Dapur HEP, UiTM Penang's Community Kitchen Eases Financial Burden On Students

BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 22 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Penang campus has introduced a community kitchen initiative, dubbed Dapur Hal Ehwal Pelajar (Dapur HEP), to ease the financial burden on students, making it the first UiTM campus in Peninsular Malaysia to open the kitchen following its implementation at UiTM Sabah in 2023.
Dapur HEP was the brainchild of Prof Dr Mohd Sazili Shahibi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs (HEP), who conceived it during a meeting with deputy rectors of Student Affairs across all UiTM campuses. It was introduced at the Penang campus on June 4, 2023, under the leadership of the then Deputy Rector of Student Affairs, Associate Professor Dr Basharudin Abdul Hadi.
Penang UiTM's Student Residential and Hospitality staff Dewi Anis Othman said the initiative began with only four rice cookers and 20 kg of rice donated by a private contributor. Since then, the kitchen has expanded and is now equipped with two sets of stoves, essential items, and canned food, allowing students to prepare their meals.
She said the kitchen operates from the second-floor pantry of the residential college for male students (Intan) and female students (Nilam).
"The kitchen is open daily from 7 am to 11 pm with daily monitoring by the College Representative Committee to ensure cleanliness and maintain inventory," she told Bernama recently.
She said that although the kitchen targets students from the B40 group, it is open to all students as the university understands the financial struggles that many of them face, having to tighten their belts to make it through their studies.
Dewi Anis said the initiative has so far benefited 50 per cent of the 5,500 students from seven residential colleges on campus, adding that it won the Gold Category Special Award for Best Dapur HEP at the 2024 UiTM Excellence Awards for National Student Residencies in January.
She said the programme also received attention from ASEAN member countries, such as Indonesia and Thailand, whose representatives visited the campus to study the approach that UiTM Penang adopted, intending to implement a similar model at their universities.

Bakti MADANI Initiative By UniMAP Supports National Talent Development

KANGAR, June 22 (Bernama) -- The Bakti MADANI programme organised by Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) supports the Ministry of Higher Education's (MoHE) efforts to develop top national talent, while also shaping students who are capable of creating opportunities and contributing meaningfully to community development. UniMAP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaliman Sauli said the initiative is guided by six Community Development Pillars (S4S), aimed at producing not only knowledgeable graduates but also those with a strong sense of social responsibility. 'This initiative aligns with the UniMAP for Society mission, which focuses on producing graduates who are not just job seekers but contributors to society,' he said during the closing ceremony of the three-day, two-night programme in Kampung Gunung Medan here today. Zaliman added that UniMAP for Society is committed to preparing students to be agents of change, equipped with knowledge and skills that benefit the wider community. Speaking to reporters after the event, he shared that students, in collaboration with UniMAP lecturers, installed five solar-powered streetlights in Kampung Gunung Medan and Kampung Binjal. 'This project was an innovation by students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Technology, carried out in synergy with other departments. It strengthens ties between the university and the community through technology developed within the campus,' he said. Fifty students were also placed with 25 foster families in both villages and participated in activities such as communal cooking, motorcycle servicing, and providing health and wellness advice. 'The programme, held in close cooperation with the Perlis Native Welfare Organisation, successfully gave villagers direct exposure to UniMAP's academic expertise and offerings. 'It also helped raise awareness of the university's role and opened up opportunities for local youth to pursue higher education at UniMAP,' he added.

Terengganu Plans New Enactment To Address Livestock Roaming Issue

KUALA BERANG, June 22 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu government plans to introduce a new enactment requiring livestock owners to tag their animals with quick response (QR) codes. State Agriculture, Agro-Based Industry, Food Security and Commodities Committee chairman Datuk Dr Azman Ibrahim said the move was aimed at addressing the issue of roaming livestock, which posed safety risks to road users and caused damage to public infrastructure. He said the QR codes would enable the authorities to quickly identify the owners and take legal action as a deterrent. 'We are taking a serious look at the need for a Ruminant Livestock Control Enactment to regulate livestock activities. 'Currently, we only have local authority (PBT) by-laws which allow livestock to be captured and auctioned, but that's all. We need strict laws to deal with a problem that has been going on for decades,' he said at the Fish Fry Release Programme and the Presentation of Aquaculture Input Incentives in Kampung Temir here today. Meanwhile, Dr Azman said that approximately 346,000 fish and shrimp fry, including freshwater species such as baung, lampam, and kelah, would be released into Terengganu waters this year using allocations from the state government. In addition, he said a total of 596,000 fish fry were released into Sungai Kemaman, Sungai Ibai and Tasik Kenyir from January to June 15, using funds provided by the federal government. 'To boost fishery resources, the state government will begin placing 94 artificial reefs in Terengganu waters starting tomorrow in Pulau Redang. 'The programme introduced several years ago is starting to show positive outcomes, as fish landings continue to increase each year,' he said.
