Operation Shield: Mock drills in J&K, Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan and Chandigarh - Know date, timing, activities & more
Operation Shield date & timing: Security agencies are all set to carry out Operation Shield, a large-scale mock drill, across six states and Union Territories (UTs) in India. This will be the second phase of the Civil Defence Exercise, designed to improve emergency response and public safety in areas near the Pakistan border.
Let's take a closer look at the date, timings, participating states, and what will happen during the drill.
Operation Shield details
Date: 31 May 2025
Timings: 5:00 PM onwards
States/UTs: Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan and Chandigarh
Purpose: Enhance emergency response and community readiness
Involvement: Civil Defence, NCC, NSS, NYKS, Bharat Scouts & Guides
Main activities: Evacuation drills, sirens, communication tests, hotline activation
When is Operation Shield? Check Date and Timings
The mock drill, named Operation Shield, is scheduled to take place on 31 May 2025, starting at 5:00 PM onwards. However, the timings may vary slightly depending on local convenience, as mentioned in a press release issued on 29 May 2025.
States and UTs Participating in Operation Shield
This mock drill will be conducted across districts close to the India-Pakistan border. The six participating states and UTs include:
Punjab
Jammu and Kashmir
Gujarat
Haryana
Rajasthan
Chandigarh
These regions are considered sensitive due to their proximity to the Line of Control (LoC) and are often vulnerable to cross-border threats. The goal of Operation Shield is to strengthen coordination among security forces and improve local response capabilities.
Why Operation Shield is Being Conducted
Operation Shield is a follow-up to the first Civil Defence Exercise held on 7 May 2025, just before Operation Sindoor – India's military action in response to a terrorist attack. The recent drills aim to enhance alertness, community engagement, and readiness in case of real emergencies.
According to Umesh Sharma, Assistant Director General of Civil Defence, all local administrations and stakeholders are encouraged to fully participate and share an action report after the drill is completed.
Who Will Be Involved in the Mock Drill
A wide range of organisations and volunteers will take part in the drill. Participants include:
Civil Defence Wardens
Civil Defence Volunteers
Youth groups like NCC (National Cadet Corps), NSS (National Service Scheme), NYKS (Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan), and Bharat Scouts & Guides
This collective effort shows the importance of involving the community in national safety and defence measures.
Activities Planned During Operation Shield
The mock drill will include various simulated emergency scenarios to test the preparedness of all involved. Some of the main activities are:
Silent and general recall of Civil Defence volunteers
Evacuation drills
Emergency communication tests
Activation of hotlines between the Air Force and Civil Defence Control Rooms
Use of air raid sirens controlled from central hubs
These activities aim to ensure that, in the event of a real threat, the response can be quick, organised, and effective.
Operation Shield in the Context of Operation Sindoor
The timing of Operation Shield is notable, as it comes after Operation Sindoor, India's military strike on April 22, 2025, in response to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people were killed. In that operation, the Indian Armed Forces carried out targeted attacks on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
From May 7 to 10, India witnessed four days of heightened military tension, including shelling and attempted drone attacks by Pakistan. This backdrop further explains why Operation Shield and its mock drills are critical for national preparedness.
What to Expect on 31 May
Residents living in the above-mentioned states and UTs should not panic on 31 May when they hear air raid sirens or see evacuation exercises in progress. These are part of Operation Shield, a planned mock drill to keep everyone prepared for any emergency.
Security agencies urge full cooperation from the public, local officials, and volunteers to ensure the success of the exercise.
Stay informed, stay safe. Operation Shield is about strengthening our nation's defence—together.

Day after endorsing Trump for Nobel Peace Prize, Pakistan terms US strikes on Iran ‘deeply disturbing'
Pakistan, Iran's ally, Sunday called the attacks a violation of international law and warned of dangerous consequences for the region. A statement released by its Foreign Office expressed 'grave concern' over the strikes, which followed Israel's attacks, calling the development 'deeply disturbing', and noting that such 'aggression' risked triggering a broader regional conflagration. New Delhi: A day after nominating US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, Pakistan has issued a sharp condemnation of the United States' coordinated airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in a strategic balancing act. Pakistan Condemns the US Attacks on the Nuclear Facilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran. 🔗⬇️ — Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Pakistan (@ForeignOfficePk) June 22, 2025 'These attacks violate all norms of international law, and Iran has the legitimate right to defend itself under the UN Charter,' the statement read, adding that any further escalation would have 'severely damaging implications for the region and beyond'. 'All parties must adhere to international law, particularly International Humanitarian Law,' it added. The Foreign Office urged all actors to pursue 'dialogue and diplomacy' in accordance with the UN Charter, calling it the 'only viable pathway' to resolving the growing crisis in the Middle East. The statement did not directly address the apparent contradiction between the condemnation of the strikes and its recent endorsement of Trump's role in regional peace efforts. On Saturday, the Pakistan government announced that it had 'formally decided to recommend' Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his 'decisive diplomatic intervention' and 'pivotal leadership' during the India-Pakistan conflict last month. The declaration, shared on X, came just two days after Trump hosted Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir for a luncheon at the White House. Trump has claimed credit for brokering the ceasefire between India and Pakistan on multiple occasions, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Trump over a phone call earlier this week that at no point during Operation Sindoor was trade or mediation over the India-Pakistan issue was discussed with the US administration. Several regional powers maintain strong ties with Iran, with Pakistan standing out as the only Islamic nation among them possessing a nuclear arsenal. In the past weeks, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had sought to deepen Tehran's strategic alignment with Islamabad, particularly in response to Israel's ongoing actions in Gaza. After Israel's attack, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had expressed 'unwavering solidarity' with Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian, condemning what he described as Israel's 'unprovoked aggression'. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, in a recent interview, warned that Israel would 'think many times before taking on Pakistan'. But Pakistan's rhetoric, such as Asif's warning to Israel, stopped short of promising intervention. Islamabad is trying to maintain strong ties with both Washington and Tehran amid escalating regional conflict, with its Nobel nomination for Trump, while condemning airstrikes to signal solidarity with Iran and the broader Muslim world. However, Pakistan's leading national daily Dawn has called the nomination for Trump 'farcical'. 'It is a shame there is no office for 'king of the world', or Mr Trump might very well have been nominated for that instead, given the Pakistani government's gratitude for his 'decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership' in the recent skirmishes with India. It has also been announced on what appears to be the eve of yet another unjustified and potentially catastrophic American war in the Middle East', Dawn's editorial read. 'The intent behind this surprising move lands with all the subtlety of a marching band. The ruling elite here has long understood that flattery, particularly of powerful men with fragile egos, is a very dependable strategy for courting their favour,' it added. PM Modi committed to giving befitting reply in fight against terrorism, Naxalism: Piyush Goyal
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 22 (ANI): Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday affirmed the central government's unwavering resolve in tackling threats such as terrorism and Naxalism in the country Referring to the continuing Operation Sindoor, Goyal reiterated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with senior ministers, is fully committed to delivering a strong response. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Goyal said, 'PM Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and the entire government are fully dedicated to fighting a comprehensive war against terrorism and Naxalism... Operation Sindoor is still underway, and given the heinous manner in which our brothers and sisters were killed, the Prime Minister will undoubtedly give a befitting reply...' As per an official statement from the government of India, a clear doctrine on the counter terrorism and Naxalism now guides action - which is swift, decisive and backed by intelligence. With the abrogation of Article 370, the campaign against Naxalism, and new capabilities in high-tech defence, India today stands more secure and self-reliant than ever before. Operation Sindoor, India's swift and precise military response to a terror attack in April 2025, further demonstrated this resolve. These successes are a result of political will, military strength and a deeply rooted belief in putting the country first. India responded to the terrorist attack in Uri on 18 soldiers by conducting Surgical Strikes on September 28-29, 2016. These strikes inflicted heavy losses on terrorists and their protectors across the Line of Control. A few years later, on February 14, 2019, the Pulwama terror attack claimed 40 CRPF jawans. India's response came swiftly. On February 26, 2019, in an intelligence-led operation, the Balakot airstrikes eliminated a large number of Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists, including senior commanders. The facility targeted was located far from civilian areas and headed by Maulana Yousuf Azhar, brother-in-law of JeM chief Masood Azhar. These pre-emptive actions showed the world that India would no longer tolerate proxy wars through terrorism. In April 2025, following a brutal terror attack on civilians in Pahalgam, India launched Operation Sindoor, executing precise retaliatory strikes against nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian military, acting on accurate intelligence, relied on drone strikes, loitering munitions, and layered air defence to neutralise key threats without crossing international boundaries. When Pakistan launched drone and missile attacks on May 7-8 against multiple Indian cities and bases, these were swiftly intercepted, showcasing the effectiveness of India's net-centric warfare systems and integrated counter-UAS (unmanned aerial systems) grid. Earlier, in his address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India's firm policy on cross-border terrorism and its approach towards Pakistan. He underlined that national security is non-negotiable and outlined clear red lines regarding dialogue, deterrence, and defence. (ANI)
