Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka HC restrains police from arresting RCB official, three others
The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday restrained Bengaluru Police from arresting or taking any coercive action against officials of Royal Challengers Bengaluru or event management company DNA in the case linked to the stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bar and Bench reported.
The decision follows the High Court's June 12 ruling, which declared as ' illegal ' the arrest of Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, along with event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks' Sunil Mathew, Kiran Kumar S and Shamant NP Mavinakere.
The court had also granted them interim bail.
They were arrested after eleven persons were killed and more than 50 were injured on June 4 in the stampede near the stadium, where fans had gathered to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory in the Indian Premier League.
Justice SR Krishna Kumar on Tuesday ordered the petitioners to cooperate with the investigation. He added that this arrangement will remain in effect until the next hearing on July 8.
The four persons were arrested hours after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the state government had ordered the arrest of representatives from the Karnataka State Cricket Association, DNA Entertainment Networks and Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the stampede.

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Police have raided 17 bars across the city on charges of illegally employing female servers and engaging in unlawful activities. The bars were also conducting overtime operations and obscene dances, violating the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). A statement released in this regard by the office of the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner on Friday stated that 11 special teams had conducted raids and found violations of guidelines. The Bengaluru City Police Commissioner received credible information that several bars and restaurants in the West zone of the city were illegally employing female servers and engaging in unlawful activities. Based on this information, 11 special police teams were formed in the West zone. "A special raid was conducted on bars and restaurants falling under the jurisdictions of Upparpet, Cottonpet, Kalasipalya, Cubbon Park and Ashoknagar Police Stations,' the statement said. During the raid, it was found that 19 bars and restaurants were violating regulations by employing female workers who were provocatively dressed and standing near customers' tables in an indecent manner. Further violations included the absence of appointed female security guards, lack of cleanliness in kitchen areas, not designating or maintaining a proper smoking zone and operating beyond permitted hours, the statement said. Customers who violated the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) regulations were fined on the spot. Reports have been submitted to the respective police stations for further legal action against the owners of the bars and restaurants, according to the statement. Another significant finding was that violations were not limited to police regulations but also extended to health and excise departments. These findings have been communicated to the concerned departments, requesting appropriate action. Strict monitoring will continue for these commercial establishments in the coming days. If found violating regulations again, their licences will be cancelled, the statement said. "If the public faces any inconvenience or notices any such violations, they are encouraged to call the helpline number. The identity of informants will be kept confidential,' Bengaluru Police said in the statement. This special raid operation was conducted under the guidance of C. Vamsi Krishna, Joint Commissioner of Police, West Zone, and under the leadership of S. Girish, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Division, with the involvement of officers and staff from the Central and West Divisions as part of the 11 special police teams.

Maran vs Maran: Sun TV family feud explained; what Dayanidhi said in legal notice to Kalanithi
Former Union minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Dayanidhi Maran has accused his brother Kalanithi Maran of "financial crimes" since 2003 over Sun TV Private Limited, asking him to restore the entire shareholding position of the group and its related companies to their original state. The legal notice Dayanidhi sent to his brother alleged that Kalanithi Maran allotted 1.2 million equity shares of Sun TV Private Limited at ₹10 each in his name, with the claim that this was done without any proper valuation and fair consideration. Reportedly, Kalanithi did not own a single share in the company till September 15, 2003. According to the former Union minister, the "illegal" activities began in September 2003, days after their late father and former Union minister Murasoli Maran was brought back to Chennai from the US, where he was undergoing treatment, HT reported. Following Murasoli's death in November 2003, the shares were transferred to their mother, Mallika Maran, without any legal documentation. Dayanidhi has, however, alleged that Kalanithi transferred the shares to himself at ₹10 each just three days after Murasoli's death, which must be even before the issuance of the death certificate. The notice reportedly called the transfer void and fraudulent. Kalanithi allegedly derived dividends of ₹5,926 crore until 2023 and ₹455 crore in the 2024 fiscal. Dayanidhi said his brother's offences are 'continuous in nature and continue as on date'. The Sun TV Network's consolidated income for the 2024-25 financial year was ₹4,712.60 crore, down 1.55 per cent. Kalanithi Maran "illicitly acquired" the shares of their aunt and Karunanidhi's widow, MK Dayalu, using funds drawn from Sun TV Private Limited, the notice alleged. The notice read, "You and your accomplices have deliberately abused your fiduciary and professional obligations to commit a series of calculated and coordinated financial crimes." Dayanidhi alleged that such acts equate to white-collar criminality of the highest order, causing irreparable loss to the legitimate stakeholders of the companies in question. Dayanidhi's notice further alleged that the shares were allotted to Kalanithi without consent from stakeholders, i.e., the families of Murasoli Maran and DMK founder M Karunanidhi. The DMK leader also sent legal notices to his brother's wife, Kaveri Kalanithi, Sun TV's company secretary Ravi Ramamoorthy, and auditor Sivasubramanian. Kaveri is reportedly accused of drawing a salary of ₹87.5 crore annually. Dayanidhi has also threatened to approach the central government, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for action against the licenses of the Sun Group, Indian Premier League team Sunrisers Hyderabad, and the operation of SpiceJet Ltd. Sun TV was started in 1993 from the DMK's headquarters in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Today, it is a major network, owning 37 television channels in seven Indian languages, a Direct-To-Home broadcast service, 69 FM radio stations, three daily newspapers, six magazines, and two sports franchises. According to the notice, the company was allegedly in a healthy financial position. Citing the audited balance sheet, it said the company's reserves and surplus were ₹253 crore as of March 31, 2003. The notice added that there was no need for any external funding. Dayanidhi Maran had also sent a notice to Kalanithi in October 2024, wherein he alleged that his brother issued a "vague reply", and paid ₹500 crore to their sister Anbukarasi Maran through their mother's bank account. "This settlement and initial payment demonstrated your attempt to evade repercussions for the fraudulent activities you committed and to conceal your criminal actions. These payments have been made by you again by using the funds of M/s SUN TV Network Limited by way of dividends," the notice added. Sun TV on Friday defended Kalanithi Maran against the backdrop of the allegations levelled by Dayanidhi Maran, saying that the division between the promoter family was done 22 years ago in compliance with all legal obligations. In a regulatory filing, the network said the agreements between the two brothers had been "duly vetted" by "intermediaries" concerned before the company's public issue. The Sun TV network's regulatory filing said, "The alleged matter dates back to 22 years when the company was a closely held private limited company. Statements allegedly made in the articles are incorrect, misleading, speculating, defamatory and not supported by facts or law." "We wish to inform that all acts have been done in accordance with legal obligations and the same had been duly vetted by concerned intermediaries before the public issue of the company," it added. The Sun TV Network also clarified that reports of rift between Maran brothers "does not have any bearing on the business of the company or its day-to-day functioning".

The Bengaluru stampede controversy has taken a new turn, with advocate-activist TJ Abraham lodging a formal complaint against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar at Bengaluru's Cubbon Park Police station, holding them responsible for the tragedy, The Indian Express reported. The tragic stampede at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, which left 11 dead and over 60 injured, occurred at the front of the premises, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team's IPL victory celebrations. Abraham's complaint named as many as 14 individuals, including Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, DPAR Secretary Sathyavathi G, KSCA CEO Shubendu Ghosh, RCB Senior Director Menon Vijayan Rajesh, and DNA Entertainment Networks MD Thimmaiah Venkata Varadhana. High-ranking police officers, Home Minister G Parameshwara, and Additional Chief Secretary Tushar Girinath were also listed, the report stated. According to Abraham, Shivakumar allegedly used the event for personal gain and political optics, suggesting he was in talks to acquire a stake in the RCB franchise. He claimed the Deputy CM planned two last-minute public events to draw media attention, disregarding safety concerns. Abraham also alleged that the police had prepared for a victory parade, but Shivakumar's last-minute changes disrupted plans. He accused Chief Secretary Rajneesh of misusing public funds to support the event, arguing that these actions prioritized publicity over public safety, according to the report. He blamed a senior police officer, Shekar H Tekkannavar (former DCP Central), of deliberately keeping stadium gates closed under Shivakumar's instructions to create a crowd spectacle as he arrived. Four individuals tied to event organization, including RCB's Marketing Head Nikhil Sosale and DNA Networks staff, were arrested and later released on bail. Abraham was last in the news for being one of the petitioners who had urged Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to permit investigation against CM Siddaramaiah in the alleged Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) scam.
