflows spilled sewage into England's rivers, lakes and coasts for new highs of more than 3.61 million hours in 2024.
The researchers found that seaweed soaked up more chemicals than shellfish and the insecticide imidacloprid, used a pet flea treatment, created the highest risk based on levels found in surface water.
Dr Leon Barron, from Imperial College London, said: 'Out of so many chemicals detected, the presence of pet tick and flea treatments in the harbours was especially concerning.
'We urgently need to reassess the practice of blanket preventative treatment of our dogs and cats to help bring the risk down.'
The team also found the presence of 1,3-diphenylguanidine, which is used in rubber production and which they say could indicate pollution from tyre-wear particles and road run-off after rainfall events.
Lead author Jasmin Uhlhorn, a PhD student from Brunel University, said: 'The research underscores the complexity of chemical mixtures present in transitional and coastal water systems, highlighting the need for more comprehensive monitoring to investigate their sources, including the impacts of CSO discharges.
'While studies on chemical pollution in these environments are limited, the findings suggest that the true risks of chemical mixtures may be underestimated, particularly for marine species.'
Professor Alex Ford, from the University of Portsmouth's Institute of Marine Sciences, said: 'The impact of these contaminants we are yet to fully understand, but it's clear from our data that they increase substantially under storm events which discharge untreated sewage.'
CHP co-founder Rob Bailey said: 'It is concerning to see such a large cocktail of chemicals being detected and hear their effects are largely unknown.
'As a community-based organisation we will continue to push for better monitoring of these protected marine habitats used by our members.'

Current heatwave ‘likely to kill almost 600 people in England and Wales'
Almost 600 people are expected to die early in the heatwave roasting England and Wales, a rapid analysis has found. The surge in deaths would not be occurring without human-caused global heating, the scientists said, with temperatures boosted by 2C-4C by the pollution from fossil fuels. Premature deaths will occur across the two countries but the highest mortality rates are expected in London and the West Midlands. Most of the deaths – 85% – will be people over 65 years old, who are more vulnerable to the extreme heat. People in inner-city homes are also at high risk. More than 10,000 people died before their time in summer heatwaves between 2020 and 2024, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The government's preparations to protect people from the escalating impacts of the climate crisis were condemned as 'inadequate, piecemeal and disjointed' by official advisers in April. The 32C heat that will be endured by people in the south-east of England on Saturday will have been made 100 times more likely by the climate crisis, scientists said on Friday. 'Heatwaves are silent killers – people who lose their lives in them typically have pre-existing health conditions and rarely have heat listed as a contributing cause of death,' said Dr Garyfallos Konstantinoudis, at Imperial College London, who is part of the team that estimated the number of deaths. 'This real-time analysis reveals the hidden toll of heatwaves and we want it to help raise the alarm,' he said. 'Heatwaves are an under-appreciated threat in the UK and they're becoming more dangerous with climate change.' Prof Antonio Gasparrini, at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and also part of the analysis team, said: 'Increases of just a degree or two can be the difference between life and death. 'When temperatures push past the limits populations are acclimatised to, excess deaths can increase very rapidly. Every fraction of a degree of warming will cause more hospital admissions and heat deaths, putting more strain on the NHS.' The analysis used decades of UK data to determine the relationship between temperatures and heat deaths in more than 34,000 areas across England and Wales. The researchers combined this with high-resolution weather forecasts to estimate that there will be about 570 deaths between Thursday and Sunday, with 129 in London. The number could be an underestimate, they said, as people were less prepared for heatwaves in early summer. Dr Malcolm Mistry, at LSHTM, said: 'Exposure to temperatures in the high 20s or low 30s may not seem dangerous, but they can be fatal, particularly for people aged over 65, infants, pregnant people, and those with pre-existing health conditions.' The UKHSA sounded the alarm on Thursday with an amber heat-health alert, also warning of 'a rise in deaths' and 'significant impacts' to health and social care services. The climate crisis drove the annual global temperature in 2024 to a new record and carbon dioxide emissions from coal, oil and gas are still rising. That means heatwaves will get ever more intense and frequent. A recent report by the UK climate change committee estimated that heat-related deaths could rise to more than 10,000 a year by 2050 if global temperatures rise to 2C above preindustrial levels. Globally, extreme heat is more deadly than floods, earthquakes and hurricanes combined, taking about 500,000 lives a year, according to a report by the insurer Swiss Re. Climate change blamed for UK heatwave amid 32C temperatures
Searing temperatures of 32C hitting the UK this week have been made 100 times more likely due to human-caused climate change, scientists have warned. A rapid study by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) research group found the current heatwave in the south-east of England was around 10 times more likely than without human activity warming the planet. Dr Fredi Otto, from Imperial College London, underscored the severity, warning that heatwaves are "silent killers" and that the impacts of heat are "severely underestimated", leaving the UK unprepared for the conditions expected to persist into the weekend. Experts highlighted that older people, along with those suffering from heart issues, respiratory illnesses, and conditions such as diabetes, face the highest risk of death. They also noted that heatwaves occurring earlier in the summer are particularly deadly, as the population is less acclimatised to coping with warmer conditions. The researchers also identified wildfires as an "emerging risk" for the UK during summer, with conditions increasingly resembling those found in southern Europe. They urged the public to exercise extreme caution with barbecues, cigarettes, and glass, all of which can ignite fires in the hot, dry weather. This study marks only the second time the WWA, known for its rapid assessments of climate change's role in specific extreme weather events, has analysed a forecasted event rather than one that has already occurred. The analysis, which drew on observations for early summer heat in the south east of the UK, found that a heatwave – defined as three days of temperatures above 28C for the region – in June would be expected once every five years today. But without humans warming the atmosphere by around 1.3C since pre-industrial times, such a heatwave would only have occurred about once every 50 years, the study shows. The heatwave was made approximately 2-4C more intense as a result of the overall warming of the planet, meaning the current weather 'just wouldn't have been a heatwave without human-induced warming', Dr Ben Clarke, from Imperial College London, said. Temperatures had been forecast to hit 32C across the south east on Saturday and had already reached that level on Thursday in London. Heat of that level could be expected in June once in 25 years in the current climate, but only once in 2,500 years in June before industrialisation, the researchers said. While the impacts of temperatures rising above 30C are not as severe as the record-breaking heat topping 40C in some places in July 2022, the researchers warned people were still at risk. They urged people to ensure they were drinking enough water, and to encourage elderly relatives to do the same, avoid areas with high air pollution, keep windows and curtains shut during the day, and consider going to cooler public buildings such as museums to protect against the heat. Dr Clarke, researcher at the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London, said: 'This heatwave is another reminder that our planet has already heated to a dangerous level. 'We're at 1.3C today, but heading for around 3C this century. 'With every fraction of a degree of warming, the UK will experience hotter, more dangerous heatwaves. 'That means more heat deaths, more pressure on the NHS, more transport disruptions, tougher work conditions and poorer air quality.' Dr Otto, associate professor in climate science at the Centre for Environmental Policy, said: 'We know exactly what has intensified this heatwave – burning oil, gas and coal, which has loaded the atmosphere with planet-heating greenhouse gases. 'It is totally insane we have political leaders in the UK trying to drag us back to the past with calls for more fossil fuels. 'The climate will continue to drive increasingly dangerous heatwaves, fires and floods in the UK until emissions are reduced to net zero globally.' She added that while people working in air-conditioned offices would 'probably be OK' this week, poorer people working outdoors, in kitchens or other hot environments and then returning home to poorly insulated flats would be enduring hot conditions throughout. 'Making our societies more equal is essential to reduce the impacts of climate change,' Dr Otto said.
