PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Russia have agreed to begin talks on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into firefighting operations, flight simulation technology and firefighter training. The Housing and Local Government Ministry said the decision was reached during a bilateral meeting between its minister Nga Kor Ming and Russian Minister of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters, Colonel General Alexander Kurenkov, on Thursday (June 19). The ministry, in a statement on Friday (June 20), said the meeting marked a significant step towards strengthening diplomatic ties and fostering strategic collaboration between Malaysia and Russia. Nga, in the same statement, confirmed that both the government and the Russian Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters had agreed to initiate talks on the MOU. "I believe we can enhance the nation's emergency response capabilities through strategic cooperation and the sharing of expertise in firefighting and disaster management,' he said. Focus on health and safety preparations

Rising heat and crowd safety drove urgent discussions yesterday, as organisers of hospitality booths from across Bahrain gathered to prepare for this year's Ashoora commemorations. The yearly meeting, hosted by the Eastern Karbabad Matam, attracted delegates from all of the kingdom's governorates. Organised by the Jaffaria Waqf Directorate (JWD), the event featured key briefings from the Health Ministry, Civil Defence and the Nabdat Hayat (Pulse of Life) volunteer team. Civil Defence representative Hassan Radhi emphasised the need for vigilance, particularly with Ashoora coinciding with the height of summer. Public awareness Radhi set out essential safety measures for booths and public spaces, adding that Civil Defence had begun rolling out a public awareness campaign alongside Jaafari Waqf and community groups. Dr Mohammed Al Awadhi, Public Health Director at the Health Ministry, explained the healthcare preparations for Ashoora, outlining plans for the Imam Hussain Clinic, awareness campaigns and site inspections. Ibrahim Mohammed Jawad provided practical guidance on food hygiene, clearly setting out proper methods for preparation and storage to keep the public safe. First-aid advice Trainer Mohammed Ashour, from Nabdat Hayat, shared valuable first-aid advice, highlighting the importance of basic life support skills, especially among volunteers responsible for managing large gatherings. His goal, Ashour noted, was building greater emergency preparedness across local communities. The meeting ended with organisers invited to share feedback and suggestions, followed by the annual distribution of official renewal stickers for licensed hospitality booths (known locally as madheef ). Cooperation Yusuf bin Saleh Al Saleh, Chairman of JWD, thanked the attendees for their continued cooperation, praising their adherence to health and safety standards. He credited organisers' dedication for upholding the values associated with Ashoora, adding his appreciation to Eastern Karbabad Matam for again hosting the event. 'This gathering is essential in making certain the commemorations run safely and smoothly,' Al Saleh said, noting the generous backing of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

Gaza rescuers say 30 killed by Israeli fire

Palestinians ride on a truck loaded with food and humanitarian aid from the World Food Programme. (AP pic) GAZA CITY : Gaza's civil defence agency said 30 people were killed by Israeli fire in the Palestinian territory on Wednesday, including 11 who were seeking aid. The war sparked by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel has ravaged the Gaza Strip, with severe shortages of food, fuel and clean water. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that 11 people were killed and more than 100 wounded 'after the occupation forces opened fire and launched several shells… at thousands of citizens' who had gathered to queue for food in central Gaza. In early March, Israel imposed a total aid blockade on Gaza amid a deadlock in truce negotiations, only partially easing restrictions in late May. Since then, chaotic scenes and a string of deadly shootings have occurred near areas where Palestinians have gathered in hope of receiving aid. The civil defence agency said another 19 people were killed in three Israeli strikes on Wednesday, which it said targeted houses and a tent for displaced people. When asked for comment by AFP, the Israeli military said it was 'looking into' the reports. Israeli restrictions on media in the Gaza Strip and difficulties in accessing some areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defence agency. The UN humanitarian office OCHA said on Monday that its partners 'continue to warn of the risk of famine in Gaza, amid catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity'. The civil defence agency reported that at least 53 people were killed on Tuesday, as they gathered near an aid centre in the southern city of Khan Yunis hoping to receive flour. After Israel eased its blockade, the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began distributing aid in late May, but its operations have been marred by chaotic scenes and dozens of deaths. In a statement on Tuesday, the organisation said that 'to date, not a single incident has occurred at or in the surrounding vicinity of GHF sites nor has an incident occurred during our operating hours.' UN agencies and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the foundation over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives. The Hamas attack which triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to Israeli official figures. The Gaza health ministry said on Tuesday that 5,194 people have been killed since Israel resumed major operations in the territory on March 18, ending a two-month truce. The overall death toll in Gaza since the war broke out has reached 55,493 people, according to the health ministry.

Israeli forces kill or injure 11 Palestinians awaiting food trucks, say Gaza officials

Eleven Palestinians were killed or injured on Tuesday morning after Israeli forces opened fire on a crowd waiting for food trucks in central Gaza, civil defence officials in the devastated territory have said. More than a hundred Palestinians have died in recent days after being targeted by the Israeli military in Gaza as they gathered near food distribution centres or on routes along which trucks were expected to travel. The Israeli military said it was 'looking into' reports of the new incident. Mahmoud Bassal, a civil defence spokesperson, told AFP that 11 people were killed and more than 100 wounded on Monday morning 'after [Israeli] forces opened fire and launched several shells ... at thousands of citizens' who had gathered to queue for food in central Gaza. The civil defence agency said another 19 people were killed in three Israeli strikes on Wednesday, which it said targeted houses and a tent for displaced people. Food has become extremely scarce in Gaza since a tight blockade on all supplies entering Gaza was imposed by Israel throughout March and April, threatening many of the 2.3 million people who live there with a 'critical risk of famine'. The UN humanitarian office OCHA said this week that its partners 'continue to warn of the risk of famine in Gaza, amid catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity'. Since the blockade was partially lifted last month, the UN has tried to bring in aid but has faced major obstacles, including rubble-choked roads, Israeli military restrictions, continuing airstrikes and growing anarchy. Aid officials said 23 UN trucks on average had entered Gaza through the main checkpoint of Kerem Shalom in recent days but most have been 'self-distributed' by hungry Palestinians who stop them or looted by organised gangs. 'A few made it to the warehouses and the bakeries but the majority were stopped along the way … and off-loaded by hungry civilians in critical need of food to feed their families,' a UN official said. On Tuesday morning, at least 59 Palestinians were killed and hundreds more wounded in Khan Younis, according to medical officials, as they waited for a truck loaded with flour. Other violence elsewhere in Gaza, including a shooting near an distribution site in the city of Rafah, took the day's overall death toll among Palestinians seeking food to at least 73. Many of the recent incidents have involved Israeli forces opening fire on crowds trying to reach food distribution points run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a private organisation that began operating in Gaza last month with Israeli and US support. On Monday, at least 37 Palestinians were killed as they tried to reach a GHF site, local authorities said. The Israel Defense Forces disputed the death toll, saying it did not match its information. Witnesses blamed that shooting on Israeli troops who opened fire early in the morning as crowds of hungry Palestinians converged on two hubs managed by the GHF. The IDF said in a statement: 'Despite warnings that the area is an active combat zone, overnight several attempts were made by suspects to approach IDF troops who were operating in the area of Rafah, posing a danger to them. IDF troops operated in order to remove the threat and prevent the suspects from approaching them, and fired warning shots.' Israel hopes the GHF will replace the previous comprehensive system of aid distribution run by the UN, which Israeli officials claim allowed Hamas to steal and sell aid. UN agencies and major aid groups, which have delivered humanitarian aid across Gaza since the start of 20 month long war, have rejected the new system, saying it is impractical, inadequate and unethical. They deny there is widespread theft of aid by Hamas. The GHF's provisions so far have been grossly inadequate, humanitarian officials in Gaza say. UN agencies and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the GHF over concerns it was designed to advance Israel's military objectives. Israel launched its campaign aiming to destroy Hamas after the group's 7 October 2023 attack on southern Israel, in which militants killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took another 251 hostage. The militants still hold 53 hostages, fewer than half of them alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals The Gaza health ministry said on Tuesday that 5,194 people have been killed since Israel resumed major operations in the territory on 18 March, ending a two-month truce. The death toll in Gaza since the war broke out has reached 55,493, according to the health ministry.
