Gautrain slashes ticket
In a move to make public transport more affordable and inclusive, the Gautrain has launched a new initiative called KlevaMova, offering 50% fare discounts to qualifying passengers and parking for just R1 a day at Gautrain stations.
The discount is available to individuals in households with a combined annual income of R350 000 or less, as well as students under 25, schoolchildren, pensioners, and recipients of the SASSA disability grant.
Announcing the initiative on Tuesday, Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said KlevaMova is part of broader efforts to ensure cost is not a barrier to accessing reliable and efficient public transport in Gauteng.
'KlevaMova forms part of government's efforts to make the Gautrain more accessible to a large share of the population in Gauteng, attract a diverse range of passengers across income groups, and ensure that cost is not a barrier,' said Diale-Tlabela.
The programme addresses a major concern highlighted by the Gauteng Household Travel Survey, which found that nearly 60% of households spend over 10% of their income on public transport, especially those living far from urban centres due to apartheid-era spatial planning.
The KlevaMova discount applies to Weekly, Monthly, and Return trip tickets for the Gautrain train service only. Interested commuters must apply and submit supporting documents for verification to qualify.

In addition to fare discounts, Gautrain has slashed parking fees to just R1 a day for all passengers who ride the train, valid from 1 April to 31 July 2025.
'Affordable and accessible public transport is crucial for reducing the cost of living and improving access to opportunities,' said Diale-Tlabela.
'The initiative also supports our 25-Year Integrated Transport Master Plan (ITMP25), which positions rail as the backbone of a modern, efficient, and low-carbon transport system.'
Gautrain hopes the initiative will ease commute-related stress, reduce road congestion, and promote greater economic inclusion and environmental sustainability across Gauteng.

City Power offers free electricity to these Johannesburg residents
City Power has urged low-income Johannesburg residents to sign up for its Free Basic Electricity (FBE) programme, which provides 50 kilowatts of electricity per month at no cost. The initiative forms part of efforts to reduce infrastructure damage and recover lost revenue caused by illegal electricity use. Spokesperson Isaac Mangena revealed that the free electricity programme aims to reconnect over 140 000 households who are not paying for electricity. 'Many of these customers are consuming electricity without paying, resulting in massive revenue losses for the utility and the increasing destruction of our infrastructure,' he said. Additionally, by targeting vulnerable groups and formalising their electricity use, the city hopes to clean up its billing system and improve compliance. City Power has also committed to replacing damaged or tampered meters without penalising qualifying residents. The free electricity programme is open to unemployed residents or those earning R7500 or less monthly. Applicants must also be South African citizens or permanent residents, legally occupy the property, and provide the necessary supporting documentation. 'The criteria also include being a South African citizen or permanent resident and being the legal occupants of the property in question,' Mangena explained. 'Supporting documentation such as a valid ID, proof of residence, COJ rates and taxes account, and income verification, such as a SASSA card or affidavit, will be required at registration.' The free electricity initiative is designed to support senior citizens, women and children, persons with disabilities, the unemployed, and child-headed households. City Power said that the programme reinforces the principle of electricity as a fundamental human right. 'The FBE programme is designed to cushion the most vulnerable and ensure access to electricity as a basic human right, while also helping to clean up the billing and compliance environment,' Mangena stated. What makes Pennington so special? According to the locals, it's because a lot of love and care has been shown to this hidden gem. The town certainly has a lot to offer. Firstly, the beach is special because of it's all-year-round weather. Everyone loves taking pictures on the deck – and great news – a picture frame will be installed on the deck soon. Dogs are welcome and many people meet on the beach with their pets, so both humans and dogs can socialise. It must be noted that dogs are not allowed on the Blue Flag beach, between the tidal pool and lifeguard tower. And yes, that's right. Pennington has Blue Flag status. Water quality is measured in two microbial indicators to test the faecal contamination in Blue Flag bathing waters and environmental management includes cleanliness of the beach, ablution facilities, accessibility to disabled persons, and no contamination in bathing water. There is also environmental education that entails awareness programmes which can be conducted in different target groups, ranging from school children to adults, and can be anything pertaining to coastal care and environmental management. The beach has lifeguards on duty (365 days a year) with suitable equipment. The area also has suitable parking spaces and controlled traffic, and prohibited use of alcohol to ensure safety for all beachgoers. Tidy Towns Pennington has also just put up boards that show the swimming conditions, tides, etc. The Tidy Towns group has helped put a sparkle in Pennington too. Over time, they upgraded the lifesavers' tower making sure they are protected from wind, rain and sun; planted gardens to welcome all to the area; carried out a car park project worth over R350 000; Village Green is always great to walk through with its gardens and they have placed benches for workers and the public. Many residents collect litter off the beach on a regular basis, and Tidy Towns has provided recycling bins. Car guards have also been kitted out by Tidy Towns in matching orange vests and hats to distinguish them and make them 'official' although they are all volunteers and depend on tips. Pennington ensures that nature is put first, with wildlife corridors kept 'wild' for the safe passage of bushbuck, duikers and mongoose. Local resident, Allan McLennan, does a Bird Walk every week, often in the Nkomba Bird Sanctuary or Umdoni Park. Contact him on 072 2459605. At Umdoni Park, you will find many different walking, running and cycling trails through the forest. There are viewing decks looking down the gorge where one can spot the Cape otters in the river, many benches, and also a picnic table in the Enchanted Forest as well as a Bird Hide. There is Jeff's Wild Trail for the more adventurous, named after Jeff Sandwith, a local resident who helped to design some of the trails, as well as identifying and labelling many of the indigenous trees in the forest. There is a beautiful waterfall along one of the trails too. On Thursday evenings, people can join the Thirsty Thursday running group, who run/walk 3km, 5km, 8km or 12km though the forest – with headlamps. These are just a handful of the experiences Pennington has to offer. The friendly residents invite one and all to visit the area and explore what they have on offer and make memories to last a lifetime. How the Correctional Services plans to allocate R1. 2 billion for prisoner food provision
The Department of Correctional Services has placed the provision of food for prisoners as one of the top four cost drivers of its budget after compensation of employees, property payments, and public-private partnership support. Responding to parliamentary questions from EFF MP Betty Diale, Groenewald said the department spent R1.4 billion on the provision of food on prisoners in 2023/24 financial year. The amount had increased to R1.5 billion in the last financial year that ended in March 2025. The document puts the provision for food to the tune of R952,975. Groenewald also said the department planned to maximise the utilisation of the services of the prisoners to produce food for themselves, to enable the department to redirect funds to other essential programmes. He said the prisoners will participate in the production workshops in agriculture to maximise their skills utilisation for bread and agricultural production for their ration. 'The self-sufficiency and sustainability programme in the department is centred around offender development, through the provision of work opportunities to offenders in bakeries and agriculture. Expansion of bakeries and agricultural projects towards an increase in offender skills utilisation for food production,' he said. The department's strategic plan document states that the department wants to become self-sustainable through activities such as those in production workshops, bakeries, agriculture, skills development, formal education and training, as well as through arts and culture. 'The department will expand marketing of production workshops' products and services to other client departments to improve revenue generation.' Meanwhile, Groenewald revealed that the cost per capita per inmate incarcerated for the 2025/26 financial year is R462.13 per day. Asked how his department managed financial implications for imprisonment of foreign nationals, he said there were 13,181 sentenced foreign nationals in prisons as at May 4 this year. 'The total cost to accommodate 13,181 sentenced foreign nationals on 4 May 2025 was R6,091,335.53 per day.' He stated that foreign national prisoners were not a separate category of inmates. Groenewald added that there were currently no bilateral agreements with neighbouring countries to transfer sentenced foreign national prisoners to serve in their countries of origin. 'The DCS is in consultation with the South African Police Service, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, and Department of International Relations and Cooperation to formalise a South African procedure to inter-state transfer of offenders.'
