TAWAU: Polytechnic and Community Colleges (POLYCC) continue to play a crucial role as leaders in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Malaysia. Director of Politeknik Tawau Sabah (PTS) Mohd Sahran @ Awang Mohidin, said that TVET education is increasingly becoming the top choice for students who are more inclined towards practical and skills-based learning. He emphasised that this is because TVET fields offer strong job prospects immediately after graduation. 'POLYCC also offers affordable tuition fees of only RM200 per semester, including programmes available at PTS such as the Diploma in Tourism Management and Diploma in Recreational Tourism,' he said while officiating the three-day 'Generasi Aspirasi SMK Ulu Sapi, Beluran 2025' programme . The programme was held at PTS on May 2-4, which involved 84 students from the school. It was organised in collaboration with PTS and the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) (Tawau Campus). Meanwhile, the Principal of SMK Ulu Sapi, Railen @ Maria Guang, said the programme met its objectives by fostering cooperation among the three institutions in providing early exposure to higher education opportunities for the students involved. 'It has, to some extent, provided motivation and a clearer understanding for students about their educational pathways after completing the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM),' she said. She added that the participating students were from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (Stem) A and Humanities streams. The programme included educational and career motivation sessions, as well as briefings on admission into Polytechnics and Community Colleges. Participants also had the opportunity to experience both theoretical and practical learning sessions conducted entirely by lecturers and the Student Representative Council (JPP) of both institutions. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? E-commerce Malay language rule paused, ministry to gather feedback from sellers

The ruling, which was set to be enforced on June 24 under the Consumer Protection (Electronic Trade Transactions) Regulations 2024 (CPETTR 2024), had sparked concern among online sellers when it was first reported by Nanyang Siang Pau on June 20. In response to the uproar, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living issued a statement confirming that it would meet with major platform operators to discuss the issue and gather feedback. Acknowledging the strong public reaction, the Ministry clarified that enforcement of the Malay-language listing requirement would be delayed for further review. The CPETTR 2024 was designed to strengthen consumer protection in digital commerce. It mandates that online sellers provide accurate company details, including their name, contact information, and business address. More controversially, it requires all product titles and descriptions to be in Bahasa Malaysia, although brand names can remain in their original language. Additional language translations could also be included. Advertisement Sellers of certain products would also need to provide valid certifications to prove compliance with safety standards. Non-compliance with these rules could lead to hefty fines. Individuals face penalties of up to RM50,000 or three years in jail for the first offence, while companies could be fined up to RM100,000. Repeat offenders risk facing double penalties. The initial enforcement announcement triggered an uproar among sellers, many of whom scrambled overnight to translate listings, flooding online communities with concerns and complaints. Although the regulation remains in place, the ministry confirmed that enforcement — particularly the Malay-language listing requirement — has been temporarily suspended. The implementation timeline will be reviewed based on feedback from platform operators, according to a letter signed by the ministry's irector of Enforcement, Datuk Azman Adam. While no new enforcement date has been announced, many sellers are urging the government to provide clearer guidelines, technical support, and avoid a one-size-fits-all policy. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysian Aviation Commission to be absorbed by Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia on August 1

Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 By: Minderjeet Kaur, FMT Text Size: Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said all 57 Mavcom staff would be offered positions in CAAM, based on their experience and qualifications. PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) will be dissolved and integrated into the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) from Aug 1, a rationalisation move to streamline regulatory oversight without incurring higher charges on air passengers. Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said all 57 Mavcom staff would be offered positions in CAAM, based on their experience and qualifications. 'We assure all stakeholders that this transition will be carried out in an orderly and smooth manner. Every staff member will be informed of their new role in due course,' he told a press conference at his ministry here. Loke said the merger would position CAAM as the sole regulatory authority for the aviation industry in Malaysia, covering technical, safety, and economic aspects. He added that this would not involve additional costs to passengers. Instead, he said the rationalisation would result in significant cost savings, which would be redirected to attract and retain qualified technical personnel, especially in critical areas like air traffic control and aviation safety. Advertisement He said most of this revenue would come from the air navigation charges imposed on airlines using Malaysian airspace, especially foreign carriers, since January this year. 'It will save the government RM150 million to RM200 million annually,' he said, adding that CAAM currently had a total of 1,430 employees. He also said that the government's decision to grant CAAM the status of a statutory body with separate emoluments would make the regulator financially independent. 'This is not just a merger. It's a fundamental step towards strengthening CAAM's position as a more competitive, resilient, and progressive regulator in line with international best practices.' Loke said CAAM's estimated revenue for 2025 was RM420 million, an increase from RM100 million to 110 million per annum previously. 'As of May this year alone, CAAM collected RM150 million, which is more than its total revenue for all of last year,' he added. Loke said these reforms were necessary following Malaysia's downgrade from Category 1 to Category 2 by the US Federal Aviation Administration, partly due to CAAM's inability to offer market-competitive salaries to technical staff. 'With this new financial model, we can offer better packages and retain top talent.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PUC Sport Expands Brand Reach, Sponsors WTS FC And Nara United

KOTA BHARU, June 23 (Bernama) -- Local sportswear company PUC Sport is strengthening its strategic presence in football by sponsoring two teams, Wan Tendong Stable (WTS FC) and Thai club Nara United. PUC Sport chief executive officer Mohd Shukry Pauzi said Nara United, based in Narathiwat, was chosen for its strength and the unique support of its fans who consistently fill the stadium during matches. 'The first-phase sponsorship, worth two million baht (over RM200,000), was secured through the collaboration of PUC Sport Thailand, a joint venture between PUC Sport and its Thai partner. bootstrap slideshow 'The total sponsorship value, including merchandise, is expected to reach nearly five million baht (over RM600,000), covering marketing support and branch development,' he told reporters here last night. Mohd Shukry said the company plans to open at least 10 to 20 new branches in southern Thailand over the next five years to strengthen its brand presence in the region. Meanwhile, he said the RM100,000 sponsorship for WTS FC will support the team's participation in the A1 League, particularly in terms of logistics and sports equipment provision. 'This initiative reflects our commitment to supporting the development of local teams to a higher level, including aspects of management and brand promotion,' he said. PUC Sport also launched a special edition jersey inspired by the golden era of Kelantan FA between 2009 and 2015. The jersey was signed by 18 Kelantan football legends and will be offered as a collector's item. -- BERNAMA
