Third ‘Tan Sri' tied to MBI scheme

The Star24-04-2025

GEORGE TOWN: With two prominent businessmen already in custody, police are now focusing on a third 'Tan Sri' as investigations into the Mobility Beyond Imagination (MBI) money laundering scheme deepen.
The latest businessman, said to be in his 50s, is expected to be called in for questioning upon his return to Malaysia. He is the executive chairman of a property group credited with transforming the state's real estate landscape.
On Monday, police arrested a 62-year-old 'Tan Sri' at his George Town residence. During the raid, officers also seized a white Rolls-Royce Ghost and a Ford Ranger Raptor. This same businessman had previously been detained for questioning last month but was released on the same day.
The Penang-based businessman, who owns a yacht docked at Straits Quay Yacht Club, is the managing director of a company with multi-billion housing and road projects in Penang, Perak and Kedah.
A few years ago, his company had shown interest in developing the Kulim International Airport (KXP), but the deal was terminated after it failed to comply with the agreement.
Another 'Tan Sri' businessman based in Kuala Lumpur was also nabbed for acting as a proxy for scammers.
The 60-year-old man, who is the chairman of an oil and gas company, was arrested last month.
The Inspector General of Police secretariat's anti-money laundering division head Comm Datuk Muhammad Hasbullah Ali had said in Tuesday's press conference that this 'Tan Sri' was not directly involved in the syndicate, but had duped a suspect into paying money to avoid arrest.
'The deal was originally for RM25mil and the suspect paid RM10mil as deposit.
'When he was arrested, the suspect told police that he had paid the money,' he said, adding that the suspect then made a police report.
'We arrested this 'Tan Sri' and the money paid was recovered.'
On Tuesday, Comm Muhammad Hasbullah added that five suspects had been nabbed from April 18 to April 21 during the second round of Ops Northern Star.
Among the assets seized included durian plantations in Pahang, Penang and Kedah worth RM223,624,167.75.
'A total of 299 bank accounts worth RM123,614,594.35 were also frozen,' he said during the press conference.
He added that police have been investigating the MBI case for over seven years. Based on an Interpol Red Notice, there are around 11 million victims from neighbouring countries.
Among the five recently arrested is a Penang-based 'Datuk Seri,' believed to be an architect involved in an abandoned RM10bil development project. He is a well-known figure in the state.
In the first phase of the operation last month, police detained two Penang-based lawyers, both holding 'Datuk' titles. Authorities seized several documents related to stock transactions and real estate deals.
A well-known 'Datuk Seri' property tycoon and his wife were also nabbed in Kedah during that time.
Last August, MBI founder Tedy Teow was deported from Thailand to China to assist the Chinese government's investigation in his role in the pyramid scheme.
It was reported that some two million Chinese nationals had been duped by Teow involving a sum of 500 billion yuan (RM300bil).
During its peak, MBI was said to have collected several billions from investors. But when the pyramid scheme collapsed in 2018 after a raid by Bank Negara, depositors were left with nearly no chance of recouping their losses.
It is believed that the recent police action to haul up several prominent businessmen was based on the exchange of intelligence between Bukit Aman and its Chinese counterpart following Teow's interrogation.

After migrant protest, Human Resources Ministry warns of licence revocation for non-compliant worker hostels

BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 22 — The Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA) will not hesitate to revoke the operating licences of Centralised Labour Quarters (CLQ) and Temporary Labour Quarters (TLQ) if operators fail to comply with the provisions under the Employees' Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446). Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said the warning followed a commotion involving a group of foreign workers at a TLQ operating in a hotel here on Friday, which caused unease among local residents. He said Act 446 stipulated the provision of suitable housing and basic amenities for foreign workers, but that employers must also prioritise workers' welfare, safety, and discipline to avoid negative impacts on the surrounding community. 'CLQs and TLQs are meant to centralise the accommodation of foreign workers so that it doesn't affect local neighbourhoods. So it's very important to have this system. I have discussed this matter with the operators of such facilities. 'I've also issued a reminder to ensure that workers' welfare is safeguarded and that their presence does not disturb the community. If they fail, I will not hesitate to instruct the Labour Department (JTK) and local authorities (PBT) to revoke their licences,' he said at a press conference here today. Also present were Penang Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye and Penang Labour Department deputy director A. Thanavalli. Sim said the foreign worker permits of the companies involved could also be cancelled, stressing that such actions were not meant to be punitive against industries or employers, but to ensure they understood the consequences of failing to manage their workers responsibly. He added that the hotel in Bukit Mertajam had been approved by the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) to operate as a TLQ until 2027, and had also obtained certification from the Labour Department. A total of 1,113 migrant workers were housed at the TLQ — comprising 946 from Bangladesh, 129 from Nepal and 38 from Myanmar. Sim said the incident last Friday night occurred when a group of migrant workers gathered outside the premises to protest against a TLQ supervisor who had allegedly collected money from them for certain purposes without the company's knowledge. He said the case was being investigated by the police, and JTK was also conducting checks to ensure compliance with Act 446. Earlier, the media reported that police arrested 46 foreign men following the disturbance outside the hotel used as a workers' hostel. — Bernama

Malaysia–US tariff talks making good progress

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's discussions with the United States (US) Trade Representative and the US Secretary of Commerce on ongoing tariff-related negotiations have made good progress, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz He said both Malaysia and US representatives have expressed their intention to finalise negotiations before the expiry of the 90-day pause on tariff implementation, and agreed to intensify efforts to reach an agreement acceptable to key stakeholders in both countries. In a statement today, he highlighted that the US has been one of Malaysia's top three export markets over the past decade. 'In May 2025, exports to the US recorded the eighth consecutive month of double-digit growth,' he said. A significant share of Malaysia's exports to the US supports and complements US domestic industries in sectors such as electrical and electronics (E&E), semiconductors, medical devices, machinery, equipment, and parts. Malaysia also serves as a key supplier of intermediate goods to US-based manufacturing industries. 'MITI has remained steadfast in upholding Malaysia's interests in all trade and investment relations, particularly in safeguarding the integrity of Malaysia's domestic commitments and sovereign rights,' he added. He further stated that MITI anticipates the negotiations will help secure Malaysia's supply chains and deliver positive spillovers to local businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), while also creating more high-paying jobs for Malaysians. 'These efforts will further strengthen Malaysia's position as a preferred investment destination in the region and drive the MADANI economic transformation agenda towards becoming a high-tech, high-income nation,' said Tengku Zafrul. Tengku Zafrul led a working visit to Washington, US, from June 18-20, 2025. The visit focused on continuing US tariff-related engagement and negotiations with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. He was accompanied by MITI's chief negotiator, the Deputy Chief of Mission from the Embassy of Malaysia, and MITI officials based in Washington.
