Chinese calligraphy exhibition opens in Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The China Cultural Center in Copenhagen (CCCC) on Saturday held the opening ceremony of the "Lanting Culture Salon - Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition," aimed at promoting cultural exchange between China and Denmark through the traditional art of Chinese calligraphy. The exhibition draws inspiration from the historic "Lanting Gathering," a famous assembly of scholars at the Orchid Pavilion during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420). It presents calligraphy not only as a writing tool but also as a form of artistic and cultural expression with more than 3,000 years of history. According to Mu Xianghong, director of the CCCC, the exhibition offers "a dialogue across time and space, across cultures and continents," highlighting the enduring appeal and philosophical depth of Chinese calligraphy. The exhibition features four themed sections: the Historical Calligraphy Zone, showcasing works from past dynasties; the Contemporary Calligraphy Zone, presenting modern interpretations and multimedia displays; the Seal Carving Zone, focusing on the artistry of traditional Chinese seals; and the Interactive Experience Zone, where visitors can try their hand at calligraphy and seal carving. Princess Eleonore-Christine of Schaumburg-Lippe attended the event alongside artists, scholars and cultural figures from both China and Denmark. Speaking to Xinhua, the princess said she was impressed by the range of artistic styles and the cultural continuity reflected in ancient Chinese scripts. "What impressed me most is that Chinese people today can still read calligraphy written thousands of years ago. It shows a continuity of culture that's truly remarkable," she said. She also shared her experience of visiting China for the first time earlier this month. The event also featured a keynote lecture by a Chinese calligrapher titled "Trace the Ink Charm of a Thousand Years and Savor the Elegance of Clerical Script," offering insights into the evolution of Han dynasty (202 BC-220 AD) calligraphy. The exhibition is open to the public and will run for two weeks.

Soccer-Italy cracks down on violence against referees

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Serie A - Como v Inter Milan - Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, Como, Italy - May 23, 2025 Como's Gabriel Strefezza is shown a yellow card by referee Davide Massa after Como's Pepe Reina is sent off REUTERS/Claudia Greco/File Photo ROME (Reuters) -Referees in Italy will now receive the same legal protection as police officers and other public officials, Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said, to help curb a rise in cases of assault in sports such as soccer. A change to the penal code will mean much tougher penalties, include potentially jail, for acts of violence against match officials, including pushing, hitting, or threatening. The move follows months of discussions between the government and the Italian Soccer Referees Association. The law, part of a decree approved by the Italian government late on Friday, extends protection to all officials responsible for ensuring sporting fixtures are conducted fairly. Abuse towards match officials at all levels of Italian soccer has become a growing concern. In December, Serie A referees highlighted the issue by wearing black smudges on their cheeks during matches as a symbol of protest. In one notorious example last season, 19-year-old referee Diego Alfonzetti was attacked when he took charge of a youth match in Sicily. Alfonzetti was invited on to the pitch alongside the match officials before the Lazio-Rome Serie A derby in April as an act of solidarity. "Sport is loyalty and sharing. Those who do not accept it are warned: from tomorrow violent behaviour and aggression against referees will be punished without delay, even with prison," said Senator Andrea Ostellari, a junior justice minister. Vondrousova ousts top seed Sabalenka to reach Berlin final

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA powered past world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-2 6-4 at the Berlin Open on Saturday to book a place in her first final since she won Wimbledon in 2023. Czech Vondrousova controlled the tempo from the outset with big serving on the grass as she wrapped up the win in one hour and 20 minutes. She broke the Belarusian twice in the first set while saving both break points she faced. The second set saw the players trade early breaks and Sabalenka saved two break points to stay in touch at 3-2, before the match settled into a rhythm at 4-4. Sabalenka, who saved four match points against Elena Rybakina on Friday, could not repeat that escape as Vondrousova broke for 5-4 and served it out on her first match point with an ace. "I feel like on grass you have to take risks, you know, and that was the point; I was like, okay, let's try. The match would continue otherwise, so you have to go for it. I was feeling really well today so, yeah, I'm just very happy," Vondrousova said. "I didn't play for a long time, so I'm just so happy to be back healthy and so grateful to play these matches. When I saw the field, I was like, okay, let's try to win the first round, and now this is happening. So thank you guys for the support." While Sabalenka struggled to find consistency, racking up 30 unforced errors, Vondrousova stayed measured and composed throughout, limiting her own tally to 12. Despite previous wins over Sabalenka, this was Vondrousova's first career victory against a reigning number one. Currently ranked 164, the Czech has battled injuries since July 2024 and entered Berlin unseeded after missing three months this season with a shoulder injury. Vondrousova will play qualifier Wang Xinyu in Sunday's final, after the Chinese player beat Russian Liudmila Samsonova 6-4 6-1 in an hour and 15 minutes to reach the first final of her career. After securing the first break of the match, Wang built up a 5-2 lead before Samsonova hit back to narrow the gap. But Wang held firm, converting her fourth set point to break again and close out the set. Wang dominated the second set, breaking for 3-1 and saving two break points to hold for 4-1. She broke again for 5-1 on her fourth chance and calmly served out the match. The 23-year-old Wang, ranked 49th in the world, has enjoyed a breakout week in the German capital, beating second seed Coco Gauff in the round of 16. "This week has been a dream for me. I've been playing unbelievable tennis here. I don't know, it's something with Berlin I guess," Wang said. "Coming to every match here, I wasn't expecting anything, you know. For me, it was really just to enjoy the stage... We're always saying that (you should) celebrate before the final because if you lose that, you don't celebrate anything for this incredible week."
